but but i wanna wear my HIM t-shirt that i totally don't listen to from time to time. (sarcasm here, i actually do know the band and own one or two of their older albums XD)
Ema Ajster the worst culprits are hipsters wearing the Joy Division's "unknown pleasures" album shirt because they saw it on tumblr and thought it looked cool 😒😒
I am dealing with a 13 year old daughter who is really attracted to the whole Goth scene. at first I was freaked out, but she is such a smart, well grounded girl and she came to me last week and ask if she could get some "scene gear" and makeup. So now I am an old guy trying to find out how to get her going the right way. I was firm on the NO body piercings other than the ears. When she is 18, she can get as many spikes and she wants. For now, that is off the table. I suppose just letting her find her own way and not be that "you must be a cheerleader and wear Gap clothing" parent is a good start. Channels like these, and you in particular, really help. Thanks.
omg thats so cool!! and yes, i might seems scary but goths are so Nice, Smart and educated, your girl Will be a great woman 💜 dont be afraid and keep searching info and share it with her 💜💜
Julieta RiotBatGrrl Yes, I am finding that the scene is very misrepresented in the media and the stereotypical Goth is nothing like I imagined. Just normal folks who want to express themselves in a way that is not mainstream. Oh, you find the odd bad apple in the barrel, but for the most part, it has been fun so far. We had to attend a funeral for a family member and she ask if she could dress how she wanted. Whew! The big reveal to the rest of my family, I was very nervous about how the others family would take it, and of course a few of my ultra conservative religious relatives had kittens, but that is all. For the most part, they all treated her like they always did.
owww this is so sweet of you! i hope she appreciate all this work! Im from Argentina and my parents Will never understand all of this. Send her big Kisses and hugs 💜
Julieta RiotBatGrrl Really? You are the first person I have ever talked to from that country. You speak very good English. Do you have a channel that you post to?
As someone who is gothic and doesn’t do makeup, I can understand the point of the fact that makeup is definitely a good thing to wear so it doesn’t look like your dressing up as a goth. There are goths who don’t do makeup, so it’s okay to not wear makeup. You do you, people! It’s okay to like different things and it’s okay to not wear makeup. Period :3
Oh my goodness, I'm so glad I found this comment because I've never been into makeup and I'm just a baby bat learning new things and I thought I had to start wearing makeup😭🥲
"If someone gives you a compliment say thank you." So much yes here! I've never thought of myself as goth, I tend to just settle for "alternative style" as a blanket, but I still get so many dirty looks and so much shade that any time I get an actual complement it's so refreshing I cant help but be genuinely thankful for it. On the other hand, I once told an extremely goth woman I liked her necklace and her exact response was "Did I tell you you could talk to me?" I guess even some goths mistake goth culture as meaning you have to be a nasty person.
TGTwitch Awh, I'm sorry about your experience. She sounds like a rude person, but people like that usually don't go far in life or just have a pretty sad one. And no one ever compliments me, - unless they're friends with me - sadly. I just get a lot of people telling me I look/act really weird or sketchy, but I guess that's better than being boring. :v
I get complimented on unexpected things and live almost rural. Lol. My spooky black cat purse about 50 times but it's my go to purse. Hate switching purses unless I use a fanny pack outdoors to be hands free. Have a black and punk rocker looking one that wraps around my leg too. Holds more junk. Lol
back before i was goth, when i was like nine i was at the mall and i saw this girl wearing giant ass platforms and just so much goth clothing, (definitely more nu goth, but it was my first goth impression) and i just became obsessed, i went up to her and told her that i liked her boots so much and she like almost started crying she looked so genuinely happy when she said thank you !!! ill never forget that moment aha
Idk with goths I've found that you don't necessarily have to stick to black and only black as long as you can play it right and make it work. Most of the time, the fabric or design, makes it look gothic even though it can be in a different colour but I've also found that not every clothes item that is black necessarily looks gothic. It all depends.
I agree there are plenty of wonderful colors that are very gothic like burgundy, dark reds, dark purples, dark blues...that is obviously more romantic. If were talking more steampunk, usually blacks, warm greys, browns, darker oranges are associated with it. It honestly just depends on what type of style you prefer more.
What you said. I like to play around with red, dark red, gray, purple, eggplant, amethyst, white and ivory. I've even been known to wear black and emerald green. It's actually quite stunning together.
I'm not Gothic, buy you remind me of my aunt. she had a baby and turned into one of those PTA mom's complete with the nice, blonde, hair colorful outfits, and super strict views on how you should live.... your videos remind me of when she was fun and nice to us.
This is so sad! I think I went crazy embracing myself right after I had my kid. Love him to pieces but I wanted to maintain my own identity instead of disappear and fade away into my momminess.
