Well... balance and coordination is something you can train. When I started Irish dance 10 years ago at age 23, my balance was utter shite, while I thought my balance was pretty good. Coordination of my feet has improved a lot over the years and I can now do many steps I couldn't do in the beginning. Don't get me wrong: only few have the talent, are gifted with flexible joints and long muscles, guts, perseverance ánd the money to get to the absolute top, but for almost anyone of us, it's just training, practice and gaining strength.
something help y'all, when you do you ankle rolls in the beginning, point and don't slap your feet down, get the back heel a little louder. When doing the back whip point, and jump in the air by your toes to push off. Both of y'all are turned out until you do the first bang, but other than that you're perfectly fine. Point in the back with the whips. SMILE , and have fun at nationals girls ( and boy)! Y'all will do amazing! Trust me these things I'm pointing out, I do them all the time! Good luck to all of y'all. The costumes are a thing that divides the world of Irish dance in my opinion, based on experiences I have from a number of competitions (both as a spectator and contestant myself). One says it tradition, the other says they have become outrageously sparkly, neon-coloured and what not over the years. Their shape may be traditional but that's about it ;) But besides that, Irish dance is also divided into organisations, you've got CLRG-dancers (nope, I'm not able to write the abbreviation down in full...) who are also called Commission-dancers. As far as I know, CLRG is the biggest organisation out there. Than you have WIDA-dancers and a lot of other organisations that all have their own beliefs and values they uphold. And other organisations can tend to focus a bit more on the fun someone has during dancing, while others (Commission for example) tends to focus on technique, posture and what not. Some organisations allow Sean Nós dancing, an older form of Irish dance which is more loose and has not such strict posture (my teacher, Commission, hates it ;) ) Hope this cleared it up a bit for you ;)
