- In the first episode of the second series of Defence in Depth, Dominic Nicholls, The Telegraph’s Associate Editor, speaks to Lieutenant General Kyrylo Budanov, Ukraine’s head of military intelligence.
In an exclusive interview, Gen Budanov says Western nations are providing “priceless” intelligence support locating the launch sites of Russian missiles being fired at Ukraine.
The spymaster, whose office complex works in semi-darkness as all the windows are barricaded with sandbags and has a canary in a cage to warn of possible Russian gas attack, also says “special agencies from western countries” are helping track down Russian spies searching for the weapons supplied by Nato and other countries.
Asked about partisan attacks inside Russia, Gen Budanov, who has survived 10 known assassination attempts, said: “It’s clear that during the war, intelligence is responsible not only for gathering data, but also conducting special operations.

Defence in what?
The fine art of trying to get information from a source that, by design, needs to hide information. Great content. Thanks from SW Canada.
The hunting owl is a brilliant logo for their operation. The owl flies silently and maneuvers swiftly to strike on wing or to drop soundlessly on target. They are the quietest pursuit predators and they do like to take bats on wing, tracking them by their sonar emission. I admire the Ukrainian humor and spirit.
Peregrine falcon is the fastest bird. Pigeons are fastest in a straight line. But owl's are cool, I suppose 😅

The ability to acknowledge ones own mistakes is a rather distinctive and highly valued quality of a leader. Clearly moved on from The Soviet.... and a humble man too.
Yeah, he´s 38, he was only 5 when the USSR collapsed. Huge difference from the Kremlin, all those guys are ancient relics of that empire.
Good saying but Zelensky is doing quite the opposite of that, blaming Western aid for his mistakes.

I think he meant Patriot batteries, not HIMARS.
And Budanov answered the Himars question as deserved, as the journalist did not distinguish a Patriot from a Himar or a maritime drone.
Yes. And the Ukrainian forces "across the Dnipro river, in Zaporizhzhia", he meant acroos the river "in Kherson". It's Kherson on both sides of the river there. Zaporizhzhia is much further East.
The "HIMAR hit ships" 'mistake' was purposeful. A trick to get the General to correct it in a way that revealed more than it should. A great journalistic trap, but one that fortunately didn't work in this instance.

As impressive as Budanov is, he is an odd duck! His unblinking stare, the directness of his answers - very unusual. But by Jove, he does an amazing job!
He hasn´t slept properly for 10 years. Also, not unusual in some post-Communist and some Nordic countries.
