A quick update on the the follow-up Yoshino video: it's taking longer to pull together than I thought. It's very clear that the Yoshino battery isn't an "all solid state battery," but I've gone down a rabbit hole of "but what is it?" It's been a fascinating and interesting journey going down this path (no, it's not your standard lithium ion battery as some are saying). I've been talking to experts in the field (like the CTO of QuantumScape and others about solid state in general), working with TechInsights to dig further into some gaps in their initial Yoshino testing, getting additional information from Yoshino itself, as well as working with a fellow TH-camr and friend that has access to university lab to do his own Yoshino analysis. The video is 100% happening, but the investigation keeps revealing new interesting layers to the discussion. Stay tuned.

I’m still dubious of many of these tear down videos. There’s still a bunch of misunderstanding around how to verify the solid state claims. There’s more to it than simply sticking a drill through it. Hoping I can bring a lot more detail with the tear downs I’m pulling together. No matter what comes out of it, should be super interesting.

Unlisting and linking the original is great. You get the full value plus the update's value in this video, and the unlisted video now won't show up in the algorithm and deceive people, while it's still available for the sceptics to go through, but they have to go through this video first so they better come with points that aren't already raised.
I'm looking forward to the part 2, and I think this should be the golden standard of 'partially retracting a video which still has value'. Unlist the original. Update part 1 and link to the original, then work on a part 2. It leaves no uncertainty during the investigation.

If you want a "light and dense" camping battery, the way to go is a 24V LFP. Many if not most things that can plug into a 12V cigarette lighter port are now designed to also work at 24V. 24V carries the power out more efficiently than 12V on the same wiring. Then you leave the power inverter at home.
Say you hook up my portable fridge. AC power is measured at 73W when running. DC 24V seems to be ~60W. Average DC draw is ~30W on 24V as in I calculate this number against the Wh rating of the battery to get total estimated run time on battery. So DC you cut out the conversion loss of say 10% and parasitic draw of say 5W to go from 24V DC to AC, you dump the inverter overboard all together, and you get rid of the conversation loss in the fridge from 115V AC back to 24V DC of ~20%. You may lose on average ~40% of your power between conversion loses and parasitic draw of the inverter, which is now all dumped overboard. Now say it just goes straight 24V DC from the battery to the fridge. There is a 0.5V drop from the battery to the fridge while running over the long DC cable that comes with the fridge. With 12V, you have a 1V drop and twice the current. So you go from a ~2% transmission loss to an 8% transmission loss going from 24V to 12V. So AC conversion ~40% loss. 12V is ~8% loss to go from battery to fridge. With 24V it is a ~2% loss to go from battery to fridge. 24V DC battery is the winner here.
Now what else do you want to power on your camping trip?
    1. USB - USB chargers are available that very efficiently take 24V power and buck it down to your device voltage. For PD, the output voltage is typically 20V, so a DC-DC buck conversation from say 26V of an LFP battery to 20V is about the most efficient thing you can possibly do. Nearly 100% efficient. So again a 24V battery wins.
    2. Dedicated laptop charger - Say you have a laptop with a dedicated power plug, not USB-C PD. A standard Dell power supply for example is 19.5V. Again going from ~26V of an LFP battery to 19.5V through a simple buck conversion on a buck-boost converter is about the most efficient thing you can possibly do. Nearly 100% efficient. They make a variety of these and ones that are "universal", so pretty much any laptop can be powered this way even if you don't do USB-C PD charging or it kind of sucks on your particular laptop model.
    3. Starlink Mini - This can take a 100W USB-C PD power supply. Again 20V. So a 24V LFP battery to do this primarily doing a buck conversion (maybe use a voltage stabilizer) is the most efficient thing you can do.
4, Cell booster - They make these that can plug into a cigarette lighter port. I am sure you can find one with a power supply rated for a 24V LFP battery.
    5. Cooking - Use a propane stove. Job done. No electricity needed. Anyways, bringing an electric hot plate or microwave oven is a lot more crap to lug around. Just bring a propane stove and call it a day. And you know for hot coffee, you could just boil hot water on the propane stove. This process does work without your electric espresso machine.
    6. Lighting - USB charged lights. No AC power needed. Why would you fuss with a propane or white gas lantern? I mean an LED light you just press the button and it turns on and off. And why would you bring an AC lamp or something with you? You are camping here, right?
Really, what are you bringing an AC inverter on a camping trip for? Just dump the inverter overboard and then you have "light and dense". Certainly lighter and denser than any of these portable power stations.

