I had a dream recently where my old schools somehow lost all my records and I had to go back to kindergarten. Showing them my bachelor's degree and pointing out I'm 24 years old made no difference. Then when I got to kindergarten, I forgot you can't wear tank tops so the school wanted to call my mom to bring me a change of clothes and wouldn't let me drive myself home even though I had driven myself there that morning and had my driver's license and keys. Dreams are so weird sometimes...
I'm about ten years older than you, Hank, and I can tell you my own experience with the school anxiety dream. When I got to be about 40, it changed. Instead of having a recurring dream where I missed all my classes for a whole semester and then waking up in a cold sweat, I started having a recurring dream where I missed all my classes for a whole semester, called up an old friend who happens to be a tenured professor, and asked her to fix the problem for me, and then I'd wake up feeling completely satisfied with myself. The day you start fixing your nightmares by pulling strings with well-connected friends is the day you know yourself, beyond any shadow of a doubt, to be middle-aged.
(My friend the professor, though, once told me she's plagued with a recurring dream where she's forgotten to _teach_ her classes for a whole semester and is scheduled to give her students a final exam today that she hasn't even started preparing yet.)
Yes Hank, students still pass notes in class. Last year in my history class, while we were reviewing for a final exam (totally not an important thing to pay attention too, am I right), three of my friends and I passed each other a piece of paper and wrote haikus on them. For a good 20 minutes we passed this loose leaf around and the haikus started to create this epic story. We never got caught by my teacher, I passed the final exam with a 96, and still have that sheet of paper hanging on my wall :)
It makes me so happy that passing notes is still a thing. My friends and I used to play three-way tic tac toe in history class, back in 2000. I think the teacher knew, but we were all A students so he didn't care.
I have one of those big gum things stuffed with sticky notes from 4th grade and another one in fifth in 6th it was basically just in music class I have an intern notebook full lol

I was dating this boy my freshman year of high school, and we would trade handwritten notes at least once per day. I kept all of those notes in the front pocket of my binder so that I could reread them. When he broke up with me and secretly started dating my best friend, I took all of those notes and mailed them back to him with a bunch of other stuff he had given me during the course of our 4 month relationship. Pretty dramatic stuff, looking back on it now, but it was some pretty awesome revenge-fantasy-fulfillment for 15-year-old me.
Also I love that there are background noises of Katherine watching Merlin. It's impossible to watch that show without making noises. Love it though and I think we can all agree that THE LAST EPISODE NEVER HAPPENED.
What last episode? I have no knowledge of there being a "last episode" of Merlin. We've just been on hiatus forever. Someday it'll come back and we'll get the ending we deserve.

In High School I invented a game called note wars. You start with a piece of paper and write something like "hi how are you?" and pass it to the person next to you, but instead of waiting for a reply you start another one and another one, until you have three or four concurrent note-conversations going and you have to reply as quickly as possible so you don't end up with a build-up of notes on your desk. Obviously there was no time in between for actual learning. As a result I am bad at geography...
What happens is the horrible stuff is still in your memory, but it's super faded under whatever new stress/pressure you have. And when you think about high school, instead of thinking about grades or bullies or overbearing parents, you think about how awesome it was to not pay bills/loans/rent and how you wish you were young again instead of old.
***** It's encouraging to know that even when you're weird in high school, you can become as awesome and successful as you (maybe it even helps if you're a little weird). Very nice of you to include us in your nostalgia trip, that's pretty personal stuff.
I recently had a house fire (my family is safe) and had to go through the same process of keeping and trashing shit. I highly recommend it as a weekend activity for anyone with the time.
We used to pass notes in the hallway and then we upgraded to a pimped out notebook and we'd each write something to someone during class. Ah memories. I graduated in 2006
***** Good question. My parents were old school and didn't get me a texting plan until I was 17. But I always thought it was more fun to try to make cool designs on my letters. It wasted more time during class than texting did!
***** No way! I did that in 2004/05! My friends and I created our own coded alphabet so teachers wouldn't have a clue what we were writing each other. Good times, good times. I have a feeling kids of today don't enjoy these fun times. Could be wrong though.

I'm in university and I still write notes to my friend. Only the one though, she's the only one special enough to have shared classes with me. That said, I'm 28 and she's 29 and we're both doing undergrads, so maybe we do it because we're still a part of that generation. We are also most often the only ones who hand-write our notes rather than using our laptops which, for whatever reason, we still insist on lugging to school. I haven't figured that one out yet. Also, I'm watching this in 2018 so HELLO FROM THE FUTURE!!!

