So uhh yeah, with the recent changes with the Anniversary update it's no longer possible to defend in the front. Parabeetle's video has a guide on how to defend in the back. I'm not sure if it's possible without treasures or high lvl friendship defending in the back.

I think it's beatable without magician using my strat but really hard. Byakuren passive can nullify the lack of magician.
