Amazing video. Another reason why gender is important: Some words that are spelled and pronounced exactly the same may take different meanings for different genders. For instance "le livre" means the book, whereas "la livre" means Pound Sterling.
English is my second language. How simple English actually is! Learning French is like doing acrobatics in your head. Haha... French people see a gender in everything they see (my eyes are popping).
I found a simple answer to this. I just stick to one and forget the rest. French may be staring at you funny but they'll get what you're trying to say. Fuk the french anyways. Merci á tous for coming to my Ted talk
dear alexa: when I started learning french, you were/are the first french teacher I subscribed to. Since then, I have been following you and other teachers on TH-cam in search of that magic wand that will teach me french the fastest and the easiest. But, and I truly mean it, you are one of the best, if not the best, french teacher of all. Thank you very much and I will continue following you. Merci beaucoup!
Your videos are totally underrated. I hope more people will get to watch your videos. I've learnt Spanish, Italian and French through TH-cam and I can confidently say that yours is by far the best and the most concise teaching video I have watched. It is just amazinggg!!! Merci beaucoup Alexa
One thing I might add where you compare interrogative pronouns from french to english (11:55) .. when you go from singular to plural in english there is actually a change that is needed from "what" to "which" ... so it should be "What pen is on the table" and "which pens are on the table"
I wish the 300 dollars I spent on the book and the online program would have been half this good. If I'm gonna get ripped off by college and forced to buy a 300 dollar book it should at least be worth half that at bare minimum
This is probably the most important video to comprehending the fundamentals of French...unless I'm ahead of myself. All of French is surrounded by Gender and number, you can't get away from it!! very nice video. Merci, et bisou bisou :)
In my language, even animals have no gender, we call cat as "pusa" ( whether it's male or a female), book as "aklat" ( no gender at all) So is every thing, only person has a gender. I think you're the best French teacher I know :)
I have some long term French friends. As their English has got better so my French has got worse! These lessons have explained things that I have never grasped before. Brilliant and thank you so much. I will be teaching them how to speak French properly when I visit this year LOL
Excellent lesson, Alexa! :) Regarding the structure, I would rather call the "5 reasons" word groups, as they all refer to a comparable class of elements (possessive pronouns, subject pronouns, demonstrative pronouns...). 6:40 You use the word "agree" here, but a better translation would be "to conform, to match, to correspond". The number and gender of adjectives and possessive pronouns (...) match, correspond to, conform with the number and gender of the noun.
This summary lesson is very useful. It is heavy loaded with grammatical content, though. So one has to stop and go and repeat it again and again. It serves well for either repeating the principles, or finding out where your gaps are for working on them separately. Thank you so much, Alexa.
Wow! I love the way you explained, is so clear! My mother language is portuguese, so for us there is no "it" too, something is she or he, and the rules are the same, everything needs to agree with feminine or masculine, so is easier, but your explanation make it much easier...
I wish someone had said this sentence to me months ago. "EVERYTHING HERE IS EITHER HE OR SHE". I NEVER understood how Il est vert could mean IT is green when Il = he. It's because everything is a he or she. This over many other things just made it click in my head. TY Alexa, you're making this so much easier for me. I only want to learn bc I love the language. I'll probably never have the money (and with 4 kids, I'll probably never have time) to travel to France, but I've loved this language my entire life, and I'm determined to learn to speak it, even if I never have a reason to use it. My husband is trying to learn with me simply bc he knows it makes me happy, so hopefully we'll both get there one day.
I never this serious learning franc before..but now i do.. merci beaucoup madam pour les lecons..je pense que parle francais est dificile mais il es beau.. :)) Bisou bisou..😚😚😚
I have trouble with tenses and genders but you explained it perfectly. I now have it and I have been watching your other videos. I'm starting to understand a little bit of what you say in French. thank you I'm a huge fan!
Ca fait presque de 2 ans je vous suis pour appendre le francais.J’avais du mal a bien compri cette leçon plusieurs fois mais enfin j ai réussi de le battre. Grace a vous,Mme Alexia!
Madame my mother tongue is Romanian and I find learning French very very very easy as in our language the mouth accent and tongue communication are similar to french we also have two genders and words usually end with ez,re,er,men and ar I wish you visit Romania In my country people are very friendly . I know 11 languages as I am vlogger . These languages are Spanish,Italian,English,Romanian,German,Dutch,Finnish,Russian, Swedish,Norwegian and Turkish. I am learning French as I am travelling in France . Honestly I absolutely love France . From diverse cultures to delicious , tasty food . Merci Beaucoup À Bientot Je vous remerci
Learning French would a bit less challenging if gender was done away with. The French is so avant garde in my aspect and it's surprising that this hasn't already been done. Heck they originated the terminology.
Hats off to you Alexa. You are super. I don't know how you get to know what problems your subscribers are facing but you just simply solve it.thank you. One more problem I am facing I have to write a online french language exam in coming June, I am facing a problem of using accents online. I tried and practice with various methods I don't know which one will be acceptable and allowed to use. Please suggest
It's 'you catch my drift" or "you get the gist of it". I've never heard "you get my grip" lol it's super cute though! It's like how you say "you're going to tell me 'why is that?' " instead of saying "you're going to ASK me 'why is that' " It's cute ;-)
Thanks. This is more an explanation of how to use gender rather than its importance. If you're only speaking the differences are quite small, and given the poor level of most French people's English, mistakes in gender are acceptable in reality. So many Francophones I meet have absolutely no language skill in any other language so my rubbish French is welcomed. Passing school exams is a different matter.
Here remember one thing, that the adjective goes with the noun you are describing. Like in your example the noun is ‘pas’ which is musculine and hence you would always say it as “ Un pas courageux”.
Is there some sort of office in Paris, for example - when the car was invented that says 'Ok, what shall it be called in French? And they say well, we've decided it's going to be called 'voiture' and we've decided that the ladies can have this one.' ? Because that's how my crazy mind has always seen it
When Alexa said "it's not that hard, is it?" I laughed with pain, coz I found it hard to remember and apply in conversation, although I understand this video. headache.....
Alexa, you are a wonderful French teacher ! I would like to know how to identify the gender of an inanimate object such as chair, table etc in French ? Merci !
my opinion is everything in a roman language is either masculine or feminine just because the inventors of the language needed to classify everything, likewise in my language, which is Chinese, all characters can be divided into 4 tones, which i know is a disaster for Occidental people, just because the tones help to distinguish the characters with the same pronunciation. haha. Anyway, you've got genders and conjugations in your languages, and we've got tones and complicated strokes in ours. It's fair, and fun. LOL
Mme Alexia, Pouviez-Vous nous conseiller comment de améliorer de paler français couramment parceque dans mon cas j’écris bien français mais j’ai un problem de parler couramment avec accent anglais.
Margot Petersen hi margot i'm a french girl who trying to improve my english, i can help you if you need me for english. See you= à bientôt (in french)
Margot Petersen so first of all you dont need to use "de" in that sentence , the properly sentence would be : "pouvez vous nous donner des conseils pour améliorer mon français , parce -que je sais écrire en français mais je dois améliorer mon accent"
Vous pouvez regarder d'autres chaînes TH-cam, comme la mienne :), des films et reportages en français avec sous-titrages dans la même langue et la chaîne France 24. Essayez aussi de toujours parler français dès que l'occasion se présente et même si vous faites des fautes, ce n'est pas grave. :)
Hands down, one of the best French language teachers online.
Vrai
Oui :)
Oui👍👍
OH MY GOD WOW
Amazing video.
Another reason why gender is important:
Some words that are spelled and pronounced exactly the same may take different meanings for different genders. For instance "le livre" means the book, whereas "la livre" means Pound Sterling.
The clarity in your teaching is amazing!
T
yeah are you the gay guy in japan?
Ye
English is my second language. How simple English actually is! Learning French is like doing acrobatics in your head. Haha... French people see a gender in everything they see (my eyes are popping).
lol...😂
There are languages that have the neutral gender as well. It ads variety but yeah, it makes things convoluted.
I found a simple answer to this. I just stick to one and forget the rest. French may be staring at you funny but they'll get what you're trying to say. Fuk the french anyways. Merci á tous for coming to my Ted talk
true

