I had thought all the best irish ballad singers had passed away untill I came across Ger yesterday for the first time and have been listening to him for hours now just supperb 👏👏👏👏👏
This song reminds me of the movie, The Long Gray Line. It was one of Dad's favorites and tells the story of Mary O'Donnell meeting her Galant Soldier at West Point and their lives together. It would be interesting to know if the writers had watched the movie before composing the song. Best version out there.
Come all you lads of high renown That would hear of a fair young maiden And she roved out on a summer’s day For to view the soldiers parading They marched so bold and they looked so gay Their colours flying and the bands did play And it caused young Mary for to say “I’ll wed you me my gallant soldier” She viewed the soldiers on parade And as they stood at their leisure And Mary to herself did say: “At last I’ve found my treasure But oh how cruel my parents must be To banish my true love away from me Well I’ll leave them all and I’ll go with thee My bold undaunted soldier” “Oh Mary dear, your parents’ love I pray don’t be unruly For when you’re in a foreign land, Believe me you’ll rue it surely Perhaps in battle I might fall From a shot from an angry cannonball And you so far from your daddy’s hall Be advised by a gallant soldier.” “Oh I have fifty guineas in bright gold, Likewise a heart that’s bolder And I’d leave them all and I’ll go with you My bold undaunted soldier So don’t say no but let me go And I will face the daring foe And we’ll march together to and fro And I’ll wed you, my gallant soldier” And when he saw her loyalty And Mary so true-hearted He said: “My darling, married we’ll be And nothing but death will part us And when we’re in a foreign land I’ll guard you, darling, with my right hand In hopes that God might stand a friend To Mary and her gallant soldier”
Here's how it works. I find videos I want to watch and add them to the Watch Later list on TH-cam. Once watched, I delete them. This one has been banging around my Watch Later for several weeks. Every time it makes it back to the top of the list I get to listen to it again, and again.
This is a great sounding rendition of an Irish classic. Dropped tuning to make an open G chord on the guitar? What is the rythmic beat of this master piece. It's not 4/4...Thanks for sharing!
I believe he’s playing in DGDGBD. He takes a beat of rest in between phrases of the first and second lines. So it comes out to (divided by line) 5 4 5 4 5 5 4 3 (last beat picks up into riff) That said, I found it more useful to just learn the sounds of the recording. It never occurred to me that this was the pattern bc I internalized the recording. Hope that makes sense!
@@JesseBlueEads yup, that counts out well. For some reason I always forget about the 'extra beat' motif in trad and folk, it's not the same as 5/4 as I said above, that's wrong.
wow, don't know who this guy is, but he's fabulous. I like the guitar playing, my only nitpick (which seems absurd given how good he is) would be a vote for more subtlety and inflection in the voice - everything is so forceful, sort of overpowering.
Brilliant version. Paul Brady would be very proud of you. Great full sound 👌

Bravo!! Una de las más emblemáticas canciones de Paul Brady, magníficamente intrepretada.
Qué placer para los oídos !! Thanks you!!
His version of the fox song with the petersons is amazing too. Love this guy
Perfect version of this lovely song. Very dynamic playing and saying. Fantastic!
This is brilliant Ger. Your Irish trad performances are the best :).
Magnifico. Una excelente version de un gran tema.
This guy makes the song look like child’s play. Bravo!

Best version out there.
My biggest regret with this recording is that I haven't heard it sooner! Well done.
I’ve heard a lot of beautiful versions of this song but nothing like this. This is true my amazing
I love the punch you put in this interpretation. One of my favourite songs and you Mickey Mantled it out of the park.
Very very impressed. As fine and as complete a performance as I have seen for some considerable time - excellent.
An absolutely wonderful rendition! So much taste and skill in that guitar playing and what a great, powerful voice. Thank you!
WOW... Ger, this is THE best version of Mary and the Soldier I have ever heard. Absolutely beautiful. Well done!
Me too
Absolutely fantastic. Impressive picking and a beautiful voice. 👍🏻
A glorious version of a gorgeous song….love it.
I play this for my friends when they come over. Incredible!
Aww thanks!
Is this in Open G? Or Dadgad ., TIA ….

And Mary to herself did say:
“At last I’ve found my treasure
But oh how cruel my parents must be
To banish my true love away from me
Well I’ll leave them all and I’ll go with thee
My bold undaunted soldier”
“Oh Mary dear, your parents’ love
I pray don’t be unruly
For when you’re in a foreign land,
Believe me you’ll rue it surely
Perhaps in battle I might fall
From a shot from an angry cannonball
And you so far from your daddy’s hall
Be advised by a gallant soldier.”
“Oh I have fifty guineas in bright gold,
Likewise a heart that’s bolder
And I’d leave them all and I’ll go with you
My bold undaunted soldier
So don’t say no but let me go
And I will face the daring foe
And we’ll march together to and fro
And I’ll wed you, my gallant soldier”
And when he saw her loyalty
And Mary so true-hearted
He said: “My darling, married we’ll be
And nothing but death will part us
And when we’re in a foreign land
I’ll guard you, darling, with my right hand
In hopes that God might stand a friend
To Mary and her gallant soldier”
Great - best version I’ve heard. :-)
Well done Thanks for sharing 🎶❣️😎
Great Version!!
Wonderful, beautiful guitar playing, great voice is that bunratty castle
it is indeed!
Wow, beautiful song. Incredibly well sung.
Love his voice
I'm in awe.... Oh... and in need of those Tabs! ^^
Awesome version! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Beautiful
Ger this is even better than the Master Brady's own version, far more powerful, granted he did write it so credit due, love it mate
Paul Brady didnt write it, its a traditional song
Ah nothing would touch Paul Brady, I just enjoy playing it!
Outstanding Ger, even better than the original
Bravo!

Many thanks John
beautiful!!!!
Brilliant!
Brilliant
Brilliant.❤
Great Job, really enjoyed that.
Superb.
Lovely rendition of a Paul Brady number.🎶
Good performance, but strange recording choice. Every time you move the stereo image shifts between left and right channels
I've a Louden .Why doesnt it sound like that! No daylight between Ger and Paul Brady
Great version! Is this in the main hall at Banratty castle? I thought I recognised it.
This guy is good!
¡Qué voz tan maravillosa!
What a wonderful voice!
I'd Lover to hear Ger sing 'Early Morning Rain'.
Whoa! 👌😀
Bravissimo.
Great job dude

I'm struggling with that too, but I *think* it alternates 5/4 and 4/4 in the verses, and possibly reverting to 4/4 in between. But I'm still not sure.

Ireland my man, Ireland. The lush green hills and dales of Ireland. Yes?
incredible
What's your guitar tuned in ?? Fantastic cover man !
Open G tuning, cheers!
I’m burning my guitar
Hey Ger! Great song. What is the tuning you're using? Open G perhaps?
Exactly! Cheers Jason
What is that tuning??
Dingoniner I asked the same question and after some research I believe it’s open G. Hoping to noodle around with it soon.
Update...definitely open G. Now to figure out the fingering!

What tuning is this...doesn't seem standard.
DADGAd
brilliant. that's all.
sweet!
lovely - almost as good as Brady, Irvine and Lunny!
High praise, many thanks!
As good as it's gets
I take it it’s in open G any body have the chords for this great song please
County Antrim baj
Ott
You’re not going to do better than that. Wow
Too fast, you dont have to play so fast.
He does because he can 😅