I met another goth at a bar and she thought it was funny her kids were embarrassed and like me , doesn't care. No age limit. So, normie kids can be just as bad to their elders. My boyfriends oldest daughter in her 20s doesn't like me. But she's a brat and won't put up with it so just ignore her and be polite if I bump into her. Who's she to talk? She dresses like she stole clothes from an old man but keep my mouth shut but my boyfriend even thinks so. Her house is almost like a hoarders with rabbits running around pooping and rarely cleaned. A few minutes and I was outta there. Can't be sanitary.
J Moore : Hoarding is unpleasant for everyone, including the hoarder (I speak from experience). Have you and/or your boyfriend looked into mental health resources available in your area that she could maybe be nudged towards?
I shop at Hot Topic for my goth clothes and at Goodwill. In my opinion you make the clothes goth so it doesn't really matter were you get your clothes.
I wish I could find “goth” stuff around me🥺 they don’t even sell black clothes tbh. It’s not like I can even wear anything in the rare black clothes they do have because they look SO normie, like black jeans, black woolly ass cardigans. Sadly I have to just get stuff online😔🤚🏻
I hope they don't think BVB are goth! Maybe the IDIOTS who are outside of any sort of alternative sub-culture do, but that's why they're idiots hahaha I think BVB is a rock band, what are some emo bands? I don't know any
veloSLAY raptor There are a ton of emo bands. A Vain Attempt, Dear Whoever, Pierce The Veil, Sleeping with Sirens, Escape The Fate, Falling In Reverse, etc. My sister and I both went through a brief emo stage, unfortunately.
Queen Nera I thought emo was short for emotive hardcore? Because I love PTV, SWS, and ETF and from what I understand they are not emotive hardcore bands. I've googled emotive hardcore bands, and though the sound is similar, it's a little different. Unless of course you are referring to the "emo" style of dressing, and those people liking SWS PTV and ETF, then that makes sense. And i think we all went through a emo/scene phase to get to where we are today :D
Queen Nera and those bands like sws ptv and etf are post-hardcore bands, and post-hardcore is kind of the father of emotional hardcore. I LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE yor profile picture by the way! You're so pretty and have an awesome style!!
I know, they just end up in the same category because of their fanbase. But thank you soo much.^..^ That's so sweet.! Are you goth as well, or just a fan of the style?
I think goth is a lot about creating your own style within the scene. Which means you know what the scene is about, the roots, the music, the basic style. But you should never forget to be unique. To create an own makeup style, listen to the bands you like and do whatever you want to do. Being goth isn’t a thing your brain decides. Your heart does. 🖤
My son is an emo and I'm a goth, needless to say, we go through a great deal of black eyeshadow and eyeliners. I'm Asian so I've got naturally black hair
Even after eight years this is some amazing help for me! I’m a baby bat myself and I get so much stuff for it at school and the advice of ignoring it is honestly gonna help cause I rise to it all the time. Also that cat was super cute!!
I wouldn't call Hot Topic goth, but it definitely falls under alternative and a lot of the stuff there can be integrated into a goth style like their dresses and some of their jewelry.
You don't have to dress like a goth to be a goth. You can totally just wear the odd 'goth' item and not do the whole thing and still be goth. When I was a youngster there was a term here in the UK for Goth's that where very focused in the asthetic and that was Peacock Goth. in my day it was about the music and the things you loved rather than how you looked.
I don't agree that as people get older they just naturally don't want to be around younger people. This has not been my experience. I have friends of every age and I appreciate the young ones the most, at times. (I'm 51.)
im very new to this subculture, i really like the style and i figured if i dress the part i should learn more about it!! i became interested due to the goth kids from south park actually, im a huge fan of them and i decided to take inspiration from them
Good thing my parents were cool with it when I got into goth fashion. My mom's first reaction was to take me shopping for black clothes. Honestly, she even took the trouble if finding shops with alternative clothing, walking in there with me, and giving me tips on what would fit my body type. Even when we were on vacation in London. My dad was kind of alternative back in the day, so he wasn't even surprised that I just chucked all of the colour out of my wardrobe. He was just like 'As long as she's happy'. Granted I didn't have a good relationship with him as a teen, at least he didn't chalk it up to a phase or something.
