    It is scary how many people in these comments lack the critical thinking to read into the lyrics. He's not criticizing fat people, he's criticizing how it's virtually impossible to avoid eating crap in the USA.

      He is criticizing both the corporations for crap food, and people for allowing themselves to get fat by choosing to eat crap food. It is a problem that involves both the consumer and the producer.

      I believe this line might be in reference to the former drag queen now known as King Tyra, who was met with excessive force after he called the police following being the victim of a hit and run.
      wow shocker!!
      A black man ended up getting tased and arrested after HE called the police for help as a victim of a crime!
      Long story short, after the police station investigated themselves and found that they weren’t at fault 🙄, through staging a one man protest, King Tyra was able to get this corrupt station in Florida closed for good (there was year’s worth of other evidence of the station’s corruption all of their dirty dealings).

    Whoah.. I just listened 10 times in a row in disbelief. You captured in a song how I’ve felt my entire life, battling my weight, surviving multiple eating disorders, trying every diet on earth, exercising until I collapsed. The culture of shame is so strong in the U.S. that an intelligent conversation about health and weight is impossible, including with doctors. The company’s profiting off our demise orchestrate a society where we blame the individual and bully others for entertainment. That way we’re too ashamed and distracted to ever look closely at the people making our food, medicines, etc.
    I’ve been searching all my life for this song and I’m very grateful to the algorithm tonight for bringing me here. Please keep writing songs, you’re extremely talented and very intelligent.

I'm an overweight person with diabetes. Can anyone guess what the hardest habit for me to break is? I've got neuropathy in my feet that's so bad, it's hard for me to wear sandles. I'm only 44 yrs old. It's the soda for me.....cherry Pepsi, vanilla coke, all the mixtures in those new machines. I go for weeks without it sometimes, and then I give in to a "treat." Then, before long, I'm right back where I started. I take accountability for my choices, but it's just so damn hard. Thank you for this song. You sing it beautifully.

    The fat shaming in the comments is insane considering the message of the song does not seem to be about fat people at all, but rather mega corporations who do their best to engineer things that are incredibly addictive and extremely bad for you.
    Why would he spend so much time talking about the companies and the ingredients, and "self-investigations," if the message was actually about self control.
    One last point that people are letting fly over their heads... Cigarette companies would use the claim that doctors recommend smoking "healthy brands." One such brand was Camel, and they used this slogan to sell them: "More doctors smoke Camels than any other brand." And it took us years to do anything about it legally.
    In my opinion, the true message of this song is that we need to stop shaming fat people, and start targeting sinister corporations that put absolute garbage in our food with no repercussions. Take some legal action, folks. Jesse Welles has not punched down so far, why would he start now?

      the cause of widespread obesity isn't the ingredients or the chemicals they put into food, its the portion size. Americans demand coke by the bucket and burgers so large one meal is enough calories is enough to feed two people for a day. obviously high fructose corn syrup and seed oils are terrible for your health and gut, but they are extremely cheap which is why you can have such large portions without the high costs. Japan consumes a lot of highly addicting snacks, yet doesn't have an issue with obesity because they understand that the simple equation of calories in > calories out, and have a workplace culture that promotes healthy living, you don't want to stand out as the fat person. I dont disagree with welles here, hes spot on with the research funding and that the advertising class should be blamed , i just think he is missing a few aspects of this epidemic going on.

      @@andreweff1284 I get where you’re coming from for sure, but I feel like that would be a crazy amount of irony, like, a confusing amount of irony. He says in the non chorus parts of the song that it’s “not like an evil scientist” something about making super unhealthy food, yk? And while this COULD be supposed to be taken literally, I find it kind of hard to believe. Especially since he mentions “critters and chemicals” which are both used in making processed food. Also, with the doctor thing, he mentions it’s grandpappy, which leads me to believe he may be referring to how in the 30s-50s some cigarettes were “doctor approved” hence, “I guess he bought the wrong pack” anyway, I could be wrong of course, and you’re not even replying to me in the first place, just wanted to share my opinion.
      I mean, all that being said, it’s important to try to make better decisions for your health, I think he’s just, as another commenter said, pointing out the irony that when the system creates an unhealthy environment that promotes addiction, the people shouldn’t turn on each other and blame the people who get addicted. You feel?

