I was sitting at my desk, going through the payment orders that had made it over to my computer, as I usually do. Unusually, however, among the list of receipts was one for… well, 200 watermelons 😅
I rang up procurement, and they redirected me to my dad, the chairman of Azizi Developments, for the full story.
On a particularly hot summer day last month, my father was visiting one of our construction sites, as he usually does. But as we all know, this has been a particularly unforgiving summer the world over this year. He immediately thought about what he would usually do to find some relief on such days, and a watermelon is what first came to mind.
I imagine that going for watermelons on a summer day is a tradition for most families in Dubai. The difference in our case is that our family is quite bigger than usual. So, within an hour, our procurement team had secured over 200 melons for the entire construction crew to enjoy on that hot July day.
My father’s spur-of-the-moment decision reminds me that even though we build homes for a living, our key focus has always been people, and to be able to celebrate our team’s efforts in small but meaningful gestures like this makes me glad for the opportunity to be learning from his example.
