Nice video KRAZEEIZATION. I purchased a Pioneer RG-2 expander on 6-2-1981 for $130 and use it to this day (37 years). It really makes a difference on tapes and does add to all other sources. My RG-2 has never needed repairs and is used whenever the hifi is on. You mention below that a good amp set flat thru good speakers and source material should sound right. Not entirely so. Due to problems such as standing waves and room nodes, a good expander and equalizer might be necessary to make your system "sound just right". With my RG-2, I use an ADC Sound Shaper Two IC (purchased 3-16-1982 for $213). I have used a Pioneer SG-9500 EQ but find the Sound Shaper more flexible. Neither my EQ or expander have ever needed repair. The Pioneer EX-9000 does look quite impressive, I've never seen one in action. Thanks for sharing.
they are past due for a recap. you may think they don't need it but they do. the adc has many electrolytics in the audio path and they dull the sound as they age.i use an adc ss thirty myself
@@josephlalock8378- thanks for the recap advice. I have a reliable audio restoration guy, he maintains my vintage gear as needed. I like the flexibility of the twelve bands per channel of my SS2IC. For LP's the (18dB/oct @15Hz) subsonic filter is essential. On your SS30, what is the function of the Display Controls... 0-10 knob and 10dB, 20dB and 30dB knob??? The spectrum analyzer is like having your own mini Joshua Light Show.
@@oldjarhead386- a marvelously lucid comment. Ain't never had the title "audiophile" neither. I'm more of an Audio Enthusiast. While helping friends/family audio shop during the 1970's it was amazing how many people liked boom, sizzle and distortion. Damn straight, no accounting for taste. That's their preference. A favorite 1970's audio publication of mine is The Complete Buyers Guide to Stereo/Hifi Equipment. Soooo many educational articles. Where I first read about room effects on audio systems (standing waves, room nodes). If anyone's serious about hifi, it's way more complicated than buying stuff, dragging it home on the subway and plopping it down in your digs. Got my first "component" hifi system in 1975, after military service and broke. It consisted of a Pioneer SX-434 receiver, BIC-920 turntable and KLH model 31 speakers, all for under $250. It sounded boss.
I remember those back in the days. I just never got into them. I suppose my 20 band realistic EQ done the job. For added bass i used the realistic bass enhancer that made my classic JBL 4350 bump like there's no tomorrow. Those were huge speakers that i had in my family room.
I'd love a good Pioneer graphic. The Expander does have it's downside, the kind of 'breathing' like dbx NR is present. They are a novelty I guess that look cool. A good amp set flat through good speakers with a good source should sound just right!
KRAZEEIZATION Yeah Pioneer had made some awesome systems back in the days and not too bad today. They are more focus on the home theater units. They do have a 2 channel receiver but not sure how good it is?. I still have a older {1997} Pioneer receiver 100x100 which were popular back then. There was once this electronic store here called "Incredible Universe" which was a awesome store that had everything in audio and music. They were still selling Laser disc also with karokee. At that time i bought my Pioneer receiver,pioneer cd changer {25} disc,audio source 20 band eq,Pioneer dual cassette deck,and a pair of BOSE 301 series 4 which i have all of these units including the Bose in nice working condition. I currently stored them for my new mancave i built a few years ago.
totally diferent dbx is more then a plug and play like the dynamic expander from pioneer, you can connect it to your sound system and use it, dbx you have to use proper recordings,at the time vynil but a few lp´s were released and not so cheap , i think you can search on you tube for a dbx demontration.and if you set your amplifier flat, why do you need a dynamic expander, as the name says it´s an expander not an equalizer(to expand your system on those frequencies and that´s not all ,there are other options on this component, and one thing they are not is a novelty ,is more like a old pioneer component not very sold, but yet interesting ,for those who think their system is in need of more dynamic sound,or not so flat.
will this display show anything if its not connected to any other components? saw one today at the thrift when i plugged it in some stuff lit up on the right side but nothing on the display screen so i decided to pass up on it?
The nature of an expander is to add dynamics to a source, for instance a cassette deck, where you lose some frequencies with Dolby etc, you wouldn’t need it on FM radio or CD as the frequencies are higher. If you send your email address in a private message I will send you a photo of the back of the unit. You have expander in/out and Tape in/out rec/play so it’s four channels in all. Hope this helps it’s pretty simple really. I was going to sell mine but it was only €30 so I’ll keep onto it. Regards

Only 2 in and outs! The tape monitoring is for recording. The other for expander effecting what ever init you plug into it!
