I think it depends on what you are going to do with it. If you plan to sell it as an antique then maybe leave it rusted. But you definitely had an idea to gift it to your girlfriend and painting it gives it more value to her as intended. Money isn’t always the most important thing in life. You took something that probably would be buried in a landfill and gave it a renewed life. Love the coloring.

Great video 👍 That Poor Man’s flea market is Gold ! That chair made in Korea 🇰🇷 looked pretty cool and it didn’t look like it was used a lot , great find!👍Some of those wooden dollhouses with furniture 🪑 go for a pretty good amount money , that one look like it was in pretty good shape. I think the best find was that French 🇫🇷cast iron 🪴 planter. You did a fantastic job restoring that vintage old planter. I think cast iron Garden ornaments, statues, and planters were meant to be painted and repainted so you would have many years to enjoy it in your garden or yard. That color selection you chose was pretty cool, it came out beautifully. You took that one over the top 👍. When I first seen the picture of the raccoon 🦝 on the porch I thought it was a cat 🐈‍⬛ lying there 😂😂. It looks like your cat 🐈‍⬛ doesn’t mind being around the raccoon 🦝. Beautiful shot of Old Glory 🇺🇸 in the breeze. I hope you have a great time at Jacktown. Well again great video and can’t wait to see what you do on Monday. Have a great weekend. 😃👍👍

For me, I get great deals because of patina! I do the antique horns! The blacker the better I like them! That means silver or silver plated and they clean up beautifully! The patina actually protects the metal. As for cast iron! Treat the rust, fix the rust with the acid and paint it anyway you want! Like you said, paint comes off if somebody wants the patinated look back! Fantastic video! Have a great weekend!

Some people go nuts over things being left as-is. The way I see it, you painted a piece of garbage and made it look nice. If you dare leave it outside, eventually the paint you put on there will wear off naturally. To each his own. Ignore the snobs who always have to be right.

The planter looks terrific. I am glad you rescued this from the scrap heap.
I wonder if the folks who leave them rusty feel the patina is needed for resale.
Your girlfriend will be using this so a good idea to protect it with paint, and if painting, then go with what looks good to you and the girlfriend.
I am often amazed at the crazy prices things go for once they are deemed "collectable".
Good to see you at Jacktown today. The sun finally came out as I drove home.

John, I believe that that planter is very old and very high-quality. If it was mine, I would do my best to mitigate the rust, and then paint it a gloss black. After that, I would definitely color it and make it beautiful. Great find!

John, Beetles are o.k. But if it was a spider nope I'm out. I don't like them.. That was a great poor man's flea market find. I would have painted it. I have a cast iron garden hose hanger. Done in black/gold. I like what you did with the planter . The best part of restoring is the joy it brings no matter what your tastes are. Have fun at Jack Town. Remember you quit buying tools. 🤣🤣

my view on it is that rust is a destroyer, and no matter how pretty it is, it must be eleminated. If you want something to last generations, it needs to be taken care of. I think items like that planter were designed to show detail (as most things, even tools used to) and paint is a great way to show it and protect it while not altering the piece itself.

You have to do what makes you happy my friend. I restore Matchbox cars from the original cars and it drives people nuts. I do them with as many original parts as possible along with paint colors that match the originals. I might be harming their value by doing this but there are people that will still be interested if I decide to sell any at some point.

Another clue to the age of wooden items is the wood grain: especially hardwoods. Oak with quarter grain patterns is generally quite old because it’s old-growth and to get that pattern, the sawmill has to cut it in a particular manner to bring out the grain, but these days they are more concerned with getting the most boards from a tree rather than the grain pattern. Pretty much anything walnut is old too!

I can't never let something rusted or with a heavy patina as it is, no matter the age.
If I'm buying it for myself, and not to make a profit out of it.
Usually 98% of the time I'm not interested in reselling, aspecially what makes me happy.
I bought a German wagon wrench that has 85 to 100 years, at first I said to myself I will just repair the handle and let it the way it is.
    Yes of course I did ! 😅
At the end it has the old look with small dings, (it was hard for me to restrain not sanding it all) but other then that now it's a functional tool that shows it's age with grace.
And it's pleasant to the touch and the eye's. But this is a exception I usually like to make them look like new, and to modify them a little to look even better then when they were new. That is why I like your channel (among other's of course, John Fix comes in mind) because 87% of the time we have the same taste in restoring.
Not to mențion the awesome knowledge you share with us, and the stories. 🙂👍

I think it looks good painted! I have worked with cast iron parts for years and once they rust it will appear again unless there is some kind of barrier rather it is a clear coat or paint. As you said paint can be removed and since it is going to be used the paint is a great idea. Thanks for sharing this.

