While many are seeking happiness and a life of ease, virtue has seemingly fallen out of style. In this interview, Fr. Gregory Pine talks about the connection between meaning, happiness, and virtue. In doing so, we cover questions such as "how to be more confident" and "how to be more decisive" as well as more theoretical questions, such as the role prudence plays in aligning all the other virtues. Whether you're looking for practical advice on living a life of virtue or you want to know the importance of the overlooked virtue of prudence, this video is for you. And, of course, since this is Fr. Pine, we talk about everything from the gestation period of whales to Homer. So, yeah, there's something for everyone.

    About Gospel Simplicity:
Gospel Simplicity began as a TH-cam channel in a Moody Bible Institute dorm. It was born out of the central conviction that the gospel is really good news, and I wanted to share that with as many people as possible. The channel has grown and changed over time, but that central conviction has never changed. Today, we make content around biblical and theological topics, often interacting with people from across the Christian tradition with the hope of seeking greater unity and introducing people to the beautiful simplicity and transformative power of the gospel, the good news about Jesus.
    About the host:
Hey! My name is Austin, and I'm a 23 year old guy who’s passionate about the beautiful simplicity and transformative power of the gospel. I believe that the gospel, the good news about Jesus, is really good news, and I’m out to explore, unpack, and share that good news with as many people as possible. I'm a full blown Bible and Church History nerd that loves getting to dialogue with others about this, learning as much as I can, and then teaching whatever I can. I grew up around Frederick, MD where I eventually ended up working my first job at a church. They made the mistake of letting me try my hand at teaching, and instantly I fell in love. That set me on a path for further education, and I'm currently a student at Moody Bible Institute in Chicago, IL, studying theology. On any given day you can find me with my nose in a book or a guitar in my hands. Want to get to know me more? Follow me and say hi on Instagram at: @austin.suggs

I struggled a lot to truly understand the difference between “pure reason” and “practical reason” in Kant’s ethics and metaphysics (at the university). I came to understand those philosophical concepts fairly better only after studying - who would know back then? - moral theology, specially St Thomas Aquinas and St Alphonsus Liguori. If only I studied theology much earlier! Fr Pine is a very bright man.
_”Prudence is the virtue that disposes practical reason to discern our true good in every circumstance and to choose the right means of achieving it; "the prudent man looks where he is going" (Prov 14, 15). “Keep sane and sober for your prayers” (1 Pe 4, 7). Prudence is "right reason in action," writes St. Thomas Aquinas, following Aristotle. It is not to be confused with timidity or fear, nor with duplicity or dissimulation. It is called ‘auriga virtutum’ (the charioteer of the virtues); it guides the other virtues by setting rule and measure. It is prudence that immediately guides the judgment of conscience. The prudent man determines and directs his conduct in accordance with this judgment. With the help of this virtue we apply moral principles to particular cases without error and overcome doubts about the good to achieve and the evil to avoid”_ (Catechism, par. 1806).
Nice topic to go deep into studying, Austin! And congratulations for the 40k+ subscribers!

Thank you for bringing Fr. Pine back. I appreciate his intellect and I completely dig his sense of humor and all of his crazy references. I didn’t expect to get all jolly in a conversation about Prudence when I heard a reference to my Phoenix Suns and Chris Pine. lol It made me laugh, but that’s a pretty great illustration of how striving for virtue should be pervasive in every aspect of our life.

Hi Austin. 👋🙏🏽❤️ I really hope you are doing well, mentally, emotionally, and physically. This is not an insult but you look just a wee bit tired. Just a concern, so again, I hope you are doing well. And please don't feel like you owe us, as your subscribers and viewers, anything. It's okay to slow down on these videos. Take time for yourself and your studies. You're in my prayers, Austin. 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽❤️ God love and bless you. 🙏🏽❤️

    Catholics, let's restore
    virtues > emotions,
common sense > follow your heart, harmony > whim.
We especially have to aim for prudence as it is the stem of all another cardinal virtues.
Our Lord Jesus, Master and source of all virtue, increase our faith, hope and love.