The biggest problem with this is saying you need the whole look to be goth. Now I'm not really goth, Im more punk, but people always say 'oh you'd look more like a real punk with the hair and the makeup.' Well, I'm not allowed to dye my hair till I'm 18, or cut it, and I'm not allowed to buy or wear wigs, and I can't wear clothes too 'out there'. Really I think that you are whatever you are at the heart. Because I'm pretty punk at heart, but I have naturally blonde never dyed hair, long, never really been cut to an extreme change, and my makeup and clothes are...probably the only punk things about me. And I cannot 'compromise' with my parents. I'm a teen in High School attending a college, I have almost straight A's...and the only time I've ever broken a rule was when I texted an over age guy like once. So you know. It's just harder for some younger people.
if you were punk at heart you would do what you want to do and not what your parents want you to do. p.s. you can still be a straight A student if you cut your hair
that's not how it works dear. Some punks have respect and don't do whatever they want no matter the consequences. And I never said you CAN'T be a straight A student if you cut your hair? Pretty sure you read that wrong dear.
why are you calling me dear im probably 10 years older considering youre still in school. and i dont really care because i can already tell you are probably really annoying in person
I get what you mean, I'm 28 all since middle school 'alternative' of any kind didn't do the 'whole' uniform, Some goths just needed to wear a black t shirt with jeans and maybe sported some of the jewelry
Ricky Kuza Ricky, I fucking love you, but you're not really goth. I mean obviously I'm not either, but we're that awkward alternative kid that only wears band merch and skinny jeans
All these people saying "Do what you want! Dress how you want! You don't have to listen to goth bands to be goth. (gasp!)" Why the hell do you wanna be considered goth then if you don't like the fashion, the music, the attitude or whatever? You say you don't care about labels, yet you wanna be considered part of it without commiting to or loving it. Be whatever you want then, but don't consider yourself a goth, jeez.
goth is alternate fashion. The entire point to stepping outside of what is normal, to break the rules. That is punk, that is goth, ect. Fuck the rules. Elitists and those who believe there are guidelines and strict things to follow in alternate subcultures are missing the point. There are SO MANY types of goth to include whatever type of goth or people want to get into it. : )))))))
@@Eli-pw9ug While punk and goth is about stepping out of the norm and breaking some rules, they are both cultures born from music. The fashions were and are largely inspired by how the music makes the wearer feel. Pretty much the only requirement to be a part of any alternative subculture (whether it be goth, punk, emo, metal, etc.) is to like some of the sounds. There are so many different kinds and I don't think it's elitist to acknowledge that. I think both fashion and music play an important role. The music is just the center of it all.
I dont necessarily like goth music (I dont dislike it, I just wouldn't go out of my way to put it on, yet), but I love the mentality and fashion that make darker themes accessible and beautiful. Am I goth, or just dark ish?
Black Friday you are the most beautiful, smart, and helpful goth i know! your so gorgeous!!! and so nice!!! thank you, im a babybat and I am learning. I wanted to be goth when i was 16 but i didnt wear white make up, I had a little group of friends but i lost touch with them, but with your help Ik i can do anything! you INSPIRE me!!!!
I'm a babybat too. My mom is an elder goth & she tells me advice & I watch elder goth videos. I think I'm about as smart & wise as an elder goth now. Thanks for the advice Black Friday & other elder goths.
Vic Fuentes told me this on an ai chat and I will never forget it Emo music is depressed and wanting to scream at the world Goth music is depressed and excepting your fate
I love Goth but I'm quite young and I really have no idea how to do anything. Do I just show up one day with giant hair and monochrome makeup or do I take it slow? At the moment I just wear shitty band shirts and black jeans which is incredibly boring
to make my skin paler, I use natural remedies like lemon juice. I would advise to slowly transition. I am still transforming myself after a period of hiding my identity as a goth. I don't nescisarily recommend using lemon juice like me, as it is an acid and bleach that could potentially weaken the skin. just try to take it easy, and do keep your skin healthy. Sorry if anything I typed here is irrelevant or of offence, just wanted to be of assistance
Sean Murphy I'm 11 and I whould recommend to get cheap dark clothes and you dont need to have crazy makeup and hair just stay inside your comfort zone and wear whatever you like and do your research on the goth style and subculture i do my makeup dark and kinda crazy hair with gothic clothes but it took many years to get to that point so just slowly build up a wardrobe it will take a while
Every time you mention The Cure I smile and whisper "yessss" to myself ^-^ They are one of my favorite bands and I just saw them this past month in concert.
