  • This coconut orchid (Maxillaria tenuifolia) is top-heavy after blooming, and has some pseudobulbs dangling outside the pot. Let's check out how to repot it!

    Lovely plant! I remember how gorgeous it looked when it was in full bloom for you, a few months ago.
    From what I have noticed, and from what I also discussed with other local growers, it appears that some varieties of this orchid have large pbulbs that grow with more distance between them, like yours, or smaller and more compact.
    I have gotten one last year, the smaller pbulb variety, and it has been growing like crazy, I think it has over 100 pbulbs, but it's only about 20cm tall.
    With such a large plant, it's becoming increasingly harder to keep it watered enough, though, but it's so gorgeous, looking like a bush, I haven't the heart to cut it. When I got it, it was a big plant, but had no roots, so it took quite some pampering before new roots grew, but now she looks happy and doubled in size, at least. The only thing it hasn't done, is bloom for me just yet, but I hope it will soon, as it's fully recovered now.

      Try to increase lights before blooming, it will send out blooms like crazy. If you look closely to my _Maxillaria_ , you can find that some burnt tips on the end of leaves. And I also removed some burnt leaves before filming.

      In Taiwan, we can find 4 major kinds of coconut orchids during its flower season:
      1.The original wild Maxillaria tenuifolia, like in my another Max. tenuifolia video, has regular size but skinnier pseudobulbs. ►th-cam.com/video/ojGGsVaL6NI/w-d-xo.html
      2. Selected and crossed Max. tenuifolia, like the one in this video, has slightly bigger and rounder shape of pseudobulbs. I guess it is a 2N (diploid) orchid.
      3. _Max. tenuifolia_ ‘4N’, is a tetraploid _Max._ , has obviously bigger pseudobulbs and flowers.
      4. Variegated _Max. tenuifolia_ , are the variegated version of selected and crossed, has yellow strips on pseudobulbs. Some are the variegated version of 4N.

      @@SamsOrchids Oh wow, that sounds amazing! Didn't know there were variegated cultivars of this one, haven't seen one online, either, that must be a treat. Mine is the wild one, it appears, thanks for letting me know.

      I was searching everywhere for some knowledge about what you just wrote! Recently I made a trip to USA and found a nice orchid nursery called Belledanse Orchids in Louisiana state. Among them they had 3 types of coconut orchids. One of them was a yellow variety and the other two were the original variety but the difference with both originals was, according to the saleswoman, only in the pseudobulb size. One of them had smaller pseudobulbs with more foliage and overall it looked like a bushier greener plant and the other one had bigger rounder pseudobulbs and had more space in between them and not so much foliage. I went for the smaller bushier one but was heartbroken not being able to take both of them in case there was any other differences.
      I would really appreciate hearing your knowledge about this differences and similarities and if they are both the same species and variety or should I buy that bigger pseudobulb one the next opportunity I get.

    Did the cuttings grow into new plants?

    • @SamsOrchids
      @SamsOrchids  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, it has new pseudobulbs, and some old speudobulbs shriveled and dried out. It'd be growing better if give it more lights.
