Saw The Hound at Yale in 73. 'Fetched' his jug for him. I was the only brother in the audience so we talked a bit. A real class act and a gentleman.

What a fabulous memory ! Wow he played Yale. The first time I met him was when he played at my High School. My little brother was with me and we both felt in love with the man and his music. After the show we hung out with him. Hound Dog had my little brother fetch his rolled up brown paper bag for him. David still loves that his first snort in life was shared with The Hound !

It just does not get anymore " CHICAGO " than this. I was fortunate to be a Southside kid in the 70's to witness it. I missed seeing Little Walter, though. But saw practically every other blues artist. There was no internet then, all I did was read who was credited on my Cream and Stone's albums!

@@tgbluesman I was the same way! I remember thinking Eric Clapton was the greatest guitarist alive! All those riffs and lead solos, to me were incredible. I couldn't believe a person could have that much talent? This was when I was 13 mind you, then I figured out just who he was emulating ! First time I heard Stevie Ray on the radio, it was his Albert King stuff that really floored me. All SRV's talent aside I just couldn't believe anyone could nail Albert like that? The Blues gentlemen, is life!

This is so amazing. Thank you so much to whomever posted it. My last memories of Hound Dog was dancing in an alley with him at four in the morning on a windy night in Chicago. I was at a Groucho Marx party where the only entrance was the fire escape. Hound Dog and the boys were just passing through and stopped on it to jam up the party. He was pretty old when I knew him, so this is just fab to see him in younger years. We originally met when he played at my high school. My brother and I drank something with him out of a paper bag after the show. Thanks again !!!

Here I am in living in Deep South Mississippi, a long ways from Chicago. I would have never believed that I would end up here as I was sitting at my drafting table in Niles North, 1969. Such is life....
I was fortunate enough to have seen Wolf, Muddy, Spann, Hubert, and my old pal from Lincoln Ave. Leffty Dizz. Koko, Magic Sam; Junior Wells, and Buddy Guy all playing the clubs. Hound Dog Taylor, and many others at the Maxwell St Market on Sundays. Thinking about some other cats that I knew, and shared a drink, or two with. Odie Payne Jr, Eddie Shaw from the Wolf Gang, Hubert Sumlin, and Sunnyland Slim. I was at Slim"s 80th birthday party at ???? The place across Halsted from B.L.U.E.S. We had a very good time.
I was there, and got my share. What a glorious time to be a Blues fan.
Sittin' on my little porch tonight it's very quiet, Covid quiet. There are crickets chirping in the background, stars shining brightly, and my favorite music got my toe tapping. Got my "snuff juice"' everywhere; just waiting on "Shakin' Box Car Joe." I got a feelin' that he'll be on the next train that rolls into town, and he'll be staggering up with a big smile on his face. I 'll have a tall cool one waiting for him, an over-stuffed shrimp po-boy, a hot bath, and a good flop. I got sawdust on the floor, too just for us.
Listening to my favorite music... getting back in touch with the Universe.
In Stugis they had a T-shirt that said "Fuck Covid - 19 I wen to Sturgis."
I made my own that said "Fuck Covid - 19 I'm Staying Home, and Listening To The Blues!"
Life is crazy hard now, but don't flip out. Remain cool at all costs. A cool head is a cool vibe, and we need lots of those rigrt now.
As Donald Sutherland's character, "Goof Ball" said in the Clint Eastwood movie "Kelley's Heroes",
"No Negative waves, man no negative waves."
Good Luck to all of you out there.
Stay Safe, and Keep The Faith!

Hound Dog Taylor here shows the brilliance of early black musicians. He does not give a damn about whether or not he can sing, he just SINGS - and that rawness means his performance here touches your soul as does so much early black musician music.
The bass player and harmonica player follow suit, just playing and not worried about being all polished and note perfect - so through pure talent they all end up being even higher than polished and note perfect.
Koko Taylor - immense and all for the same reasons.

In college from 1968-72, got to see many legends. Worked with a campus crew to support Hound Dog's appearance; had a grand smile the entire show, unlike this clip where he looks so austere. Walter could play like Sonny Terry, Sonny Boy Williamson, but his own electric amped songs begat his legendary stature. Saw Sonny and Brownie many times, and marveled at their longevity, into the films "The Jerk," (yes, watch the end!) and "The Color Purple." Saw Koko and Pinetop Perkins ten years ago at ETown in Boulder before they passed. Pinetop is on keys behind John Lee Hooker in the Chicago street scene in "The Blues Brothers." Didn't realize a young Matt Murphy was backing everybody including Sonny Boy way back. The movie's hokey, but just an excuse to pay homage to the rich heritage of blues and rock n' roll talent rapidly vanishing. Like a blues version of "Will the Circle Be Unbroken."

LOVE THIS!!! Thanks so much for posting. In addition to all the great work by the performers, it's fun to see Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee, just sitting stage right, waiting for their turn...which I'm sure was equally amazing. It made me wish Little Walter and Sonny Terry would break into a "conversation" on their harps. Still epic, as is, though!

It could be Sonny Terry, I was thinking it was Pops (Robert) Taylor, Koko's husband. I had the honor of mixing audio for Koko in Columbia, MO back in 1977 and Pops sat next to me at the mixing board, offering helpful sound tips between sips of rum and cokes. It was a long time ago -- and this clip is ten years older than that -- but I think that's Pops. Could be wrong!

And the blues, jazz, and rock were born, music is such an amazing chain- truly a unifying force. The bottleneck guitar playing, a lady with soul, singing, no t. and a. popping out! Namaste. It is so interesting how blues radiates into your soul. I remember the first time that happened when I was young - felt it in my stomach, my limbs, my brain and my heart. An explosion of awakening of the senses that was pretty powerful for a 15 year old. Life is hard and hurtful, but singing about it gives us the power to endure.