PeeJayEemus 2 yrs later... we graft new branches onto trees to make them better all the time. that's what you are, a grafted branch, not some poor lonely leaf.
My Precalc class in senior year of high school had a deal where if you got A's (or sometimes high B's) on all your tests, your homework grade was nullified. Even though I'd never been good at math, I was pretty dang intuitive in that class, and so I spent all non-lecture time in that class drawing an "art war" with the guy sitting next to me. For the uninitiated, an "art war" really has nothing to do with art, but rather it starts with some stick-guy in a precarious situation (ours was hanging from a cliff by rope). One person draws a thing very close to destroying him, then the next person draws a thing near to destroying that thing, and on and on. It becomes this crazy situation where if time moved forward a second, all chaos would be unleashed. Also, you can trace back all the events since each is aimed at the last. We ended up with six notebook pages stapled together 3x2 and absolutely covered in the graphite of insanity. The teacher kept it and expressed desire to frame it, although he still had it in his desk when I visited two years later.
My friend Heidi and I would pass notes between all of our classes, carried by a little coin purse shaped like a puppy, and we'd add in poems when life was hard. When we went to college, we mailed the puppy back and forth. Not efficient, but still fantastic. I'd recommend it. :)
I was homeschooled until college, so I only had 4-5 years of this terror being real. I'm not sure how long it's been since I dreamt about "it's the end of the semester and oh no I forgot I was registered for this class--I haven't attended at all", but....yeah, pretty sure it was the past couple years. If not, the memory is pretty salient now that Hank has brought it back up. Age 34.

I wrote in a notebook with my best friend and we went through over 20 in the three years we went to school together. Sometime in the month before graduation we went through it all, laughed, cried, cringed, saved some songs and poems and drawings, and burnt everything else. It was beautiful.
HANK YOU MAKE ME FEEL UNACCOMPLISHED AS AN ARTIST!!! Like seriously, that art is stuff I would have to work at for a week to achieve!! And it's on stuff like homework which to me says you didn't work on it more than maybe a few hours and GAHHHH!! Also, despite having just graduated, I passed notes in class during high school. I recently found my Algebra 2 notebook from Freshman year and found notes between my friend Jon and me. They're from one or two days in the span of two weeks but we wrote many many more I recall.
Hank you're maybe about ten years older than I am, texting/facebook/tumblr came a little later for me, unlike the current young generation that has never lived without it. I did stuff like this A LOT! I doodled in class, I made wish lists (on paper), I wanted to be a fashion designer because i loved drawing creative dresses on the back of homework (that was also still on paper)! For some strange reason, I kept a lot of those doodles. For some reason, seeing that you kept those doodles too, makes me feel even more nostalgic about how I used to think.

Definitely passed notes in high school 2004-2008. We had a notebook in middle school that got swapped between classes but it got to be too conspicuous. I love that Katherine is watching Merlin, too.

I'm very impressed that Hank can vlog while in the midst of moving house. Moving gives me such an intense sense of "none of my stuff is where it's supposed to be!" that I cannot do my normal activities because I must finish moving first.
marshmello3455 I've had that dream at times when I wasn't in high school or college too. What's even weirder is that in real waking life, I don't think I ever truly got lost and couldn't find a class.
I've had dreams about not being able to find a classroom and winding up in a totally different class I hadn't signed up for, being late for a class, totally forgetting I had signed up for a class for a week or so and being behind later on, and, oddly enough, having a college class take a field trip to the middle school I went to. In that last one, the middle school is always abandoned, dark or dim, very dusty or mossy, and run-down.
I just recently graduated high school and yeah notes are still a thing. Not with everyone, but I did with with my friends a lot in APUSH. I mean, would you rather that piece of paper get taken away from you, or your expensive cell phone?

You made a little "mailbox" in your locker so you could talk to kids who didn't share your lunch period. It's one of those things whose novelty yields the kind of nostalgia that makes you not want to take things for granted.
Yes, Hank, I did give notes to people in high school. In fact, I still have a few from my friends, and they're interesting to look at because you can see the personality of the friend coming out in their style of handwriting, as well as the little embellishments around the margins and such. They were always folded into neat little self-contained envelope thingies, too.

My friends and I graduated from high school in the last five years, and yes, we did pass notes to each other! We kept a notebook of our ramblings and teacher quotes. They were fun mementos of each school years - from our letters to marching band to our chatterings about homecoming to a long list of cliffhangers at the end of The Hobbit.
It's interesting to me that I always feel melancholy moving out of a house-- even when the leaving is a good thing and the going-to place is wonderful..... I think the leaving itself is a concrete marker of the passage of time.