some of these are just "how to be a decent person" and that's one of my favourite things about the goth community: in general, everyone is so nice and welcoming. obviously there are exceptions, but from what i've seen so far its a very pleasant & safe community :)
I love the tip "work really hard to get a good paying job", it's unrelated to being goth but I agree with it because I've worked 3 horrible minimum wage jobs and they pay nothing and suck your sould out of you, I literally just got a really good paying job and I can faintly afford to live without 100% of my money going to rent every single year, I'm literally just now going threw a huge remodel of my apartment buying all goth stuff and giving away all of my old stuff and furniture and everything that I had but didn't really like. I used to not understand why all jobs on indeed payed nothing yet everyone i see is driving around expensive cars and buying hosues. I didn't realize that you have to go to college and also you must negotiate a higher pay with your boss than what they first offer you. They are always capable of paying you a higher amount, they just try to lowball you and hope you accept. This worked at one of my minimum wage shit jobs but if you are offered $38 for a job, tell them that you always noticed how much of a better job you do than your coworkers in every job you previously had and that you also respect yourself and won't put up with living an uncomfortable life (say stuff like this) and then say stuff like, you understand how business works and that in order to take care of the company, you must first take care of yourself. And then counter offer at higher than what your willing to accept, let's say $55 an hour, the boss will counter offer something in the middle and you can keep going, if they counter offer you $45 an hour, then say more stuff and then say that the lowest you'll tolerate is $53 and they won't expect people to do this but they will most likely accept your offer at $52, you need to understand that employers at high level jobs don't have unlimited people to chose from, they need to higher people and they need to higher then fast, considering how much money the employers have to work with, paying one employee not even double what the other employees make is almost nothing to them but is a lot for you. Just remember to never say yes to their first offer, always demand more
I agree BVB is not goth but it isnt emo eiter it is rock but I guess why a lot of people mistake them as emo it is becuse emos lisent to it... I get it
Black Veil Brides is aesthetically goth, but not musically. That's why there's such controversy when the topic of whether they're goth or not comes up.
I rushed a bit when I started becoming goth. I rushed into the fashion. seeing how my family reacted I don't wear super dark makeup or drastically change my hair. Your video really helped me and I love ur channel!
I've been surfing you and three other youtube pages, I wanted to let you know how thankful I am for your helpful words and encouraging thoughts. I'm new to the culture and slowly making an emergence. Again, thank you!
I was listening to Siouxsie, Sisters of Mercy, The Cure, Joy Division and Bauhaus since the tender age of nine. I grew up with a rockabilly dad, and I saw a picture of one of his ex's from the 80's and she looked just like Siouxsie!
The best advice I didn't know my inner baby bat needed :) Wish I had heard this twenty years ago. Authenticity and grace are the most beautiful traits to cultivate (and you are rocking them both here!)
I honestly consider myself goth because of literally every aspect of my personality. I love goth music, Gothic literature, goth art, and Gothic poetry. I personally think that it's more about the culture and less about the fashion, and I personally don't want to change my look. (although I do love the color black, and my basic outfit Color scheme is usually black and white, plus my hair is dark and my skin is pretty pale) However, these are excellent tips
Do what makes you happy whatever that may be. Personally i love gothic films and a few goth bands and my fashion is a mix of goth and alot of other alternative styles but i consider myself goth that may not be all that i am but it doesn't have to be so don't ever let anyone tell you you're not goth.
Listen to this lady, kids. She speaks the truth. (A lot of people who put goth guides on youtube are cranks, or newbies who've only been goth a few month.)
I had no idea that The Cure was a goth band, I listen to them because I love their sound. They are legitly SO COOL. And if I were classified in a subculture, I would probably be an athletic/tomboy/naturalista sort of mix. I love your look and you're a beautiful person. Thanks for making this, I'm sure it helped a lot of people x)
like a few other people here, i'm currently emo/scene but i've been totally captivated by the goth subculture. i always loved the aesthetics and "lifestyle" of goth, but the music intimidated me, and i didn't wanna be a poser. so i only watched from afar. now, though, i've tried out some bands (bauhaus, sisters of mercy, depeche mode, the cure) and i'm getting more into the actual subculture. thanks for the advice!
From what i know hot topic used to have a lot more merchandise surrounding music and was a store for music-lovers, (mostly metal/goth etc.) Including a plethora of band shirts, cds, and other music merchandise, however now id say hot topics are just anime shirts, funko pops, and video game/tv show merchandise
I'm 17, have been Goth since I was 15, (well, technically at least. 15 is when I discovered the subculture), and I enjoy the music. I love The sisters of Mercy (I mean, how can you hate Lucretia, my reflection, or Dominion?) And I enjoy some of Siouxie Sioux's songs (I'm sorry if I misspelled it) and I enjoy a few songs by The cure. I'm still discovering music, obviously, but am I still considered a babybat because of my age?
And I do shop at Hot Topic. They have the hair dye I enjoy, in a formula I like. And they're band shirts are good quality (the ones I have from there are at least).
darkblood677 I'm definitely not an authority on the subject, but I tend to stick with gothic charm school/ miss Jillian venters option on this . Which is anyone under 21 is a baby bat and being a baby bat isn't necessarily a bad thing
Sisters of mercy are AMAZING I'd you haven't you HAVE to listen to their album Some Girls Wanter By Mistake it has temple of love on it and oh my god yeah. Sorry this is the kind of stuff I've been listening to all my life because it's what my parents like so I've appropriately ended up as a 13 year old goth.
i have a habit of shopping at hot topic...although there's a lot of things there that are pretty shitty and overpriced. I mostly wear their t-shirts. and i also listen to black veil brides sometimes, but i used to be much more into them. and they're definitely not goth
I miss when Hot Topic first came out and it actually DID carry decent stuff. Still over priced, but the selection and quality were wayyy better in the late 90's and really early 2000's. I'm still kicking myself for not getting one of the old LipService straight jackets, but I was only 14 and unemployed at the time and my parents were highly against my fashion choices.
