    1689 Reformed Baptist here. These have been my favorite and go to commentaries lately:
    1. Reformed Commentary of Scripture (My Favorite)
    2. Ancient Commentary on Scripture
    3. New International Commentary of New and Old Testament (Especially Roman's by Douglas Moo)
    4. Preaching The Word Commentaries
    5. Jon Courson Application Commentary (Yes I understand it's not reformed)
    Here and there: Tyndale, Pillar, Calvin, Mathew Henry, John MacAurthur
    Want to get: Reformed Expository Commentary (Looks really great minus only being written by Presbyterians)
    I have logos and it makes it very easy to use all of these for deep study.

    Shalom! am new to your channel and your videos are amazing and informative.
    I am a Messianic Jew & I read Bible on my own and I follow Jewish roots I read the CJB version and I need a Commentary Bible with messianic perspective. And whenever I watch your videos it's helpful but at the same time it's hard to pick because you always mention that authors have their own perspective. So please if you can help me.

    Hi, It's great to see someone so passionate and knowledgeable about biblical commentaries. I was wondering if you'd be able to make a suggestion or two for me. I'm interested in looking for a commentary series that is:
    1 - Mid-level
    2 - Exegetical and/or Historical
    3 - non-theological. I know that's a bit of a strange or tough ask but basically something that Christians, Muslims, Jews and Atheists alike would enjoy. Preferably created with contributions from a diverse group of scholars attempting neutrality.
    I'm not sure if you'll even see this since the video a year old. But if so, I'd appreciate any suggestions. Thanks for the helpful video regardless.

    Man I love your content! This was exactly what I was looking for. I am currently weighing in my options. I am a non native English speaker and I watched a couple of your videos already. Do you think the Tyndale commentary set would be a good starting point. I know its intermediary but I read online its pretty easy to understand? I am not reformed or arminian. I am someone who is exploring and doesn't have a bias necessarily.
    Keep up the good work bro.
    God bless

      The TOTC and TNTC series' are excellent resources. I would say they are true mid-level, not introductory, but they don't require a reader know the original biblical languages. They won't be as easy to understand as an introductory commentary, but that may just mean your pace of reading will be slower -- which is not an insult! -- but often mid-level commentators assume the reader has more knowledge about the subject matter than introductory-level commentators.

      I would look into the Bible Speaks Today volumes. A lot of people love John Stott's commentaries in that series. In may be a good idea to look at a few preview page from a few TOTC/TNTC volumes on Amazon, and then do the same for the Bible Speaks Today volumes.

    I think that the Word Biblical Commentary and the New International Greek Testanent Commentary are on the same level. In the case of the Commentary on Revelarion in both series, the three volumes of Aune in the WBC have more details and more technical points than all of the rest.

    • @BestBibleCommentaries

      It's broadly evangelical, and mostly introductory. It's focused more on the history, background, literature, and exegesis, and not so much on application.

    Thank you for this video. I have been looking for a long time for something like this. Please forgive my ignorance but when looking at commentaries is there a way to tell which ones are beginning, mid-level, and scholarly by the series, books or otherwise? What are the best places online to order commentaries to get the series etc.?
    Thanks again and God bless!

    • @BestBibleCommentaries
      @BestBibleCommentaries 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I apologize -- I missed seeing this question last week. Sometimes the title gives away the content. For example, if a series has the word "exegetical" in it it's often mid-level, e.g. Zondervan Exegetical Commentary on the Old Testament and Baker Exegetical Commentary on the New Testament. If it has the word "Greek" it's likely advanced/technical, e.g. New International Greek Testament Commentary. But I think the most accurate way to assess the content is to do a little research on the series or volume. Sometimes the information on the back of the book will describe it's intended audience. I hope my website and videos can help with this, too. Like this page on the types of different commentaries: www.bestbiblecommentaries.com/types-of-commentaries-a-guide-for-bible-readers/

    My brother, could you please check if I understanded correctly about the content ? The tecnical commentaries and the exegetical commentaries complete each other, right ? The tecnical will focus mainly in the original language and the exegetical on the ''original context''. Did I understand it right or does the tecnical commentaries also include what the exegetical commentaries have ? Thank you so much for this amazing video and articles!!!!

    • @BestBibleCommentaries
      @BestBibleCommentaries 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You are on the right track. Exegesis is usually defined as discovering the original meaning of the text, which includes analyses of author, setting, date, genre, etc, but it also includes insight and understanding into the original biblical language. While most technical commentaries mention all the subtopics that make up the work of exegesis, many tend to "major" on explaining the biblical language. Yet technical commentaries can take different approaches, so it's wise to do research volume by volume. For example, NIGTC volumes are well-reviewed for discussing exegesis and parsing the Greek. On the other hand, the EGGNT series discusses author, date, etc briefly in the introduction to each commentary, but the main body of the commentary is primarily parsing. On the EGGNT series: www.bestbiblecommentaries.com/exegetical-guide-greek-new-testament/
