The core fundamental 2 changes to healthcare that are needed is: 1) Canada needs to use the Nurse Practitioner system, we don't and that means we severely lack professionals on that level and instead stick overqualified doctors into that role and create a worse shortage. 2) Start recognizing medical degrees from peer nations like everyone else so doctors who immigrate here don't need to go back to school for years to start practicing again and therefore just say screw it and immigrate to a different country instead.
I think NL is wrong about for there to be more doctors the average quality would have to drop, I dont think thats the case, because it supposes that every doctor in the field now is every person capable of being a doctor, plenty of people could go into the profession if they were inclined but dont for whatever reason. If you eliminate certain barriers of entry to the medical field (namely the cost barrier) you would likely entice plenty of people who are fully capable of being good doctors in to the field.
In Canada the issue isn't even about how many capable people there are, it's about keeping them here. We have major brain drain because there's relatively very little incentive to practice here.

As a kid I did wonder why we didn’t have one lesson a week in “medicine” or “nursing” or something. I’m sure just some basic medical knowledge would help ease the strain on the NHS 😭

And you can become an NP right out of undergrad via a part time degree mill school with minimal standards for education or clinical hours (and even the good ones are trivial cuz I wrote answers for some of the forum post homework assignments for aspiring NP family while I was in high school, and their professors said the writing was “very professional”). So they bounce me between their “specialist” NP friends who order the same labs, prescribe another course of an antibiotic “in case it works this time”, and then repeat it all again a few months later because they very literally don’t know better, and the Facebook group they consulted for help didn’t give any definitive answers. Make of that system what you will.
