Double the light sensitivity, more dynamic range in Sony's big new annoucement!
By seperating layers in their sensor, Sony is able to increase the light sensitivty by double, lower noise and increase dynamic range.

Man the menu is so bad. I would be stoked if they finally got around to improving it.
And Canon got both of them already. What Sony gonna do about the Canon eye focus it can only get better as Canon come out with new bodies
menu I love it... nikons I cant deal with... its a matter of what you are used to
I believe "twice the light" translates to one stop advantage?
Pretty common for video cameras...every 5 years or so old Betacams doubled their light sensitivity...was never a game changer.
Definitely sounds better on their news release than just one stop haha. But the dynamic range and noise reduction is very exciting.
The Starvis sensor is already way beyond any camera you own, and it has been out a couple years. But of course you are talking about full resolution sensors.
What camera is the starvis sensor in?
@@JessePeacock It is mostly sold to other companies making security cameras that can see by starlight, and dashboard cameras.

(Dell UltraSharp HDR 4K webcam uses Sony IMX858 starvis)
@izuix5629 but now this sensor is two years old. I haven't been watching, but probably something else is cutting edge now

Sony cameras already have the lowest noise sensors on the market, so there is no need to wait to jump ship.
If they could bring their dynamic range up from 15 (which is already so good) to something like 16 or 17, anyone not on Sony would seriously have to re-consider their choices.
Now I'm shooting (same dark studio) on my Sony at iso400-640 but my friend shoot at iso1600 on Canon R.
Now Sony is doubling it? Wow... but how much money?
Only gripe about Sony is its menu, worst ever takes hours to find something and a second to messup
I hope Sony see’s how many people aren’t a fan of their menus. But yeah, lots of uses of have more sensitivity and especially more dynamic range. Deff a good thing for the whole market

@@JessePeacock yeah most prosumer cameras are struggling with rolling shutter the s1h and the zcam s6 are the worst.
especially when we are talking about full frame.
Id imagine separating these two things would cause the sensor read out speed to be slower.

Now that we've seen the results in their new smartphone I have to say their math doesn't add up. In fact the difference is almost negligible which defacto shows: don't believe the marketing talk.
Xperias aren't computationally impressive, + you've been conditioned to expected heavily algorithm and AI altered jpegs from phones.
It's not fair in any way, shape or form. You're misleading yourself. To seriously test it, you need to go out with 2 phones using the same size sensors with the same pixel sizes (except one is the new stacked sensor) and snap RAWs with them. THEN compare.

No, I'm not talking computational photography here, I know enough about the topic to not make that mistake.
I'm saying that the raw low light performance, while very good - impressive for the size of the sensor, is NOT a gamechanger by any means.
The image can look great but sony still needs to learn to make a decent menu before I hop on this bandwagon.
Man their menu's are so rubbish. Blackmagic really have an advantage in that way.
The Canon R3 can already see in the dark i guess Canon beat sony to it lol
Haha. I can only imagine what another doubling of sensitivity would look like though. Maybe proper night vision but with beautiful colours 🤪