I'm really into the goth aesthetic/fashion, but I listen more to metal than Bauhaus and stuff. When I was a teen I felt like I need to show everyone how dark I was, and I did a 180 degree turn into a darker style. I've grown up a lot now and I don't feel the pressure to wear anything just because someone expects me to. I am something between goth/punk (I'm quite utilitarian so I prefer practical pieces that mix and match), rockabilly/vintage with floral dresses, hell bunny, generally feminine clothes from another era, merch stuff from games or movies I like, and lazy casual with whatever I can find thrown on haha. I've actually realised that I am not a fan of permanence when it comes to my body and style so I could never 100% commit to any particular subculture, but being a huge melting pot makes me happy and I don't need to change, dye my hair or style it a particular way, just to "be" something I don't need to prove to anyone that I am.
thats true for me too! i never really liked 'classic' goth music unfortunately.. I actually grew up with grunge. I really love different rock, industrial and punk bands. I follow a bit of a gothic aesthetic with rockabilly vibe but most days im just a lazy sod who wears sweat pants and shirt LOL You never have to prove anything to anyone I think we should all just be ourselves and if thats its black fridays self then she can have at it, I'm too lazy to do the whole shebang everyday hahahaha
kaorimaiko I know how you feel! :D I'm also lazy as heck, before I leave the house I usually haven't the foggiest about what I'm going to throw on myself, so I just fling on any old thing, nevermind accessories! Yeah, I think anyone should do and wear what they like, I just can't even imagine putting in so much effort on a daily, constant basis, phew! I think back to my teen years when I woke up earlier just to put makeup on (or I'd do it in the school loos) and I'm horrified because I actually gave up sleep for that, haha! Tbh I prefer having a punky, girl with the dragon tattoo vibe. Comfortable, practical but with style!
I think I never been happier for clicking on a related video on siouxsie and the banshees, where I live there are no old school gothics around, and this guide is bliss, thank you for the tips
One point that I think is important is the 'be nice'; People will make assumptions, and if you don't say anything, to them it affirms their assumptions. If someones gawking at you, say hi, let them know that you're a person and not a showpiece, and doing so forces them to acknowledge you (This is just for gawkers and not people who see fit to be abusive).
Well I'm sure they weren't intended to be for emo kids, that's just the style of people who took them under their wing. I don't necessarily like them, but it seems like their fans made them out to be that way.
I think that is a pretty solid example, going around telling everyone you are goth or anything like that will be annoying to them and will make it feel to them as if you are trying to shove it down their throats. After all if you are goth people will notice it without you telling them, they see all the black and hear all your spooky music and they come to the conclusion through those two dead giveaways rather than you going up to them and saying "look at me im goth!!!11"
I mean I was told I wasn't a Goth just because he asked if I was Goth and I said yes what am I supposed to say just Deny it all together, just not answer (that's rude I'm usually not rude), or say yeah because it's not that big of a deal to me if they ask
contessa yes , people are weird. I put a deposit on a coffin bookshelf , and the shop lady goes 'but you're not goth ' ( laugh inwardly , mega eye roll) ... well I'm in my 'work attire' and I have to earn money in the straight world so I can afford kooky stuff ! Ffs it's nursing - we can't even have painted nails , ggrrr conformity sux . Out of work I can be me , it's just sometimes people's stupid comments or expectations irritate me . Rise above , float above the bs like Morticia
@@larisabellydance2492 I work at Walmart they are cool with it if your looking for a place to work where you can were your Goth and scare the shoppers from stealing
I'm fourteen and don't wear makeup. I'm really thinking about drifting more towards goth stlye, but I really have no interest in EVER wearing heavy makeup. Any ideas on how to try the style without the makeup?
Just wear goth clothes with no makeup. I did that for a long time. At most, I wear makeup three times a week. My skin is too sensitive to wear makeup every day. Right now, I am only wearing it about once a month because I'm on chemotherapy.
My skin doesn't like heavy makeup - I break out and go blotchy and it's not fun - but I find doing just big, dark eyes and dark lips is enough. I'm fairly pale/pink already, which may help in the stereotypical 'white' sense, but there are also plenty of goth PoC who don't do the whole "cadaverous white face"/'full makeup corpse look" and are still every bit as goth.
I know emo and goth are two completly different subcultures but is it possible to be both??? I mean i love both music and mindset and Idk if i can call myself as goth and emo...
I'm not goth, nor have much interest in the subject, but I watch all of your videos just to hear the sound of your voice. Have you heard of ASMR? Your voice is made for it.