Ahhh, handwritten notes. A couple of my friends and I had journals that we kept together. We'd write notes back and forth in the journal and pass them to each other between classes. I need to go find that right now! Feeling totally nostalgic.

I've passed notes with my friend during class in high school through the past two years, it's a fun time. I never want to see the note-passing die. And this is so oddly emotional for me to watch, even though I was never there, through all the videos it has felt like I was there sitting next to Hank as he filmed these videos. I'm excited but also just nostalgic that he's not there anymore. On to the next chapter (2 years late). DFTBA :)
In elementary and middle school the cool thing was to write your friends' names in cool colors and cover the paper with inside jokes. We'd also write inside jokes and quotes all over each other's binders and folders. I have so many drawings from friends.
Does it depress you more to read a paper (that was written when you were a senior in High School) that listed everything you were going TO ACTUALLY DO before you turned 30 or 40 and then realize that you did NONE OF IT? I am so depressed. What happened to me!?! Adulthood kills man! (deep sobs) I need a bag of cheesy puffs right now!
My friends and I actually have this notebook that we pass between the three of us and when it feels up we take turns purchasing a new notebook and we each keep one notebook, at the end of the year! I graduated high school in '09 and we DEFINITELY had fancy-pantsy artistic notes we passed around with our friends. I, like you, have kept them. I'm not in graduate school and we still pass notes to each other and pass doodles to each other when we zone out during a 3 hour lecture. Haha! Good luck with the move!
hmm.. I wouldn't say that's technophobic though, more like "please respect your teacher and classmates (and value your education) by not staring at your phone in class" or evn just "know when it is appropriate and inappropriate to use your phone". When I was in high school a mere 6 years ago, they would confiscate your phone for a week if you're caught bringing it out anywhere within the school premises at any time of the day (except for emergencies)

Florence Blue that's how they do it in my school either. There's a wooden shelf by the door in class and you have to put your phone in when you enter and you're only allowed to take it when you leave. People who are found with their phones, no matter if they're actually even using it or not, have it confiscated and only their parent can go retrieve it. And i'm in the last year of high school.
The school board tried to make my school do that, but the teachers thought it was stupid so it only lasted a few weeks while the board's spies were around.

You will. As you get older, the bad parts of things usually drift from your memory if you allow them.

I'm still in highschool and people write notes all the time. Especially long notes in multi-colored pen. People text too, but it isn't the only thing.

That said, I'm 28 and she's 29 and we're both doing undergrads, so maybe we do it because we're still a part of that generation. We are also most often the only ones who hand-write our notes rather than using our laptops which, for whatever reason, we still insist on lugging to school. I haven't figured that one out yet. Also, I'm watching this in 2018 so HELLO FROM THE FUTURE!!!

PeeJayEemus 2 yrs later... we graft new branches onto trees to make them better all the time. that's what you are, a grafted branch, not some poor lonely leaf.
My Precalc class in senior year of high school had a deal where if you got A's (or sometimes high B's) on all your tests, your homework grade was nullified. Even though I'd never been good at math, I was pretty dang intuitive in that class, and so I spent all non-lecture time in that class drawing an "art war" with the guy sitting next to me. For the uninitiated, an "art war" really has nothing to do with art, but rather it starts with some stick-guy in a precarious situation (ours was hanging from a cliff by rope). One person draws a thing very close to destroying him, then the next person draws a thing near to destroying that thing, and on and on. It becomes this crazy situation where if time moved forward a second, all chaos would be unleashed. Also, you can trace back all the events since each is aimed at the last.
We ended up with six notebook pages stapled together 3x2 and absolutely covered in the graphite of insanity. The teacher kept it and expressed desire to frame it, although he still had it in his desk when I visited two years later.
Love art wars. Had one (also in precalc -- what is it about that class?) on a free day with a friend. Nowhere near that scale though.
I did that too! It was in french class, but my teacher REALLY didn't like us not paying attention so we had to stop.
My friend Heidi and I would pass notes between all of our classes, carried by a little coin purse shaped like a puppy, and we'd add in poems when life was hard. When we went to college, we mailed the puppy back and forth. Not efficient, but still fantastic. I'd recommend it. :)

I was homeschooled until college, so I only had 4-5 years of this terror being real. I'm not sure how long it's been since I dreamt about "it's the end of the semester and oh no I forgot I was registered for this class--I haven't attended at all", but....yeah, pretty sure it was the past couple years.
If not, the memory is pretty salient now that Hank has brought it back up. Age 34.