This is especially important because of the potentially inaccurate safety claims the company makes, which you don't even note in this update.

My biggest problem isn't that there might have been small mistakes in the video. My biggest problem is that we keep constantly, repeatedly, and clearly, hearing from you, that these new breakthrough battery technologies from the future that will revolutionize everything... are 2x or 3x battery density or charge/discharge speed. A 20% (or whatever) increase isn't revolutionary or a breakthrough. It's marginal improvements over existing products, and that's progress, sure. But it's just not what was promised by these companies and especially not by all your previous videos.
When we ask to see these revolutionary breakthroughs from the future, we want a 2x 3x 4x battery capacity on the same weight, or a battery with the same capacity that's 50%, 40%, 30% the weight of their competitors. That's what you keep alluding to, and we're still waiting for.

    • @roots4x
      @roots4x 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

First off, I think this sounds suspiciously like a huge ad. That's very disappointing.
Secondly, you can't expect a first iteration product of anything to perform as well as the most mature and final iterations of the last gen product. THat's not how things work. First iteration stuff is sometimes even just on par with the previous gen products. If you compare the larger battery pack, there is substantial weight savings. Now that mass production is in full swing, there will be rapid advancements. Patience is not a virtue that people seem to even pretend to have anymore.
Regardless, this still seems like a huge ad and is very disappointing. I know he said he has no association, but something seems fishy.

I mean, the thing is we're not going to hit that sort of thing instantly. Like, battery tech multiple times better than it was 10 years ago, and orders of magnitude better 20. Since a lot of the individual components of a battery could be optimized or replaced, you're only going to see very slightly improvements year over years, that add up to batteries being that much better. But if you compare batteries that came out close together, they're going to be close in performance.

    • @eslachance
      @eslachance 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Ok sure but how many times have we heard outlandish claims and the only barrier to production was "scaling up"? I don't want a 10% increase in capacity - you can probably get this by offsetting a battery with lighter materials around it. I'm still waiting for the dozen 2x 3x capacity that we're waiting to come out of factories. Until then, I don't see the point. It's certainly not "revolutionary" in any way.

@@eslachance Chill bro. Not sure how old you are but remember first gen Li-ion batteries? They were markedly better but nowhere near as good as they are now. The tech will mature. @@roots4x I'm chill, man. I'm not saying improvements are bad. I'm just relating that Matt is really quick on the "revolution" and "future", and has been taking about these batteries for years, and like I said, has clearly stated throughout these years that the biggest thing preventing commercial products was mass production and costs.
These Yoshino packs aren't much better, and they're not much more expensive, and my only point is that they are only a marginal improvement. It's an opinion, man, and I'm expressing it. If you don't like reading contrary opinions, it's also within your power not to read them.

I’m glad to hear that he delisted the old video. While caveating the original claims is a good start, I am still disappointed that he focuses only on whether the company made misleading claims, but does not take any responsibility for his role in spreading them. This is claimed to be a first-to-market product from an unknown company that registered itself only two years ago. Claims made by an established brand with a reputation should invite a healthy scrutiny, but claims from a new brand with no reputation-let alone one with revolutionary claims-should be met with much greater scrutiny.
When a content creator gains a significant following, I believe there is a responsibility to prevent the spread of misinformation and do at least some due diligence before presenting products that may be seen by millions. This doesn’t necessarily mean that he should’ve torn down and tested the product himself, but it should at a bare minimum include researching if claims have been independently vetted and verified, and if they have not, to simply present them as unverified claims. I hope this experience informs the way in which he presents technology in the future, and in the future investigation video he is willing to be transparent and acknowledge his mistake.

There is absolutely no chance that a no-name NMC-based battery is going to last 4000 cycles or anywhere close to as long its LFP counterparts, regardless of its (probably not) solid-state electrolyte. My guess is that this battery is a semi-solid-state battery, which doesn't have the core benefits of the all-solid-state batteries we keep hearing about. Even if they are telling the truth about the battery chemistry, they are 100% lying about the longevity of the product, which should take away any credibility they have for the rest of the spec sheet.