I’m 13 and I have an encyclopedic memory of music. I really enjoy goth music. I like Clan of Xymox, Christian Death, Sisters of Mercy, Bauhaus, Gene Loves Jezebel, London After Midnight, The Cure, and Loves and Rockets.
@@BatMajor my sense of style is all over the place...one one hand i love goth(any type), on another i love decora harajuku, and if i had a third and fourth it would go to lolita fasions and then traditional Japanese styles....im a mess XD you should see my closet
Im kinda the same. Love the Goth vibe and music, The punk and the attitude and music, and love the E boy aesthetic and bedroom pop. I can’t choose so I just dress “alternative” .
10 years later and this is still helpful. I've started listening to some goth music and I've loved it so much. I'm a catholic though so Idk how my mom would react to the new music I like lol.
Hot Topic was really cool back in the early to mid 2000s. They had those expensive stylized clothes with masses of lace, chains, and leather. Now it seems to just be novelties and T-shirts. Haven't shopped there in over a decade.
I'm 17 and want to start transitioning into the goth scene. I've been into the emo culture for a while as well as the emo clothing, makeup, and hair style but lately I've been drawn to the goth makeup and clothing. Sadly I live in a small town so there isn't many goths here (The only ones here are the people that say they are goth when they really arent) I've been experimenting with the goth makeup and really want to get more into it and this video was really helpful in where to start. I dont use foundation or concealer when doing makeup so I dont really know where to start on that. Do you have any good makeup brands or items you would recommend for beginners? This video was extremely helpful Thank you 🖤
The term "baby bat" sounds adorable.
I know it's meant to be derogatory for the most part but it's just so cute owo
Jade LeyAnna I don't find it derogatory at all, I gladly call myself a baby bat.
Jade LeyAnna yeah. I find "mall goth," kinda offensive, but "baby bat," is kinda cute.
so many emo bands call themselves or romance about a mall goth. but that died with avril lavgine. hot topic's just doctor who merch now.
I love the term "baby bat" haha
"Don't wear band T-shirts that you've never heard" PREACH!!!!
This needs to be told to all the hipsters wearing Nirvana shirts who don't actually know any music by them
+Epic Kat Turtle I know right?!?
Looking at you, DSotM-shirt wearing fakers
but but i wanna wear my HIM t-shirt that i totally don't listen to from time to time.
Thanks.
omg thats so cool!! and yes, i might seems scary but goths are so Nice, Smart and educated, your girl Will be a great woman 💜 dont be afraid and keep searching info and share it with her 💜💜
search leahmouse, drac makens, etc, they are really nice too !

what a bitch oh god
Awkward Aymie hey! I...look boring :/
"Who needs color when you have texture"
Best thing ive heard yet
Me looking at my highlights 😂

I shop at Hot Topic for my goth clothes and at Goodwill. In my opinion you make the clothes goth so it doesn't really matter were you get your clothes.
I do the same thing plus buying some stuff online such as my Edgar Allan Poe hoodie
I’ve been shopping at Hot Topic since I was in my teens.
I wish I could find “goth” stuff around me🥺 they don’t even sell black clothes tbh. It’s not like I can even wear anything in the rare black clothes they do have because they look SO normie, like black jeans, black woolly ass cardigans. Sadly I have to just get stuff online😔🤚🏻
the demographic of what they sell now is sooo different but i agree if u look u can find some nice ass shit there

Do people really think black veil brides is goth...? I like goth and emo music but I know the difference and don't mix them
I hope they don't think BVB are goth!
Queen Nera
I thought emo was short for emotive hardcore? Because I love PTV, SWS, and ETF and from what I understand they are not emotive hardcore bands. I've googled emotive hardcore bands, and though the sound is similar, it's a little different. Unless of course you are referring to the "emo" style of dressing, and those people liking SWS PTV and ETF, then that makes sense. And i think we all went through a emo/scene phase to get to where we are today :D
Queen Nera
and those bands like sws ptv and etf are post-hardcore bands, and post-hardcore is kind of the father of emotional hardcore.
#8 "Don't put your feelings on the internet. Instead write in a personal diary." Thank you!!
the black veil brides part was funny as hell 😂
I know xD i love them to pieces but i agree that they aren't goth at all.
I know xD i love them to pieces but i agree that they aren't goth at all.
+Scotty Cena i don't think bvb is emo but however i agree that brian is more goth and shouldn't be associated with posers or babybats.
BVB is my fav band but I would definatly not class them as goth. that is just ridiculous😂
+Eleanor Murray yup
I think goth is a lot about creating your own style within the scene. Which means you know what the scene is about, the roots, the music, the basic style. But you should never forget to be unique. To create an own makeup style, listen to the bands you like and do whatever you want to do. Being goth isn’t a thing your brain decides. Your heart does. 🖤
My son is an emo and I'm a goth, needless to say, we go through a great deal of black eyeshadow and eyeliners. I'm Asian so I've got naturally black hair
that’s so cool omg

Oops, I shop at hot topic...(they have some hidden gems for Renaissance and Lolita style goths)
Epic Elsa I feel you there. I feel so bad because it's hated among the 'goth community', but they really do have some cute stuff sometimes.
