  • Flamingos are a species of bird that can be found in various parts of the world. In Africa, they are commonly found in Tanzania, particularly in the soda lakes. Lake Natron, in particular, is a significant breeding ground for flamingos. During the breeding season, most of the flamingos migrate to Lake Natron to mate, nest, hatch, and breed.
Lake Natron provides an optimal breeding environment for Lesser flamingos due to two key factors.
Firstly, the high salinity of the water creates a natural barrier that effectively deters predators such as large cats and birds from accessing their eggs and chicks.
Secondly, the lake is rich in cyanobacteria which provides ample sustenance for the birds throughout the breeding season.
The movement of flamingos from their breeding grounds is often due to environmental changes, such as alterations in weather and water conditions. When faced with the effects of climate change, flamingos tend to relocate to regions with more favorable conditions.
Ngorongoro Lakes such as Empakaai, Makat, Ndutu, Masek have residents' Flamingos that move within throughout the the year.
