Track Race - Polo GTI vs Yaris GRMN vs Renault Clio RS F1 vs Mini Cooper S

- Every now and then, the stars align and the all the cars we want to race head-to-head become available. This is one such occasion.
Sadly, the Ford Fiesta ST will not be sold in South Africa, and is very conspicuous by its absence here. With the the feisty Ford missing from the line-up, it was up to the new Volkswagen Polo GTI, the super-rare, supercharged Toyota Yaris GRMN, the special edition Renault Clio RS 18 F1 and the latest Mini Cooper S to battle it out.
In this video, we head to the full Killarney circuit where each car would have one hot lap to claim victory. Our in-house race-ace Ashley Oldfield was at the wheel and after a few laps in each car to get his eye in, he set about setting the best time for each car.
The weather gods were not kind to us however, so be sure to stick around till the end of the video for an explanation of the conditions each car faced.

@@oddities-whatnot Limited editions are almost always pricey, because theyre special versions performances oriented. Toyota just show up a yaris could be a pain in the ass for other brands on tracks !

Definitely. As much as I like the Yaris GRMN, I reckon the Clio RS would be slightly faster in the same conditions.

I love how people brag about VW being fast. The Yaris is the shit I love the fact that everyone with a small hot hatch that tries to race you in the yaris will get there asses whooped. If they made them in america I would definitely buy one. I actually own a 2008 yaris with 106 hp and its one of my favorite cars.

The $10k cheaper Polo wasn't as fast. The VW in that price range to go for is the Golf GTI. The variable conditions also make the Mini slower than it could be, it also makes the GRMN seem faster than it is.
they all run under the same conditions , noone was favored , in wet conditions the toyota won hands down and was undisputed...They can test them all in dry conditions to see what happens but things won t change much... toyota handles as well as the rest 3 ( not saying it handles better ) in the corners and we know from the drag races and this last track run that it owns them in the straights.... so its only logical it ll win everywhere ..."by an inch or a mile" ...depending the conditions and surfaces they are running ...

Polo GTi irregardless of track times, it is about every day driving and comfortability
I own the Clio RS and it's very comfortable to drive also the loud exhaust and aggressive power curve is turned on by a button. Until then it's a calm little character just waiting for a fraping 👌

They did put together Cooper JCW 3dr, Polo 2.0GTI, Yaris GRMN, Fiesta 1.5ST, Peugeot 208 GTI. The winner was Yaris, followed by ST, Cooper JCW 3dr, and Polo GTI was almost head to head with Peugeot GTI. I dont remember if the JCW was auto or manual. Oh there was also Clio RS not Sure what spot it held

IMHO, u should rather do a flying lap time, to take out the different gearboxes and launch control systems to make it a more fair game.

Can we PLEASE have a flying lap. Like to get a real comparison of how these cars perform against machinery like a normal lap time? I mean a standing start means nothing in racing. if this car on a flying lap does below a 1:30.00 that means something. If it’s a standing start it means nothing.

Germans are not the best when it comes to hatch cars Renault was always the fastest since the megan 2000 and now the Japanese are attacking with this fast little machine

for example the best for me meaning which is the overal better to every day use and highway use with safety with quality with nice brakes interior etc.

@Cars.co.za I would kindly request your team to 1 day do a review on car lights, I feel like a lot of car manufactures produces cars with poor lights, it is so uncool and unsafe to drive some of these cars in dark areas such as Free ways N1 like.

Yay the Yaris won ! I love that GRMN. Its the best looking and best sounding out of all 4, and the supercharger is just brutal power non stop, no turbo lag !

Of the 4 the Polo is the only one you can drive daily and not get out with a broken back and a sore bum. So it wins for me🤷🏻♂️.
Not true. As a long-time VW fan I compared the previous Polo GTI to a Clio RS Cup on some rough roads and found the Clio more comfortable. I've covered 45000km in my Clio over the last 3 years on a mixture of road surfaces and have never found it wanting.
Grmn had two advantages, driver had three practice laps beforehand, and track lines dried out.. So I think it probably slower than the rest.. 8p
I think this driver knows this circuit through and through. I've seen him driving this circuit in quite some other cars before the Yaris.
the toyota and renault looks like a blast to drive, the polo have such higher end looking interior and is definitely worth the money, the mini and polo are the kindest to the eyes which makes it easier to drive around without people looking at you all day. if money was not an issue, i'd easily chose either the yaris or renault, but as a daily, the other 2 are definitely my pick.

I do find it rather annoying that the presenters refer to these cars as 'Warm' hatches. I would consider a warm hatch as something like your R-Line, GT, GSi, ST-Line, etc.
Perhaps an argument could be made that the cars with auto gearboxes are 'Warm' but I can't see how you could possibly say that a car as aggressively set up as the Yaris GRMN is simply 'Warm'.
These are hot hatches.
Cars like the Focus RS and the A45 are simply 'Mega' or 'Super' Hatches. They are just insanely quick.
Also considering the clio rs is quicker than the current focus st
Completely agree and even the hot hatch scale works... warm, hot, super ect. But nobody wants to call a Golf R a Mega hatch and calling a Polo GTI a warm hatch is FUN. And since we are talking hot hatches, that is enough said. "Warm" hatches for the win!

Looks like facts disagree.
The Focus ST does a 6.5 on 0-100km/h with a manual.
Renault Trophy 220 RS does it in 6.6 with an auto.
Honestly not that impressed with the current Clio RS. not enough torque and too expensive for a Clio.
So no not all will bang a Focus ST.
I wonder why they did not use the new Fiesta ST in this test.

I dont need so much brain like yours to tell my opinion. It does not look sporty compared to the Clio RS and Yaris GRMN. Just looks like normal polo with mag rims. If you get enough vitamin A for your eyes you would see how poor it handles the corners and look at front tires when cornering, the gap between tires and fenders so huge and reveals looks of a cheap non hot hatch car. Clio RS looks the part

the yaris starts off at 2411 us pounds. plus a 214 us pound corolla motor the 6 speed is about 150 us pounds so by adding the BBS and shocks and seats and such you drop like. 200 us pounds? so its reallt 2011 us pounds :^) with 217 us hp