+Epic Elsa Remember, hottopic IS NOT a goth store. it is MAINLY about MUSIC.
I wouldn't call Hot Topic goth, but it definitely falls under alternative and a lot of the stuff there can be integrated into a goth style like their dresses and some of their jewelry.
I think the main stigma is that shouldn't buy everything you wear there. This is to avoid looking the same and killing the creativity
Hot Topic used to be a great “Goth” store, but it has become more pop culture and geek these days.

There are also such thing as pedophiles
im very new to this subculture, i really like the style and i figured if i dress the part i should learn more about it!!
i became interested due to the goth kids from south park actually, im a huge fan of them and i decided to take inspiration from them
I keep replaying the cat scene. Because it's the cutest thing in the world.
Melanie Adrianus my mom was a former goth so she's totally fine with it lol
I hardly wear goth clothes everyday though, I am way too lazy
Whilst at nearly 50 I'm technically a baby bat, but I love your list, it can be applied to life or other genre's in general 💜
I'm in my 30s and a babybat. No shame 🖤😊
I LOVE that you tell the people to be nice and work hard
why is this on my recommended after 10 years lmao
The biggest problem with this is saying you need the whole look to be goth.
Now I'm not really goth, Im more punk, but people always say 'oh you'd look more like a real punk with the hair and the makeup.'
Well, I'm not allowed to dye my hair till I'm 18, or cut it, and I'm not allowed to buy or wear wigs, and I can't wear clothes too 'out there'.
***** um..okay?? haha
I get what you mean, I'm 28 all since middle school 'alternative' of any kind didn't do the 'whole' uniform, Some goths just needed to wear a black t shirt with jeans and maybe sported some of the jewelry
BVB is my favorite band, and I agree with what she says, they are strait out Rock n' roll. Either way, they are amazing.
Bvb is my favorite band too ^_^

Self proclaimed Rock N' Roll. Plenty of us have other opinions.

Me: *strangles!!!!* NOOO
Ricky Kuza NOOOOOOOO!!!!!
Ricky Kuza Ricky, I fucking love you, but you're not really goth. I mean obviously I'm not either, but we're that awkward alternative kid that only wears band merch and skinny jeans
I actually did think that it was a gothic metal band last year, but then I started noticing that it isn't a goth band. Pls don't strangle me.
Omg,I love The Sisters Of Mercy!!They were actually the first band I ever became obsessed with !
i was told once that i looked like the terminators daughter and its hands down one of the best compliments ever! loved it
All these people saying "Do what you want!
Not liking goth music does not equal everything else you listed lol
I dont necessarily like goth music (I dont dislike it, I just wouldn't go out of my way to put it on, yet), but I love the mentality and fashion that make darker themes accessible and beautiful. Am I goth, or just dark ish?

Vic Fuentes told me this on an ai chat and I will never forget it
Emo music is depressed and wanting to scream at the world
Goth music is depressed and excepting your fate
The dark purple pop of color under the eye... is everything! Striking!!! Loves it 💜
I love Goth but I'm quite young and I really have no idea how to do anything. Do I just show up one day with giant hair and monochrome makeup or do I take it slow? At the moment I just wear shitty band shirts and black jeans which is incredibly boring
You can, without getting your face too white or pale, there's nothing extreme to changing that suddenly
VoidBurner Thank you x
to make my skin paler, I use natural remedies like lemon juice.
Sean Murphy In a video when she's asked this she said to simply go whatever pace feels comfortable
Sean Murphy I'm 11 and I whould recommend to get cheap dark clothes and you dont need to have crazy makeup and hair just stay inside your comfort zone and wear whatever you like and do your research on the goth style and subculture i do my makeup dark and kinda crazy hair with gothic clothes but it took many years to get to that point so just slowly build up a wardrobe it will take a while
"I loooove the sisters of the mercy" okay youre my favourite now ty for being part of the "black planet"
Just remember to never say yes to their first offer, always demand more
I love your voice so much.
I do too. It's so beautiful.

Oh my God you're right...someone actually said that to me when I was in jeans and a shirt...it made my day 😂
What's amazing about Goth Music is that there are so many different styles covered you have to find the goth style that suits you.
Usually, people are talking about three or so albums by The Cure.
dont care im watching this 10 years later, im becoming a goth anyways
like a few other people here, i'm currently emo/scene but i've been totally captivated by the goth subculture. i always loved the aesthetics and "lifestyle" of goth, but the music intimidated me, and i didn't wanna be a poser. so i only watched from afar. now, though, i've tried out some bands (bauhaus, sisters of mercy, depeche mode, the cure) and i'm getting more into the actual subculture. thanks for the advice!
