Een van mijn eerste actieve herinneringen aan een sportwedstrijd 🥹. Sliep in het weekend altijd bij mijn opa & oma, en was samen met hem de herhaling aan het kijken op maandagochtend (ook al was het zomervakantie, zondagavond live was toch echt te laat, helaas). Kan me weinig specifieke momenten van de wedstrijd zelf herinneren, behalve natuurlijk het einde met de flabbergasted Alberda met al die juichende/treurende spelers op het veld. Iconische beelden die sindsdien honderden keren herhaald zijn. Ik denk dat, zelfs anno 2024, veel mensen van 1990 en ouder nog wel minstens 5 spelers van dit team kan opnoemen. Gelukkig is Giani onlangs in Parijs toch nog Olympisch kampioen geworden! Persoonlijk dus erg leuk dat een dierbare herinnering gepaard gaat met deze legendarische wedstrijd vast. Ik gun elk klein kind een zelfde soort herinnering. Misschien was 3x3 basketball in 2024 wat 1996 voor mij was 😇

The greatest thing about this match is that Italy was the best of the best in top form. To beat them in 5 sets after getting rid of a matchpoint was legendary
As Andrea Giani once put it the greatest disappointment was when Italy lost to The Netherlands at the Olympics in 1992... this was simply a great match where both teams deserved to win.

Perfect visible ball, not like nowadays. It was direct experience for screen fans. No ritual huggings, no VChS, slow motion replays rare. Now we have a dark age of volleyball.
Audio is out of sync and ahead of the image. It's extremely annoying when the commentator spoils every single point with his commentary! Or else he's a clairvoyant 😀
Er staat een antenne op het net aan beide kanten, boven de zijlijn. De bal moet binnen die twee antennes (en de denkbeeldige lijnen rechtomhoog) over het net heen. Dat gebeurde niet, dus NL won het punt
2:53 - I heb deze video vaak gezien, maar dit viel me deze keer pas op. Mijn gok is dat v/d Meulen in de "zone" is en niet gestoord wil worden. En een coach begrijpt dat. Niks negatiefs, dus.

You're precisely wrong. It doesn't matter who is best 364 days and 23 hours of the year. It matters who is best on that one decisive moment on that one decisive day.
Interestingly the Dutch commentator said (almost) exactly that: "Italië, dat moest winnen." ("Italy, that had to win.") But where the commentator meant that there was immense pressure on the Italian team to do so, I have the feeling that you mean that the Dutch victory was undeserved. Am I correct in that assumption? And if so, what makes you think so?
What a weird reasoning, because theyre now trash they should have been trash back then too? They were fucking amazing back then. in 92 they got silver....
