I really love hearing someone else saying that he prints everything he has to read. I know people do, but I just havent met them. I too cant stand reading in the PC, mostly because I like to "play" with them and I just dont enjoy being too much in the computer.
I used to print everything, too. However, I then bought an iPad and it honestly changed my student life. The quality of my note-taking went through the roof, I can easily create incredible visual study boards and mental maps, incorporate things-including, say, snippets of videos like these in my notes, etc. All of it, of course, only works and is nice if you have the pen. But yes, I can keep everything I own together, but I totally understand why you'd want to print stuff out, I still do that sometimes, and the physical properties of paper are definitely incomparable to anything else. :)
I wrote two books relying on printed material with hand written annotations and sticky notes (alas; not the aesthetically pleasing Coco Fusen variety). I am convinced the tactility of the paper afforded better opportunities to flick through pages and Cherry pick ideas and sections to quote.😀
Yeah, printing out university “readings” got very expensive very quickly - just in ink cartridges! A tablet is the way to go paperless, easier for reading and notating, and it works out for the best because it then becomes searchable. Love your whole analogue/tech hybrid vibe.
These videos make me feel more present in the moment than others do. They give me the same feeling that I get when having an in-depth conversation with a loved one whom I have not seen or heard from in a long time. I've watched other people's; "What's in my bag?" videos, but none have felt as honest and heartfelt as this one.
I am a 62 year old attorney/adjunct professor of law, and most important, life long dark member of Dark Academia---and thank you Robin for teaching me----Cheers to my fellow life long learners!

Your videos have become more aesthetically pleasing. Can you make a video on how you write a paper in literature? Like how you approach your research on a piece of text? Also about the format and key things.
It is so nice to hear that students outside of Ireland are studying Irish literature and it is not just Ulysses! I sincerely hope you enjoy annotating James Joyce :)
I used to print out all my readings and then scan them back onto my computer after I marked them up by pen. Eventually I got comfortable doing that digitally with an iPad and Apple Pencil. I still write all my lecture notes and thoughts down on Rhodia paper using my Pelikan m805, and I scan those as well for archiving.
I do the same thing, I need to write on paper to process things better but I don’t like to have a million notebooks laying around, so scanning was the solution I found. and until now I was the only one I knew to do that. I’m glad I found confort in this comment to know there’s more people who do that. Sometimes it feels weird bc no one on the internet does that
@@marianadeoliveira382 And I only use loose leaf paper from notepads so I can scan them. Yes this is something that I haven’t seen anyone else do either outside of those who use erasable notebooks (but then you can’t use a fountain pen!)
Speaking of tabs at 2:55, I remember studying literature in highschool and oh my days my books were completely filled with those tabs and sticky notes! Your video is also quite relaxing and interesting to listen too, keep up the good work and good luck on this semester of uni!
Actually, it’s not boring. You’re amazing! You really travel through thoughts, ideas and you’re passionate about everything you do when it comes to art. I don’t usually like what’s in my bag videos because what’s in a bag is nobody’s business. And besides, most are not that interesting anyway. But you hit different. On every video, you invite us into your journey. I also carry a notebook but Instead of only one pen, I carry a few pens. So I understand the enthusiasm . Yeah , I’m new to your channel and I’m loving it! Thank you for your videos. They are very helpful.
I would love a how to tab in a book and note taking video! Love the video! I'm also addicted to these -what's in my bag vids-. It's refreshing to see one from you!
Oh my gosh I love this version of what’s in my bag! I finally don’t feel alone anymore in the similar stuff I carry in my bag for reading. I loveeee all the items in your “ boring stuff”
I just found your channel, and you are so funny in the best way. The way you speak is so engaging and just very positive. I am glad I found your channel.
I'm really excited for the tabbing books guide video you'll upload next! Thanks for your video, i got inspired to organize my bag for the upcoming semester XD
As someone who has watched WAY too many diaper bag videos, this was refreshing. I think all the items you carry are fantastic and simple. I may check out that pen; I have never used a fountain pen before but that one is intriguing. My husband splurged on the Remarkable 2 a couple months ago and he is really loving his as well. It helps him organize his work notes as well as personal. Plus our two children enjoy passing it back and forth during to church to keep them quiet. Thanks for sharing.
I’d really appreciate, as a newcomer to all that is literature, that you make a video on how to annotate fictional books. I’ve already gathered some insight on how to do it with nonfiction/fact based books from your previous video “How to get the most out of a book” including your companion essay and it really did help me a lot with my second to first pick. Now that I’ve gathered a whole lot of classics and essential basics, stuff that were mentioned in my previous-current read, I’m lost on how to approach it aptly.
