For those of you not from Ohio, we have a local folk cryptid called “The Loveland Frogman”. It’s basically a mucky green cousin of Mothman who lurks off the highways.
The game “Loveland” is definitely a reference to the local lore, you guys should check it out.

one time I watched a video of the last 15 minutes of final fantasy xiv 1.0,, obviously they incorporated a lot of the shutting down into the story so that they could relaunch it but it had a really haunting quality to it. just a group of friends who had bonded through this game and shared so many adventures,, standing and staring at this massive red moon which has been growing ever closer throughout the story,, with the music being reduced to a chilling wind ambience with the main theme echoing throughout...it's honestly a masterclass in capturing the feeling of a dying world, and in combining real life contexts into the games story

The mind-boggling skeletons are from a PS1 game called King's Field by FromSoftware. Apparently it was sort of a precursor to the Souls series.

    • @camelkingclarith
      @camelkingclarith 2 ปีที่แล้ว +27

To elaborate, Demon's Souls was conceptualized as a King's Field reboot before it was made its own IP. The Moonlight Sword is an important part of King's Field lore, and its appearances in Armored Core, the Souls series, and a myriad of other games developed or published by Fromsoft are references to King's Field. The archetype of the depressed warrior who gives you hints on how to progress while passive-aggressively insulting you originated from King's Field as well. Seathe the Scaleless and Black Dragon Kalameet from Dark Souls are deadass just White Dragon Seathe and Black Dragon Guyra from King's Field.
There are a lot of other connections, but those are the first to pop into my head. There are also Shadow Tower and Eternal Ring, which have a similar relation to King's Field as Bloodborne and Elden Ring do to Souls, where they're part of the series but not really.
It's also worth pointing out that way Demon's Souls is to King's Field, Sekiro is to Tenchu, another old Fromsoft series

Also if you liked Protagoras Bleeds I highly recommend the devs previous game, Fatum Batula, a very surreal and interesting ps1 styled exploration game (that was also on the 2020 demo disk). Also might as well mention that Janitor Bleeds and Heilwald Loop came out; from what i gathered those two and outcry seem to be the only 2021 demo disk games that have come out. i experienced this going to locker cleanout at my HS after covid hit. walking into the normally bustling hallway that was the home to my locker, homeroom, lunch, and after-school activities and having the motion sensor lights come on during daylight hours was jarring. It was the hub of my high school social life and it was deserted, dark except the lights through the windows through doors backlighting a trashcan perfectly in the center of the hallway. The weird feeling was compounded by the fact i was graduating. I ended up going around and taking a bunch of pictures trying to capture that feeling, and i still feel it when i look back at them.

My sister is a prison guard. She says full moon nights at work when she worked nights were *the worst*. The inmates would cause more trouble, do more stuff to get attention from guards out of boredom, not settle down for lights out as easily, and there would be more aggression and fights or near-fights in general. She mentioned heatwaves can have the same effect, so a full moon during one was really bad news and meant a long, hard night of dealing with restless inmates. (She worked in a prison with out air conditioning, for reference)
I also live in a large low-income apartment village. Full moon nights here are often worse than any other nights for domestic arguments or fights and other issues like that, to the point where I make sure my partner is always with me that night because I don't want to be alone. (I'm a younger woman who lives alone) We also had one of our buildings burn down on the full moon. Probably a coincidence, but... *shrugs*
Just anecdotes, but in my experience, there's absolutely something weird about full moons for humans.

One of the things that can be a cause of thr eerie or creepy music in these games is the tritone. On the do re mi octave, there are two notes that stand out, fa and ti. When you put these notes together, you get the tritone. It can work in any octave and lead into other chords but by itself it is very attention grabbing and eerie. It was banned in certain churches for a while because they sayed it was full of sin. Many horror movies also use this to give the feel of something being wrong.
These early developers while making the soundtrack for their games, possibly found this note(whether in a low or high octave). It is great for leading into different chords, as i mentioned before, so they would add this to their music track and think nothing of it. Hence why some of these early games have very unfitting creppy music.

actually tbh I'd say PSX style games and ARGs + analog horror where very much 3 seperate but large things long before they started merging together. The indie horror scene has been strife with PSX style games for years now, puppet combo for example released babysitter bloodbath in 2013 and powerdrill massacre in 2015

The drowning machine was genuinely beautiful. Im so sorry for what happened to the creator and I hope they can recover from their loss

I remember I found out the museum is based off of a compilation game by namco, where it had extremely similar layouts of a museum to various games they made! So the museum in this is another fun callback!

I would totally be interested in hearing about the other versions as well! It's honestly really cool to find all these new little neat horror games, and it found me at just the right time being sick and having a lot of spare time on my hands!!

I think the Loveland game might have been reference to The Loveland Frogman, which is a cryptid of a giant humanoid frog spotted around Loveland, Ohio. So based on that information I predict that if there’s a full game it could end with either the people of Loveland becoming frog people or the frogs they were breeding become giant humanoids

If anyone wants a demo "disc" in 2022, super rare games does a mix tape of indie games. Super cool and physical!
Also I'd love to see a vid on rpgmaker horrors! They were SO big on YT in like 2012 and now there's basically nothing. I'm talking Aoni, Ib, Mad Father!

I haven’t exactly downloaded the Demo Disc yet but I looked into the Drowning Machine and my god it was such a gut punch. I’m still bawling while writing this. I don’t think I could see myself ever playing it just because it hits way too hard as a person who struggles with mental health but it wouldn’t feel right for me to not at least pitch in and buy the game to show support to it.

It’s definitely a journey, I’d recommend playing it when you’re in a good clear head space. If you’ve been through similar horrors I’ve been told it’s comforting for some folks who’ve played it but I wouldn’t count on that. I’d love to hear what you think about it if you do play it!

For a bit of context for Loveland, there's a town in the USA that shares the name. It's in Ohio and they have a cryptid called the Loveland Frogmen.
They're like, humanoid frogs that can do magic(?).

Oooo, I've been in dying MMOs and it's so sad and crazy. That game hit me with nostalgia. Lucky I'm obsessed with WoW, which I don't see dying anytime soon.
