At first I was thinking - what about the inside? Then I realized - it never got wet, all the water was applied from the outside, evenly, so the inside rim developed almost uniformly by default. Smart technique

The thick layer might also be made with "hypertufa" (a kind of cob mixture that might include a local waste product such as sawdust, or even to make it from "foamcrete" that incorporates a waste product of Styrofoam and the Portland cement.) Such options would make it less expensive to make AND probably less heavy.
