@singby pass So true. What tickles me is that whatever the US lobbyists push for, Putin does the exact opposite. He’s immediately banned GMO, now well into the slow process of converting the wheat plains to no till and cover crops, dedesertifidation in arid areas and pushed for Russian provinces to encourage regenerative and sustainable agriculture production. Not getting political here, just saying that whatever big agra pushes in DC, the answer is to speed up the complete opposite.

Excellent demonstration, Greg! I'm glad you did this experiment and shared the results with us. Grasslands, ruminants, and their predators (us) are *symbiotes.* You cannot have any one of these three things without the other two. Grasslands also support a greater diversity and quantity of animal life than any other type of terrestrial ecosystem. How does it help either the world's humans or its animals to eliminate grasslands, which is the *inevitable* result of eliminating ruminant grazing?! The only reason we're able to even _grow_ crops is because of the work of grazing ruminants, predators, and grasses creating fertile soil over millions of years, and cropping merely unwinds that process of soil-building until nothing is left but a desert wasteland. Pastoralism is the only truly sustainable food production system; if our species is to have a future it must be based on pastoralism, not the monocropping of annual plants.

That land square is not just failing to collect solar energy. The soil matrix is dead and can no longer hold water. The ruminants help maintain the water storage capacity of the land, slowing water down, allowing it to percolate and refill the water table, which is critical to maintaining water supplies for non-animal food crops.

In the book ‘Gardeners of Eden’ by Dan Dagget he shows the research regarding the weight of the animals moving across the landscape intermittently and how it creates a ‘pumping’ capillary action like a heart beat drawing the water to the upper soils in addition to appropriate disturbance to stimulate growth. I think he calls it ‘lub-dubbing’ after the sound of a heartbeat.
Studies on ranches in Arizona and New Mexico using this method have proven it many times over. Thanks for again showing us the blessings of being stewards of the land and the relationship to the animals being tended to properly.