I know a guy in the UK who goes to France all the time and brings back tons of old stuff.. with lots of patina, and is displayed with the patina.. In fact my wife and I like patina in small amounts contrasting against clean and sharp background.. but I must say your paintwork is much better than patina . . love it, great job 👏 I see it full of nuts and fruit at Christmas 👍🎄. I really like that planter with the rust and would have been tempted to seal it and keep the rusty patina, but also liked what you did with it. Great job.
A few years ago I helped an antique dealer collecting some big concrete planters from a stately home and offered to brush off the moss and dirt. He nearly had a ceasure as that would have more than halved their value.

I think the planter came out fine. On the gulf coast here in the USA there are beetles that actually eat the oil that leaks from underground (naturally). I kept hitting them on my windshield and wiper fluid ain't getting that off! They told me what they were and I didn't believe them until someone left the lid off of a tub of wheel bearing grease. In just a few hours you could no longer see the grease for all of the beetles crawling on it!

Oil is the second most plentiful fluid on this planet. God gave it to us for a reason. Since I was a little boy that understood that I always wondered what would happen if we burned up everything that could have saved us as a species. I came to the realization that God's plan may not include us. We can "save the planet" by our feeble attempts to change it. We are doing more damage going electric. Refining oil is pretty easy and green. It occurs naturally from the primodial ooze that blanketed this planet for billions of years. He put it here.

Great video ScoutCrafter. Not only did I like your choice of colors for that planter, I really liked that beetle. I’ve seen a bug around a few times and I can’t find any info on it anywhere. When the bugs are small they kind of look like a fat mosquito. But here’s the interesting part, they have almost a wagging tail and when they are full grown they are over an inch long, still fly, and have square growths where their knees would be. I couldn’t find what they’re called but did find someone that said they are beneficial because they eat spiders. Weird huh?

Looks very Christmasy. I like the choice of colors. At this point I would have put a dark brown wash over it and wipe 99.9% off the item. That enhances the texture and depth of the casting. And if you don’t like it……there’s always paint stripper. 😂
I bet you’ve never painted something after exhaustive prep and then….stripped it all off because it didn’t look like you thought it would.

Great work on the French cast iron planter, ScoutCrafter! 👍🏻 If I were going to sell it I would have kept it original to run the price up for the “Patina Boys!” 😂 If I were keeping it I think I would have done something conservative like a white wash or blackening just to keep it from rusting, but that’s just my personal preference. Well, that was an interesting find John, and I'm sure you've opened a can of worms asking for opinions on paint finishes ! The way you've decorated it, it almost looks like it's for Christmas with the wreaths on it perhaps planted up with a Poinsettia or two !
Personally I quite like the look after the prep & etch, the dark grey with white weathering is reminiscent of lead planters, I guess you could paint it grey and dry brush some white for a similar effect. It's good not always to consider monetary value in these matters, but in as must as value is often linked to rarity I would want to be aware so as not to ruin something that is rare and old.

Green Japanese beetles were always around our pear tree when fruiting.
We would tie a 5'-6' long string to their center leg and they'd fly circles around us... when they got tired, we'd let them go and get a new one.
We also made little airplanes out of butterfly wings and match sticks, stick a fly in the nose and let them buzz around the Livingroom. We tries super glue, but double sided tape worked better. You could "refuel" them with some sugar water.

Yes they had white wash and I think green. I still live on the block I grew up on and old Mrs. Hornung had those on her window sill but unfortunately when I asked her daughter about them two years ago after she died they threw them all out. Mrs. Hornung was a wonderful women and she was the daughter in law of the famous Jacob Hornung Brewing Company of Philadelphia and had a original Hornung Brewing clock in the basement.

Paint, not paint. To me, it doesn't matter. It's your decision to make and the the decision should make you happy.

I would have sold it although I think a solid color actually shows off the detail very nicely.🇺🇸

I would not have painted it like that 😮, 😂😂🤣, but seriously each to his own , and can always be changed , story time , I’m 56 years old and I only ever got stung once in my life , I was walking one day and like you I had something stuck to my sock , and thought like you , a seed head or something , and brushed it off without really looking , and it stung me ! Was a bumble bee , and you know what happens when they stung , boy did I feel guilty , ever since then I look after any insect I find , guess it mentally scarred me for life !

I’d paint it, probably a solid color. Beautiful job though. Must have taken quite a bit of time.

I'd have given it the "anti rust" treatment, and then just given it a couple of coats of antique bronze all over,,
,,, but what do I know,, I'm a fully fledged "patina boy"... Ha ha ha.

I don’t particularly like your choice of colors. To me, it now looks like it should be used only during the Christmas holidays. Antiquing the finish would allow you to use it year round and avoid the bolder color scheme you used. But, to each his own! I do appreciate knowing the process needed to preserve it.

John, I'm still waiting for you to do something with the Electro-Mechanico drill press that someone gave to you. I have one that I got from ebay. I've been trying to find out as much as I can about it. I thought that maybe, your video might be helpful to me.