Especially when their product doesn't have the cell spec sheets to go with it and the specs of the finished unit is worse than other units using conventional cells. It was also a company with zero track record.
Now with other youtubers doing digging, this is yet another Chinese company (using a California warehouse address) selling a product with a cell with liquid electrolytes/solvents (so not solid state).
I hope next time before doing a similar review, you will either do your own teardown or wait for others to do a teardown to confirm what cells are actually in it. It's ok to make a mistake if you learn from it.

Thanks Matt for doing this UPDATE, and providing transparency into what is known, for the Undecided community.
It would be nice to have more clarification on what the battery industry considers "solid state". My understanding that solid state is just a reference to the electrolyte used in manufacturing the cells, which is a gel, or a dry paste. This is said to improve assembly efficiency in manufacturing. If there is not an industry conscientious, that would also be good info.
As far as cell energy storage capacity, it is my understanding it is determined by the storage capacity of the anode and cathode materials. Storage capacity of anode and cathode need to be similar, otherwise the higher capacity material is limited by the lower capacity material.
Matt, it would be helpful to touch on how all 3 components (anode, cathode and electrolyte) effect cell capacity. For example, if a dry paste electrolyte takes up less cell volume, then the surface area of a given volume cell can have more cell layers, thus more surface area. (ie: increase capacity).
The other area of interest is "solid state" cells are suppose to have much higher cycle life (full charge/discharge cycle counts), as the thick gel, or solid paste type of electrolyte is suppose to stop hair-like dendrites from growing between the anode and cathode. This is harder to verify, as it requires putting multiple cells through an endurance test to measure how cell capacity decreases over time, under different temperature conditions. (cold, near room temperature, and warm)

I think it originally said it was a hybrid solid state, and my guess on that was that it just used less liquid electrolytes, but i was still hopeful it would be different, which is why i didnt say anything negative on the original video.
My problem has been that it still uses nickle and cobalt which until we have testing on this differetn formulation, we'll have to assume the similar 500-1000 cycle rating as other NMC batteries, as opposed to the 2000-6000 cycles of LiFePO4.
Now that others have torn them apart, it doesnt look like it has that much less electrolyte either but I'd still like to see more testing.

      @BrendanBurwood 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

For orbital (ie., longer than 5 minutes!) space tourism, the only options right now for "a zero-g weekend" are Dragon & Soyuz. New Shepard & Virgin Galactic are simply 10 minute hops total, & basically straight up & straight down again, barely touching the Karman line. (or not even touching for Virgin Galactic) Dragon & Soyuz will set you back US$50-90 Million a seat, so not really an option for even remotely close to a regular person. Sierra Nevada's Dream Chaser crew version will also be in this category when it comes online probably late in the decade (for crew - cargo version is due for first launch in the coming months).
SpaceX's Starship is the only thing in development that has any hope of getting anywhere near "regular person" holiday price range. It's another economy of scale thing - most will be very surprised how big it is when they see the eventual cabin tour videos. (more volume than an ENTIRE 747 pressurised fuselage volume!) They MAY eventually get ticket prices for short flights down to the low 6 figure range - cheaper than both New Shepard & Virgin Galactic, but for a couple of days fully orbital. Nothing else I'm aware of in development comes remotely close to Starship's longer term price possibilities.
You might want to follow the Polaris Program, lead by Jared Isaacman, partnering with SpaceX. First flight (on Dragon) is coming up soon (currently late this month [26 August 2024]), called "Polaris Dawn." They will be doing the very first commercial spacewalk. Flight 3 is aiming to be the very first Starship only crewed mission - launch to landing - though that will likely be a couple of years away. After Polaris flight 3 is when the fun really begins for space tourism! (& the commercial space future in general, that all of us scifi fans have been waiting decades for)

@@drillerdev4624 No probs, & yup, I've been following SpaceX since the Falcon 1 days (still kicking myself for not going outside 1 hour after the first Falcon 9 launch - would have been a specatular sight [large glowing spiral plume in the pre-dawn sky], & even made the news). SpaceX has been the first company in my near 5 decades that has the promise (& leadership drive & ambition) to begin delivering the scifi future we've been promised for decades since Apollo times. Their success has also paved the way for several other companies with great prospects too - Rocket Lab, Firefly, Relativity, Stoke, Astra among others. (Still waiting on Blue Origin to actually send a gram to orbit before I get excited about them again!)

myself when looking for a battery I am looking for something that can power my computers for an hr or two (3 about 3 year old full sized computers) I already have something backups for my medical equipment that will work for 3 days+ but that is also a 5 year old system that still works fine.