I wrote in a notebook with my best friend and we went through over 20 in the three years we went to school together.
Sometime in the month before graduation we went through it all, laughed, cried, cringed, saved some songs and poems and drawings, and burnt everything else. It was beautiful.
HANK YOU MAKE ME FEEL UNACCOMPLISHED AS AN ARTIST!!! Like seriously, that art is stuff I would have to work at for a week to achieve!! And it's on stuff like homework which to me says you didn't work on it more than maybe a few hours and GAHHHH!!
Also, despite having just graduated, I passed notes in class during high school. I recently found my Algebra 2 notebook from Freshman year and found notes between my friend Jon and me. They're from one or two days in the span of two weeks but we wrote many many more I recall.

Hank you're maybe about ten years older than I am, texting/facebook/tumblr came a little later for me, unlike the current young generation that has never lived without it. I did stuff like this A LOT! I doodled in class, I made wish lists (on paper), I wanted to be a fashion designer because i loved drawing creative dresses on the back of homework (that was also still on paper)! For some strange reason, I kept a lot of those doodles. For some reason, seeing that you kept those doodles too, makes me feel even more nostalgic about how I used to think.
I had so many notes from friends. I had a binder of notes and drawings we'd pass to each other (and a couple we mailed) all the time. Those are my favorite

Definitely passed notes in high school 2004-2008. We had a notebook in middle school that got swapped between classes but it got to be too conspicuous.

I'm very impressed that Hank can vlog while in the midst of moving house. Moving gives me such an intense sense of "none of my stuff is where it's supposed to be!" that I cannot do my normal activities because I must finish moving first.

My high school nightmare is loosing my class schedule or locker combo. I'm 26 dammit! Lol
I've had dreams about not being able to find a classroom and winding up in a totally different class I hadn't signed up for, being late for a class, totally forgetting I had signed up for a class for a week or so and being behind later on, and, oddly enough, having a college class take a field trip to the middle school I went to. In that last one, the middle school is always abandoned, dark or dim, very dusty or mossy, and run-down.
I just recently graduated high school and yeah notes are still a thing. Not with everyone, but I did with with my friends a lot in APUSH.

O.O I hope you're joking! I'll feel ancient if this is true. Passing notes was the best! You created secret codes and tried to be sly. You made a little "mailbox" in your locker so you could talk to kids who didn't share your lunch period. It's one of those things whose novelty yields the kind of nostalgia that makes you not want to take things for granted.

Yes, Hank, I did give notes to people in high school. In fact, I still have a few from my friends, and they're interesting to look at because you can see the personality of the friend coming out in their style of handwriting, as well as the little embellishments around the margins and such. They were always folded into neat little self-contained envelope thingies, too.

My friends and I graduated from high school in the last five years, and yes, we did pass notes to each other! We kept a notebook of our ramblings and teacher quotes. They were fun mementos of each school years - from our letters to marching band to our chatterings about homecoming to a long list of cliffhangers at the end of The Hobbit.

I've passed notes with my friend during class in high school through the past two years, it's a fun time. I never want to see the note-passing die. And this is so oddly emotional for me to watch, even though I was never there, through all the videos it has felt like I was there sitting next to Hank as he filmed these videos. I'm excited but also just nostalgic that he's not there anymore. On to the next chapter (2 years late). DFTBA :)
In elementary and middle school the cool thing was to write your friends' names in cool colors and cover the paper with inside jokes. We'd also write inside jokes and quotes all over each other's binders and folders. I have so many drawings from friends.

I graduated high school in '09 and we DEFINITELY had fancy-pantsy artistic notes we passed around with our friends. I, like you, have kept them. I'm not in graduate school and we still pass notes to each other and pass doodles to each other when we zone out during a 3 hour lecture. Haha! Good luck with the move!

My school forbids the use of phones in class, which is technophobic and pretty dumb also people don't draw either waaaaaaaay :P
hmm.. I wouldn't say that's technophobic though, more like "please respect your teacher and classmates (and value your education) by not staring at your phone in class" or evn just "know when it is appropriate and inappropriate to use your phone". When I was in high school a mere 6 years ago, they would confiscate your phone for a week if you're caught bringing it out anywhere within the school premises at any time of the day (except for emergencies)

Florence Blue that's how they do it in my school either. There's a wooden shelf by the door in class and you have to put your phone in when you enter and you're only allowed to take it when you leave. People who are found with their phones, no matter if they're actually even using it or not, have it confiscated and only their parent can go retrieve it. And i'm in the last year of high school.
The school board tried to make my school do that, but the teachers thought it was stupid so it only lasted a few weeks while the board's spies were around.
