Zhang Fei I found to be a pretty great vanguard too. He never gets tired and can rout an entire army with his shout. He gets so many kills in my playthroughs, it's actually quite insane.
There are alot of very good characters. I think its not that easy to pick the "best"... My guess is also that Chu Xu will get nerfed at some point tbh. His skillset feels just broken as hell.
I really think that, if you're doing a list, you really need to qualify what's on the list. Because, on one hand you talk about faction currency abilities for some generals (which, if you don't star with Liu Bei's faction, you don't get his Confederacy/Unity abilities as an example), and then you talk about their buffs they provide if Leader/Heir/Prime Minister, and then sometimes you talk about their battle performance or unit selection, and those are three completely separate things to evaluate characters by. Like, with Sun JIan as the best Sentinel, half the points were not about him as a Sentinel but rather him as a faction leader, and yes he's a good faction leader, but if him or Zhao Yun were in the character pool and you could only pick one, would you really skip Zhao Yun over him? Personally, without more rigidly defined criteria about what a Best Warlord is (and, if you're going to sort these by class, then it should honestly just be skill/battle based rather than Leader/Campaign based IMO), this list is completely pointless and you really learn nothing as to why X is better than Y.
Hey brotha.. Totally valid points here.. Like I commented on another gentleman's post, If I could do this over again, I would set out hard criteria or at least assumptions going into the video. I apologize for that as it does kind of create a misleading forum for the basis of judging characters.
That's just personal preference though, I would 100% pick Sun Jian over Zhao Yun if we're talking personal preference. Also I run a community bug fix so Zhao Yun doesn't get his fleet footed trait.
@@Craz3t0wn It's not really a personal preference though, I mean fair play if you would pick Sun Jian if he popped up in your character pool over Zhao Yun due to your personal preference but his point is Zhao Yun is definitely a stronger battle sentinel and if Sun Jian isn't your faction leader there isn't really much benefit to having him. I mean he's cool and obviously strong too but there are stronger sentinels, so if you were choosing based on who was more valuable to your faction and who would have more impact on the battlefield then it would be Zhao Yun.
Ever since i was a child whenever i read about Zhuge Liang i just think of him as that guy in your team just trying to carry the whole game by himself :D
You can't really have a top 5 best generals if you don't consider ALL of the generals, Lu Bu should be in here even if you don't like it. Also I think you should not count the faction traits, it should be a list of generals anyone can get at any point. If you like Sun Jian because he has an easier start, well that's not really fair to other sentinels that CAN'T be faction leaders at the start of the campaign
Sun Jian's movement is only if you are moving across a river or sea. So it's really situational. I'd say Zhao Yun is probably still slightly better one of the reasons being he starts the campaign as one of the youngest legendary lords meaning he will probably survive through the whole thing you aren't super slow and will get more levels than Sun Jian.
Sun Jian was my first play through and I found that even though his bonuses is situational. The massive amount of territory you can get as him can actually be detrimental if your armies have to travel for several turns to defend your borders. I found that the movement speed on water can be really useful with the large rivers and coastline in his territory. I also ended the game at age 79 as Sun Jain with both Sentinels in my court being lvl 8
Zhao Yun is probably worse in combat than Sun Jian though. His Elemental Vigor nerf hits him really bad; it never passes phrase 1 for me, even though I was at a disadvantage in battle. He is shit at duelling now. Zhao Yun's charges still hurt though: his fleet-footed passive allows you to go right through enemy frontline units without getting slowdown, so you can charge their backlines almost right afterward.
@@Al3xtheMeh I don't think defending is actually that hard when you summon merc stacks + teleporting generals. Southern China is just Sun Jian's free real estates.
Best Vassals: Liu Bei & Ma Tong (hardly betray when you're emperor late game + quick to mobilize army to attack enemies) Best Faction: Liu Chong (show of force + Chen royal guard + fortitude), Sun Ce (mercenary retinue), Cao Cao (proxy war + xhao bothers + food perks) Best General (duel wise & non-ability reliance): Zhao Yun, Guan Yu, Lu Bu Best General (ability reliance against army/generals): Liu Chong (show of force work against army and general), Zhang Yan (ambush when attacking I'm counting it as ability), Lu Bu (charge ability and aoe slam)
Check out Taishi Cis abilities. He can melt entire units with his poison arrow, and any general with his bow if his passive is charged, all with out any danger to himself. Oh and he has an AOE bow attack to top it off.
quality video but it feels like it wanted to be 2 different videos. One for the best officer of each type in combat, Xu Chu is a great example of that. The other video being more faction oriented with stuff like Sun Jian's advantages, Lie Bei's unification ect.
