Yesterday I was wrestling with my religious view of God vs. the true nature God. I've lived with a works-based, "scary" God in my mind my entire life. Then yesterday through a counseling session He brought this song to my mind and played it on repeat. Thank you Jesus. And thank you, Jon, for making this beautiful musical version of Psalm 23.
I was running errands in my car, flipping through music stations, chaffing against synthetic sounds, drum machines, and over-processed vocals; then this song reached my ears--caressed my spirit--and made me long for a closer relationship with Jesus.

Right after I found out I was pregnant for the first time, this song brought so much peace. I was confused and scared and overwhelmed. I used to listen to this on repeat during my hour-long commute to work each morning. Nothing else could calm me like this.

I'm going to have this song played at my wedding with the woman that I'm standing next to in my profile picture. “For husbands, this means love your wives, just as Christ loved the church. He gave up his life for her." Ephesians 5:25.

Dear Jon Foreman, My name is Jonathan Shafe and I am fifteen years old. I discovered your music just recently and fell in love with it. For the first time I heard interesting original melodies and honest lyrics from a Christian perspective--something I had been searching for, for a long time. For awhile now I have been interested in the music industry but have been unable to find any helpful information concerning it. My parents are missionaries in West Africa and I can appreciate so much what you sing about, from my own experiences and life. Music has an effect on people in way that I will never be able to completely understand. I know this is a lot to ask, but could you answer the following questions? 1. How long has your occupation been that of a musical artist? 2. What other occupations have you worked in previously? 3.Do you primarily work with people, things, or ideas? 4. What do you like most about your job? 5. How did you get started as a musical artist? 6. What personal qualities do you feel are needed to succeed as an artist? 7. What type of training is needed for this occupation today? 8. What changes in your job (music-industry-wise) have you seen occur? 9. What are the most frequently recurring problems on your job? 10. Do you have any long-term career goals? 11. Does your job require primarily independent activity or is there a lot of teamwork? 12. Who evaluates your performance and how does that actually take place? 13. Can experience be substituted for formal education credentials? 14. What would you say are the rewards of your position? 15. What hours do you usually work as an artist? Do you find you have free time or is there always a deadline and no flexibility? 16. What types of opportunities for growth and advancement are there as an artist? 17. What would you say is your least favorite thing about being a musical artist? 18. What advise would you give to a person who feels like a career as an artist is what God made them to do, but doesn't know how they should pursue it? I appreciate you taking the time to answer this questions very much and just know that it means a lot to me. Keep seeking God and don't ever give up! Know that it's worth the pain and the struggle you touch more lives than you could ever imagine. Sincerely, Jonathan
Hey man, all "Christian" music can have it's place and value (though some of it is decidedly of greater value than other and I wholeheartedly agree with John that using the word Christian as a label for things is problematic and generally counter productive), but if you're looking for more excellent music written by Christian artists which falls outside the usual realms of hymns, formulaic "praise and worship," and the CCM stuff that's basically "Christian" pop music, then you should also check out the bands Water Deep and Six Pence None the Richer, the music of Josh Bales, Keith Green (some one John lists as one of his influences), Don Francisco, Mark Heard, Randy Stonehill (Wonderama is my favorite album of his), and the poetic sung theology lessons of Michael Card.

A Casa De Deus Para Sempre
Deus é o meu pastor
Nada me faltará, nada me faltará
Ele me faz descansar
Em verdes campos
Com rios tranquilos
Mesmo que eu ande pelo vale da morte e do morrer
Eu não temerei
Porque Tu estás comigo
Tu estás comigo
Teu cajado me consola
Tu és meu banquete
Na presença de meus inimigos
Certamente que a bondade
Me seguirá, me seguirá
Na casa de Deus para sempre
Deus é o meu pastor
Nada me faltará
Nada me faltará
Ele me faz descansar
Em verdes campos
Como águas tranquilas
Mesmo que eu ande pelo vale da morte e do morrer
Eu não temerei
Porque Tu estás comigo
Tu estás comigo
Teu cajado me consola
Tu és meu banquete
Na presença de meus inimigos
