Was this the first time Skating had been used in a race at this level - watching Bill Koch come in at 2:13 in the video?

Bill saw this techique used in a long run competition and it was was an efficient method. And no rules was applyed for this during this time. But the first time the 2 different styles was separated by rules and in classic/free skiing competition was in the WC 1987 i Oberstdorf.

As early as 1974 in the World Championships in Falun, the skating style was used at the finish line.