I have been finding the Unique characters who don't have portraits to be very strong when combined with armour that is part of named sets. For a sentinel, either Yu Jin (for pure Expertise ) or Gongsun Du (for higher Resolve and Instinct ) are good picks. If you can get a hold of the rare sword Sovereign of Blades combined with the rare armour Spirit of the First Artist they give the added effect of +10% ranged block chance for the retinue, with this and some other modifiers I have managed to get over 100% ranged block chance on Jian Sword Guard, which makes the AI just waste arrows on them. That rare armour also provides charge reflect against all enemies for the retinue, which makes the Jian Sword Guard really good against cav and other high charge infantry too. Guo Jia is also a really good strategist. He can get his cunning higher than Kong Rong, has the brilliant trait, and can be equipped with the Robe of the Omen Maker armour which, when combined with an Imperial Bow gives +50% Ranged firing rate. Add in a Heavenly Sword and he gives +10 melee evasion for the whole army. If you then equip him with the Tycoon + Jade Archer you get +25% Ranged damage, which is better than the Crane Feather Fan as it also applies to archers and trebs. I have been experimenting with having two strategists in each army (because archers/crossbows and trebs are so OP) and have found that when kitted out as I have described you can actually reach the firing rate cap with just regular crossbows, so no need to get the Onyx Dragons. Regarding Prime Minister/heir buffs, Pang De 's +100% food production faction wide, Taishi Ci's +10% Ranged damage and +10 Melee evasion for melee infantry, Pang Tong's +15% Ranged damage, and Sun Ce's +100% charge bonus for shock cav are all stand outs.
Guo jia and sima yi are by far the best strategists, guo jia is available immediately, has insane cunning and gives 100% uptime full map vision. sima yi disables all enemy abilities it's ridiculous. They have 2 of zhuge liang's abilities as permanent, mapwide abilities.
Sun Ren for Heartseeker, Hi Yi for fatigue maintenance and unit formations, Huang Shao for overall, Taishi ci for kiting armies, Kong Rong for the best crossbows ingame, Yuan Shao for commander, Zhang Liao for cheap army builds that are still strong, Xu Chu for Polearm builds.

Glad I chose Sun Jian as my first campaign! I have pretty easily conquered a quarter of the map, annexed my vassal for another 25% and fixed the financial BS that came about after annexing. My last turn I played last night he passed from old age though! Sad lol
Gonna be honest, while I like this video, it really doesn’t feel all that good. Like, are you talking about who’s the best of that class, or who starts with the best campaign bonuses because of their faction? Because literally the only thing Sun Jian has is his faction unique mechanics that you don’t even need him alive to have. He honestly doesn’t it even make it into the top three sentinels in the game because of just how good Taishi Ci is at killing people and how good Zhao Yun is as a duelist. Heck, even Zhang Liao is better than Sun Jian thanks to his special skills. Basically, I’m saying that next time, take out faction specific effects because it’s not giving an accurate picture of who’s the best character of a class. Because if you made any other sentinel the leader of Wu (which is very much possible) they would have those same advantages. Likewise, Zhuge Liang is only top strategist in this video because he’s being given Liu Bei’s unique faction units, which you can theoretically do with Sima Yi as well. Furthermore, when you title the video Top 5 Warlords based on class, I expect only starting warlords to show up. And yet neither your best Vanguard, your best Strategist, nor your best Champion are beginning Warlords. Maybe you should have just named this best Officers instead? As it is, the title feels confusing and misleading.