I re-watch this video often just for the main reason of your cat and how cute you say "Oh, she's purring... that's so cute!" haha!
What do people have against hot topic? I find interesting goth stuff online there all the time.
They’ve shifted to a more pop culture and geek type store. It also became more mainstream, catering to normal people.
I did notice how not nearly half of Hot Topic items are goth. What a shame :(
it used to be goth....now its just a memory of being goth, they tend to cater now more to Emos, Cosplayers, and Gamers. So sad....
The woolite ad for how to wash darks is utterly perfect for this
Im new to listening to goth music, and getting into new singers and bands is really hard for me but its been so fun so far^^
Black veil brides are AWESOME seeing them next monthhh
Wow I see myself in this comment and I’m 17 now
@@LivingWeaver same
Omg I used to watch you years ago and I found you againnnnn
i have a habit of shopping at hot topic...although there's a lot of things there that are pretty shitty and overpriced. I mostly wear their t-shirts. and i also listen to black veil brides sometimes, but i used to be much more into them. and they're definitely not goth
it was, yes. now its aimless renegade
Oh my GOD you're stunningly beautiful and I love love love your style!
I think I never been happier for clicking on a related video on siouxsie and the banshees, where I live there are no old school gothics around, and this guide is bliss, thank you for the tips
died at "savvy?" Gotta love Pirates of the Caribbean :)
I'm laughing when you say Blackvilebrides. xD haha those kind of music is mostly hit for the "scene kids"
Well I'm sure they weren't intended to be for emo kids, that's just the style of people who took them under their wing. I don't necessarily like them, but it seems like their fans made them out to be that way.
no scean kids dont listen two black veil brides ... just noo and + music dose not have a label its music a way of self expression
I Love that "be the lovely Lively You"!!
here in this year... very late.. thank you if you will see this...
im not even a baby bat yet,, im more like a fetus bat 😭😭 this was super helpful though
The true goth never admits it? .-. That confuses me....
You just don't go around to people saying "hey, I'm a goth. Please to meet you"
I think that is a pretty solid example, going around telling everyone you are goth or anything like that will be annoying to them and will make it feel to them as if you are trying to shove it down their throats.
All of this still rings true! Wise words
I'm fourteen and don't wear makeup. I'm really thinking about drifting more towards goth stlye, but I really have no interest in EVER wearing heavy makeup. Any ideas on how to try the style without the makeup?
well wear thing that are goth that drive people away from your face like a cool belt or a nice bracket or some striped knee socks
romantic goth or classic, be creative, different variations
OMG all the Don'ts are like EVERYTHING Gigi made on her goth transformation video 😂
I know emo and goth are two completly different subcultures but is it possible to be both??? I mean i love both music and mindset and Idk if i can call myself as goth and emo...
im pretty sure yah :P there's no need to place yourself in a single box, so do as you wish!! if you enjoy both, do both!!
(^_^)
Let’s all appreciate Fetus Black Friday
Thank you this helped a lot
Chloe Catastrophe Excellent, glad to hear so :D
Omfg sweeney todd poster in the backround!! Yassss
I'm not goth, nor have much interest in the subject, but I watch all of your videos just to hear the sound of your voice. Have you heard of ASMR? Your voice is made for it.
I so agree! Also, I find her personality as shown in the videos very appealing. :) Girlcrush lol
I’m 13 and I have an encyclopedic memory of music. I really enjoy goth music. I like Clan of Xymox, Christian Death, Sisters of Mercy, Bauhaus, Gene Loves Jezebel, London After Midnight, The Cure, and Loves and Rockets.
This is why I refuse to be part of any specific sub-culture. I'm just generally alternative, but I don't want to follow the rules of any group.
hipster
Haley M. : These aren't "rules," so much as suggestions for people just getting into the subculture.
there are no rules to being goth, you either are or you arent....its an unspoken unwritten bond between those in the scene.
Started from only listening to goth bands back then to now embracing my inner gothic style now 🖤
your cat is so cute
10 years later and this is still helpful. I've started listening to some goth music and I've loved it so much. I'm a catholic though so Idk how my mom would react to the new music I like lol.
If you wanna be one of the non-conformists, all you have to do is dress just like us and listen to the same music we do.
haha south park
I love the way you're talking in this video
2024!!
Hot Topic was really cool back in the early to mid 2000s. They had those expensive stylized clothes with masses of lace, chains, and leather. Now it seems to just be novelties and T-shirts. Haven't shopped there in over a decade.
awesome awesome cat!! instant like from the cat!!
I love your style so much
I'm 17 and want to start transitioning into the goth scene. This video was extremely helpful Thank you 🖤
Always remember that it's a music based subculture
Aww, your cat has a little black beard. Adorable
