Wow, what a discovery! Am I hearing their best record? I love this. There a reminiscences to key music history in every sound. The singer is sooo right for this kind of music. Making me think a little bit of Russell Hitchcock just make things better for me. The whole production is excellent! Definitely one of the best progs acts out there. Can’t wait to see them live.

Love the sweet pace of their music, the harmonies. Guitars and synth have that cool tone, we don't need more acrobatics :-) Perfect production. Songs 1,2, and 6 definitely stand out. I think instrumental parts add some distinction to "songs you can sing along with a guitar". I love the voice (some reminiscences IMO to Russell Hitchcock here and there) Perhaps one day we hear a conceptual album from these guys at least there's a certain vibe to it right now. Keep the good work guys! We need more "Mystery" :-)

The "Tales from the Netherlands" is also a very great album! Beside Alan Parsons Project, Pink Floyd, Marillion and Joker´s Paradise my favourite Band! Not only "Every-Day-Music", it is some kind of beautiful and unique sound (especially on headphones)that makes these recordings very special!

There are a great many Genesis influences too. Actually, they use all the typical sounds and tricks of the trade and make something original out of it. I appreciate their craftsmanship and beautiful melodies. Definitely one of the best actual neo-progressive rock bands. They are the Greta Van Fleet of progressive rock (where Greta Van Fleet uses all the tricks and sounds of Led Zeppelin-esque bands and turn them into new great rock music).

The melodic instrumental parts are fabulous - from 29.00 onwards for example. The vocals - Im sorry!: but these prog and symphonic paths have been discovered and trampled before - and better. Positive exception is 45.00min. Around 34.00 min I must be listening to Alan Parsons Project? Magnificident guitar solos accompanied with spheric melody lines lift up the album beyond mediocre performance ;-). In general it needs a punch. Not trying to be rude, but I have listened to prog music for 35 years now... Band has got enormous possibilities and chances. Numerous possiblities for inspiring keyboard solos joining hands with the guitar - 47.00 and further. Keep up the good work... Thanks!

Good review. I find this band quite pleasant to listen to, quite an accomplished bunch of musicians, but it just seldom grabs me by the ears or distracts me from whatever else I'm doing.

    • @ProckGnosis

Ik geloof je hebt gelijk. Many interesting, melodic, and well-played moments, but sort of like APP, the majority of this comes across to me like "nice" background prog. Maybe it's exactly the balance the band wanted, but nothing really blows me away, despite there being a few parts I find kind of cool and occasionally interesting. Again, not bad at all, just not as interesting as I think it could be.
On a side note, this singer, weirdly, does sound quite a bit like their old singer, Benoit David, whom I thought sounded a lot like the vocalist from Styx at times (Dennis DeYoung).

    • @ac0pt
      @ac0pt 5 ปีที่แล้ว

jopo braakhehbbe - I'm sorry but I like vocals very much so seems top be a matter of taste. Its exactly this mellow mood that makes this album so good to hear when working mentally, no need to punch in any way, it works for me.
And yes, you are being rude with all this your presumptions. If its years listening to prog that makes you an expert then you should know less then me... following your logic...

You can buy this on their official band site at www.unicorndigital.com
No middle man, all the profit goes to them, this site belongs to the creator of Mystery (The guitar player and composer), he also produces a bunch of other prog bands so he's also a sound guy and it shows!
For those familiar with the band Ayreon we may say Michel St-Père is the Canadian Arjen Anthony Lucassen.

I intend to buy the whole collection directly on their site. 22 $ CAN each with no transport fee (and no taxes I think).

It may take a few listens - but this one will really grow on you. It is solid prog rock with a little bit of pop flavor in places. I personally really liked the vocals, I think they may have missed an opportunities in a few songs to use some more complex vocal harmonies (a la PT style). Still a fan.

Carl, it's a question that every prog rock fan today has over-asked. There are many, many more like it that have been released across the world over the past 30 years, but the major record labels don't see any money in it and keep on shoving the redundant, over-dung pop on the radio and internet that the their sheeple just keep right on buying. Yes, it really is sad. Punch up Progarchives.com. It's a great band/genre review and description orientated site.

indeed...people in this age just don't have the attention span for prog rock. It's almost like classical music, but in fact worse as we don't even get the "elite" status they enjoy. And classical music lives off that, or it'd be forgotten too imo.

Ignoro si son los mismo Mystery del disco "Theatre of the mind", que aunque siguen siendo igual de baladísticos suenan diferentes, más modernos y más Rock Sinfónico y más Progresivos, pero igualmente buenos.

Beautifully done; always a pleasant listen. The problem is that this album is really six songs of 5-7 minutes each, put on the rack to stretch them into faux-epics. "The Willow Tree" fares worst.