Ma Chao over Zheng Fei? Pretty sure it was the other way around. Pretty sure Xu Huang is the best Sentinel due to his high expertise and resolve is just ridiculous. Both him and Zhao Yun have the same skillset. Fleet-footed, you can see Xu Huang's name rather than Zhao Yun. My opinion: Best Vanguard: Lu Bu - not debatable since his trait and armor gives him enough bonuses to even be on the top. Best Sentinel: Xu Huang- his high resolve and expertise are just completely ridiculous and since both him and Zhao Yun have completely the same skillset, he's on top due to his weapon. Best Commander: Between Liu Bei and Cao Cao. Cao Cao is more of a rear commander since his cunning and authority can be at the max, giving missile more ammunition while Liu Bei is a commander you can charge in with. Best Champion: Xu Chu, his skillset along with Giantbane is ridiculous. He's basically quite literally the best hero in the entire total war series. Best Strategist: Kinda depend on a player. Best buffs: Zhuge Liang and Sima Yi(best debuff), I haven't used Zhuge Liang but both his and Sima Yi background are ridiculous with cunning. Best battlefield strategist: Guo Jia, he actually started with a ridiculous high cunning, even more than Sima Yi and Zhuge Liang and his passive ability just gives players advantage over everyone since he can see all enemy units even when hidden. Zhuo Yu has this ability as well but a different name, haven't used Zhuo Yu at all but couldn't tell is he can see hidden units. Best attacking strategist: Jia Xu, he's basically your strategist assassin since his active abilities is to increase his attack power and turn invisible for like 30 seconds. Honorable mention: Pang Tong(healer strategist)
suprised you don't have zhang fei as top vanguard, his fatigue immune which is a giant plus for a vanguard if you gonna have him destroy thousands of troops, and second he has a -100 moral debuff, which is crazy. a trick that can be used with him is drag your enemy to the edge of the map pop the -100 moral debuff and watch them rout and leave the map, instant win ( got it by accident when i was ambushed a second time by zheng yan, barely had a force left, only had zhang fei and zhugeliang with maybe 50 troops left, tried to run off the map coudn't during the second ambush, and poped the skill in desperation, think i beat a 2000+ unit army with xu chu in it just with that one skill, op as hell
I don't think Zhuge's range damage buff is worth losing Wisdom of the River. Wisdom is just so useful: you can melt units as well as generals with it. It is useful through out the game too: high armor late game units die while trash militia mobs die even faster. Way of the wind is not that useful once units actually decent armor though.
I play mostly the TWW series and I thought this video was a brief Intro for "legendary lords" that are good to start learning on, but I can't find Zhuge Liang, or Xu Chu Anywhere, Am I misunderstanding something? Are they DLC that I just can't find somewhere?
I saw somewhere that Xu Chu is pronounced Shu Choh. Anyway, the guy is a damn monster in melee. It takes him no time at all to kill other characters but his biggest weakness is his low expertise/melee evasion. I believe his base melee evasion is actually 0%, so his huge health pool kind of compensates for that.
Actually guys. I don't know if xu chu got patched. But if you just base it off his passives he looses to quite a lot of people. He has good abilities but so do other people. And in those videos the AI's do not use their abilites while Xu Chu does because someone is controlling him. Doesn't seem fair does it? Lemme give yall an example. Guan Yu has an ability called God of War. 75k splash damage. Literallly a 1 hit ko. Now doesn't seem fair huh?

if you wanna make a list about top 5 best for each class, do the top 5 best for each class, not with their factions starts and bonus lmao
My opinion:
Best Vanguard: Lu Bu - not debatable since his trait and armor gives him enough bonuses to even be on the top.
12:29 Sun Ren - exists. Literally everyone - make her an heir
That Liu Bei at 12:45 looks like the save file from the reddit thread
suprised you don't have zhang fei as top vanguard, his fatigue immune which is a giant plus for a vanguard if you gonna have him destroy thousands of troops, and second he has a -100 moral debuff, which is crazy. a trick that can be used with him is drag your enemy to the edge of the map pop the -100 moral debuff and watch them rout and leave the map, instant win ( got it by accident when i was ambushed a second time by zheng yan, barely had a force left, only had zhang fei and zhugeliang with maybe 50 troops left, tried to run off the map coudn't during the second ambush, and poped the skill in desperation, think i beat a 2000+ unit army with xu chu in it just with that one skill, op as hell
Your ability to pronounce the names is gnarly
Hahaha that bad huh?!
@@italianspartacus I’m bad! Your “white rice” hahaha
Feel bad that Dian Wei wasnt up here
I don't think Zhuge's range damage buff is worth losing Wisdom of the River. Wisdom is just so useful: you can melt units as well as generals with it. It is useful through out the game too: high armor late game units die while trash militia mobs die even faster. Way of the wind is not that useful once units actually decent armor though.
how do you get Xu chu?