I also love fountain pens, but I have not invested big in one. I just use an $12 Pilot Kakuno. I'm primarily an artist these days so the fountain pens are just one of many types of ink delivery mechanisms: changing them up keeps things lively and there's some wonderful stuff even among the office supply gels and rollerballs - I really like the character of Uni AIR pens although they are gushers on most papers. The paper quality matters(for ink, a smooth/bristol surface in medium weight usually gives the most polished, sharp lines, while textured papers impart some rough character but make many inks bleed), but the binding mostly doesn't, because what you do for that is use a binder clip and maybe manila cardstock if you need a cover. One clip can turn an ordinary wirebound notebook or glued sketchpad into a solid block that won't wear in transport - and that clip can also be a bookmark, a collation tool, and more. Clips are an "always keep in your bag" item for me. And the manila lets you decorate how you want, it's a pretty robust material.
something i like for marking my beautiful copies of books is transparent sticky notes. it can go right over the text and along with my page flags they help me keep my books organized. sadly they need to be written on in pencil or ballpoint because of the material, but i find it to be super helpful
This video makes me want to be a literature student so bad! The analog/ tech vibes are so good. 😍 I'm still considering a reMarkable even though I have an iPad. I just realized that this device really distracts me and all I want is something that can replace paper.
In terms of your Moleskine paper, check the QC inspection sticker in the back cover pocket. I have heard, and confirmed myself, that if it is a light blue color (robin’s egg blue) it correlates with fountain pen friendly paper.
It’s really nice to see that i’m not the only one who can’t stand to read on the computer. I also have lots of papers and i like that and also i don’t have the money to buy a tablet lol
I purchased Pilot metropolitan as my first fountain pen at age of 30, and now this has become my only pen.. only problem is all the pages that I need to write upon are of not of same quality.😢 Starting my Masters in English Literature this December, subscribed to your channel ❤
The way my heart did a flip when you bumped the mic.. 😅 It’s late and I’m sleepy and your voice was soothing and suddenly THUNDER 😂 On another note, I just got a new Molskine journal myself but I got the ‘artist’ version so the pages would be thicker. I think that’s only available with the blank page journals though.. but good to know they’ve upgraded the other ones!
I'd love to see a review of the digital notepad you're using. The one thing I've always been curious about with such devices is what distinguishes them from an ipad and apple pencil, or a windows equivalent? To me, they should all be capable of the same things in terms of reading, note taking, annotating, and so on. But an ipad or Windows tablet has the added benefit of being able to be used for many other functions. So what is it about such devices that makes them more useful/appealing than a standard tablet?
Personally, I feel like pencil and paper help me if there's not a notebook, I'll get distracted on a pc. You have many useful tips that have helped me figure out ways to study and obsorb information better even for personal use
Hello Walden,Can u make a video about how to write when you're experiencing grief,I never had this experience before, but recently I found my self gave birth to wonderful pieces of writing under the influence of sadness and teary eyes,I just want to know if you can relate to that experience when it comes to writing.
Would love a review on reMarkable. I’ve been toying with the idea of getting one because I too print most of my course readings. I need to physically tough and mark them up and my iPad is too distracting at times.
Clicked immediately when I saw the Pilot Dissapearing Nib/VP. I saw it from such a tiny thumbnail that now I'm concerened about my fountain pen fixation 😅. Curious as to what ink you have in there! Also awesome carry ☆
I use coco fusen too XD (the plastic flags) My friend got them for me from Japan and I started using them today in my new commonplace book :3 As you can tell I've been very inspired by your channel
when it comes to using fountain pens on thinner paper, i know some people who use a backing board or a pencil board to prevent it from bleeding through to the next page!
i recommend getting a good monochrome laser printer (like 200 bucks from officeworks) - realised this after i finished my undergrad and after i spent hundreds on printing at uni unfortunately. ink is really cheap if you don't buy official cartridges, ends up being next to nothing
Moleskine hasn't upgraded their paper, they've just become wildly inconsistent since outsourcing production entirely to China. Some of their notebooks are really nice and will last forever though others will bleed ink and fall apart. Leuchtturm1917 is having the same problems - they have been made in Taiwan for years though recent batches are coming, increasingly, from China and of worse (and far more inconsistent) quality. My favorite store only sells batches made in Taiwan because they had so many returns of the Chinese-made models.