How does the cycle life compare to LFP including tolerance to deep depth of discharge?
How does peak power compare as well for LFP of the same size?

The battery cells have text and a QR code that identifies them as LIPO batteries. The company's own web site has a graphic that shows the batteries are not solid state. The other TH-camrs that did tear downs all concluded that they they are regular old LIPO batteries. They cost as much as other LIPO batteries. They have the same performance and specs. They burst into flames if exposed to air like LIPO batteries. Is any of this conclusive enough for you?

I almost bought this based on your original video. Glad i didnt.
While I'm glad you're updating and correcting, hopefully there's a lesson here for someone with your size of platform and the reach/influence you have. With such an outstanding claim like solid state, it was lazy to not do this research and legwork before initial publication.
Regardless, you're doing the right thing now and that deserves praise, so thank you.

This has happened so many times for decades. New technology with high potentials around the corner. Companies doing their R&D are timid to go public. Then a company drops news they are selling. Turns out it's a scam! But the company selling the scam (unknown at the time), finally encourages those in R&D, to go public. The hero no one wanted.

Great post Matt. I appreciate the update and look forward to your next post. On the surface it appears the solid state claim is a stretch at best. I’ve heard this product more accurately referred to as a semi solid state or hybrid battery. Either way, introducing your company and product with misleading information is a really bad idea.

👍 I agree with your statement. If it turns out this is a semi/quasi solid state of some kind, it's going against what the public thinks/knows of solid state (that's a problem). I'm keeping an open mind until I see the lab results from my friend.

This is a great way of doing it. The only thing I would say is change the thumbnail to say or indicate some way that it's a re-upload. TH-cam kept recommending it to me and I'm like stop showing me some thing I've already seen. But then I saw the other video so it popped up again I thought well maybe double check.
Yeah original video goes unlisted and update the description then new video goes up I think that's the way to do it. As the original video was pretty good apart from the information that needed to change. And I want to support a reupload with good views but need to know that it's a re-upload to click on it.

At the current state of solid-state technology, no mass-produced battery is completely liquid free. Some residual binding fluid, composing less than 5-10% of the total battery’s volume, remains as a result of the manufacturing process.

The most important question for the end consumer is not if the battery is solid state or not.
It is the observable and repeated difference in the performance of the system. As compared to what has been historically available in the market.
As of this moment, from what I have seen. A real world comparison between Yoshino and others has not yet happened.

On a more positive note, Samsung just started delivering their first round of Solid state batteries to an undisclosed car manufacturer, currently the Samsung battery is at 500Wh/kg at the pack level.
Their pilot production line is already up and running, and they expect to be in full mass production by 2026.
Do have a look at that one!

Good stuff. You don't just want ion energy density, you want rapid rechargeability to maintain work/time. A muscle ion processes tends to be stronger than a electric motor of the same mass, because it can continuously restore potential, while diffusing energy, therefore ion gradient energy density is a narrow focus, because the goal is work/time. Because you don't need (1 type of energy density) not to just have all the energy density in the form of (ion gradient energy density) considering work/time, because there is a voltage to consider in terms of the appliances being run, it's enough to have faster rechargeability, and chemical potential energy density, rather than high ion gradient potential energy density. Because a battery is not meant to diffuse it's power all at once, therefore high ion energy density potential is irrelevant and not practical, it's a error in measure of a batteries capability, because that's not what batteries job is, rather work/time is a batteries job. There are other energy densities that can be stored. Biological systems have many types of energy density storage, these energy densities are one a type of conveyer belt that resources the ion potential progressively as charge is diffused. It needs to be like a piston, cycle around from potential to release potential to release, where the oxygen and gas in the motor is not a total measure of the potential of the motor, but rather there is a gas tank that is not being considered. It's about the non-frictionless transfer between multiple types of energy density, and the efficiency, and sustainability of tech without pollution or drudging up the sea beds, or slave labor in Africa for rare earth metals, and it's about progressing science and engineering past the community of peers one eyed cyclops mode nonsense.

There are many misconceptions of what “solid-state” actually means. Yoshino adheres to the commonly accepted scientific definition that a solid-state battery is one that uses a solid electrolyte in place of liquid or gel electrolyte found in traditional lithium batteries.