Randomly ull get an event called "Tiger Fool" but dont count on it just get a mod
The thing that's weird for me about the game is what they made Cao Cao. Everywhere I look he was portrayed as militaristic not diplomatic.
I play mostly the TWW series and I thought this video was a brief Intro for "legendary lords" that are good to start learning on, but I can't find Zhuge Liang, or Xu Chu Anywhere, Am I misunderstanding something? Are they DLC that I just can't find somewhere?
HOW IS SIMA YI NOT THE FIRST STRATEGIST!?
Romance of the three kingdoms was a book written 1500 years after the period. Name of this chapter of history is Three Kingdoms period xD
Harmless Burke I think pronounced shu choo
X in Chinese is an sh-sound and a "u" at the end is like "oo" in English. So Xu Chu is basically Shoo Choo
Harmless Burke No, it’s actually “Shü (like the German “ü”) Choo”.
Where is the veteran and healer class?
Can’t have a best of and then leave out the best vanguard :P
He's just the best full stop.
08:50. But they are REALLY short on ammo. Almost too short. They are very strange hybrid units.
is it just me or does this guy kind of sound like Salman Khan from Khan Academy?
many days spent cramming for exams now im cramming to reunite china
I feel Sima Yi would be in the top 5
How can I get that bandit queen? She doesn't wanna marry, she doesn't want to be a vessel, she won't give in when conquered.... the girl won't give me a chance
Try to be sweet, understanding, but also be somewhat bold and confident. Ask her out and take it from there. Good luck
@@TheShadow079 negative 68 on the negotiations.... offered 4 jewelry... the silver ones. Land, food money and annual payments. She won't spread her legs
Maybe she just isn't the one, bro.
Gotta let someone else destroy her faction and then pray she shows up in your character pool. Only way I’ve seen it work.
If her factions is destroyed, and not by player, she will be available in character pool. But it's a rare possibility, in my opinion.
More efficient is to vassalize and then annex her faction, or confederate her.
What about Guan Yu and Zheng Fei?
No shock cav king and best vanguard should be sun ce the 100 charge bonus is madness even shitty red cav can crush and wipe out anything with that bonuses
I dont think faction bonuses and "father of 3 legendary characters" should be considered at all when ranking top characters
My runner up vanguard is the drunken warrior
Fleet footed isn't Zhao Yun's skill, it's a bug that he has it. It's supposed to belong to Xu Huang. Also dude Sima Yi's whitewater ability literally makes it so that if he's in the battle enemy generals can't use abilities, I'd say that is better than anything Zhuge Liang has. (Though I might be biased, big Sima Yi fan and Zhuge Liang hater here lol)
poor gongsun zan
Game: "Vanguards are the best at dealing enemy units, and Champions are the best at killing other generals!"
My Xiahou Dun who just cleared an entire retinue of Sabre infantry by himself:
So let's exclude the best vanguard.
you clearly havent seen what trmplays is doing with his lu bu on legendary dif...
Lu Bu is deliberately not on this list, he was never going to appear because he's too good
ma chao is better then lu bu if you ask me wich is cool because in the history he was considered to be even greater then lu bu
Im just dissapointed in you spartacus, lu bu can beat every other single vanguard in game in one-on-ones EASILY, its a CRIME not to include lu bu, you cant have the best list and NOT have THE BEST.
I hope they go back to China, I would not mind Total War Seven Kingdoms
what faction gets Xu Chu?
Got him twice with Cao Cao.
xu chu was cao cai favorite general in the romance of the 3 kingdoms
no lu bu REEE
Chapter Chaplain??? Wtf is this skull headed space marine, and why is there not a video about them with a decent voice over??
Feels more like you explains what makes hero A is good and what makes hero B is good, rather than explaining why A is better than B and who you would choose over A or B which supposed to be the purpose of the video according to the title.
Lmao Zhuge Liang better than Sima Yi? what are you smoking
It is true that Zhuge is better then sima yi because of the buff he gives to archer units. On top of that, his fan gives a permanent bonus dmg to crosbows which makes him a absolute powerhouse. You are gonna change your mind when you try it.
No lubu! automatic dislike
No Lü Bu no like
is is the worst kind of total war game ever made... to overpowered generals, multiplayer is broken, and it all looks the same... such a shame..