    • @andreweff1284
      @andreweff1284 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Bepipen that was a really well-articulated comment and I partially agree with your points.
      *HOWEVER* if you would, let me put this up for your consideration: all of the unhealthy consumer products mentioned in the song, are generally available across the US to all 340 million (approximated) people living here...yet we can adequately state that not all 340 million people are fat and/or suffering from black lung. That presumes one of two main consumer outcomes: 1) not all people are using these unhealthy products, or 2) all 340 million people ARE using said products, but are NOT being affected the same by them.
      It makes much more sense to me that instance 1) is being assumed in the song, rather than instance 2). Anyway, thanks for sharing your perspective in an intelligent, well-thought-out way. 🤙

      @henryflath8124 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      💯
      You get it completely. The intended message was obvious as soon as I heard the lyric about the scientists, chemicals, rigorous testing. I think the verse referring to grandpappys smoking could be confusing people. I am assuming most people don't know much of the history between the tobacco industry, American Medical industry and their role in the rise of our country. America was built on tobacco and for a very long time it wasn't just dr approved but medically prescribed as a cure for a list of ailments. I don't think much was ever said publicly or better put, Allowed to be said publicly untill the 60s or 70s. I'm not certain on those exact dates but that's irrelevant. Point is you are correct his reference of tobacco use and the now elderly generation keeps pace witb the same sarcastic undertone of the rest of the song.
      In defense of some of the negative comments I can say that if I did not know that bit of history and thought people always knew cigarettes were bad for you then that lyric could easily have given me the impression that the song is about personal responsibility instead of the intended exposure of corporate injustices. Again I am 100% certain this song is in defence of people suffering from the mentioned diseases/afflictions by spreading awareness to the facts that these large corporations are intentionally making their products extremely addictive.
      The fact that Addiction is now medically classified as a physical disease that can permanently alters brain function in such a way that the addictive substance becomes hardwired into your central cortex while weakening the connections to the frontal cortex. To simplify that a little after a varied period of regular use your brain puts the addictive substance (whatever it may be) into the same part of your brain that tells you your thirsty or hungry. You don't think about being thirsty but if you go long enough without drinking anything your brain makes damn sure your body knows it needs water to survive. It's hard to imagine unless youve experienced it but your brain starts doing the same thing for a chemical it has become addicted to and over time this subconscious survival instinct gets stronger and at the same time this portion of your brains connection to the reasoning/thinking section of your brain that says we'll actually we don't need this to survive infact it's bad gets weaker and eventually severed so bad that your brain demands the addictive substance and will go absolutly haywire without it the same as it would if you tried to intentionally deny it oxygen. You cant hold your breath untill you die because your brain will take control despite your every intention to deny it. Replace oxygen with heroin in that scenario. Try as hard as you can to deny your brain something it's been convinced it needs to live and it goes into survival mode where it will very literally and physically make you suffer in unimaginable ways untill you give it what it needs.
      I Apologize for going deep into that small peice of my originally intended comment but what better place to try and spread awareness than in the comments on video of a song about awareness.

      Except in America, the additives really will kill you, slowly and brutally through cancer. They only get to fly through standards here because our government agencies are corrupt and allow corporations to literally write their own rules and regulations.

    I show Jesse to my conservative friends and they don't like him because they think he's liberal, and my liberal friends don't like him because they think he's conservative

      Wait, what are you gonna tell me next, the Colbert Report was satire?? That Ron Swanson supposed to be a caricature?? That I'm not supposed to stan Walt from Breaking Bad, but be horrified that I'm identifying with him??? Say it ain't so 😮😮😮
