  • This is one of a series of the lesser known watch movements seen stripped and serviced on yourtube, looking around there are many for high end and numerous Seiko services but few or none of a handful of watches that are well deserving of an internal look.
I hope to feature HMT hand winding and automatic, (which are license built Miyota clones), Allwyn, which are annother Indian but license built Seiko clones, Orient, and Citizen soon.
The complete, strip, service and reassembly of the Ricoh automatic watch movement. I've seen and heard this referred to frequently as both the R31 and R61 yet have never seen any evidence of a specific calibre number and to my knowledge, this is the only Automatic movement that Ricoh used.
However, they're a nice movement, the only real difficulty is the minimal clearance for the balance wheel meaning pivots have to be just right and the automatic bridge which can test your patience during reassembly to prevent the hand winding from locking up once fitted.
A search around can yield some wild and wacky dial and case types.

I have a beautiful old Ricoh day/date from a eBay seller years ago. It was supposed to have been serviced and running but it wasn't running when it arrived. Ive held onto it in hopes of getting it going one day. tempted to look at it after watching your video.

Go for it. Be careful with the dial as dial finishes can be fragile on them.
Dial side is busy but as long as you're methodical it's not too hard. The automatic bridge is probably the trickiest part to reassemble.

Thanks so much for posting this video. It has helped me restore a Ricoh 61 with a beautiful orange gradient dial from the 70s. It's a great watch and I love the auto winding mechanism.

Good luck with it. Looks like a good clean movement and hopefully no surprises.

Thank you for sharing this video. I think you forgot the tiny twin wheel connected to the auto winding works.

Hope you found it useful. It's possible I didn't include it in the editing? It was so long since I filmed this I'd have to look through it again.

@@spidiq8you are not gonna believe but I am still using your video as a guide when I service my Ricoh watches. Sincerely, thank you so much. Have a wonderful day ahead.

May I ask what the lift angle is on this movement?

Excellent video, do you know which hands of any modern movement is compatible with the R61?

      Thanks.
Offhand I don't, you'd need to measure the hour wheel, cannon pinion and 4th wheel pinion to find the hand sizes ideally with a micrometer.

thanks for this. i have a bunch of ricohs (and also a bunch of HMTs. fwiw i believe the auto rajats etc were real miyotas not clones). i got them on ebay from india a few years back when they were much easier to come by. i love the fact they all have the same r31 movement, aside from some quartz ones and iirc a brief partnership in the early 60s ... so when i learn to service one i can do all of them

      Glad to help.
I plan to do a service on HMT manual and auto when I get the chance to film them and am just completing a Vostok service.

@@samirhairlover2673 It's very hard to say without seeing the watch as a non running watch can be due to many things.
It could be as simple as it needing a clean and service or there could be a fault with it.

samir the ones that aren't r31 are probably too rare to worry about. the 909 seems to be typical: automatic day/date. sometimes people call the movement a 21, by confusion with the 21 jewels, and the ricoh logo R being an upside-down 21. spidiq will know better than me if there's a problem swapping movements between models, but a careful amateur can swap another used movement much more cheaply than getting a professional repair. the skill is very much less than dismantling the movement. [skills: remove case back, remove winding stem, remove hands, release dial feet.] you might need to put the old stem in the new movement. if it's any help, i bought several ricohs for minimum price on ebay and most of them ran very well.