Best French teacher you improve people's French every day
I wish the 300 dollars I spent on the book and the online program would have been half this good. If I'm gonna get ripped off by college and forced to buy a 300 dollar book it should at least be worth half that at bare minimum

I love these videos. So clear and well explained. The strength is in the examples given... thank you very much
You are a great teacher Alexa . It is my third day of learning french ! I am 17 and I have loved this language .. I hope I will continue
This is the best, comprehensive, least complicated, helpful lesson on this infuriatingly complex subject I have ever heard. Thank you Alexa.
Learnt so much from this lesson, merci!
I have some long term French friends. As their English has got better so my French has got worse! These lessons have explained things that I have never grasped before. Brilliant and thank you so much. I will be teaching them how to speak French properly when I visit this year LOL
She is one of the best for English speakers and Nelson for Spanish speakers. Thanks a lot for this video.

Firstly Good morning Madam, I am from India .Your teaching method is very well. Thanks
From India 🎉
This was incredibly useful, thank you!

Yes, wenn it is neutral in english, it is generally "il" in french : it is cold outside = il fait froid dehors. :)
I'm pretty sure you'll learn to hate french like the rest of us.
Jean-Eider Pierre-Louis I could never! It might frustrate me a bit, but I couldn't HATE the language. The thought makes me sad!
Go ahead, Carrie W!!!!
?
she is a blessing to this world to be honest
A masterclass. Merci beaucoup Alexa.

I now understand that it is the gender of the word that counts,NOT whether it is a male or female saying it. 👍
Tu es le meilleure prof 👍
Mais ce sujet est trop difficile 🤦♀️
J’ai mal à la tête 😄😄😄
It's 'you catch my drift" or "you get the gist of it". I've never heard "you get my grip" lol
it's super cute though! It's like how you say "you're going to tell me 'why is that?' " instead of saying "you're going to ASK me 'why is that' "
It's cute ;-)
Amazing language teacher.
You should be teaching us the difference between IN, EN and UN.
(If anyone has a link to it, please share.)
Hi. Would you still be understood if you wrote or said, la stylo est verte or le Fleur est vert by mistake?
Yeah, French people will perfectly understand you but they will immediately know that you're not a French native :)
Kévin Barreau Thanks. No chance of being taken for a native with my accent!
Bien sûr, je vous comprends très bien !
Mon Dieu Alexa. Ta langue est si difficile. Tant de règles et des exceptions. Mais je reste en amour avec le français!
I'm thankful to you ma. I love i call you my teacher, God bless you !
Such a clear explanation! Merci!
Thanks Alexa you’re so great 🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆
merci beaucoup mam for clearing my concept of masculine and feminine
After the video, this is my face: 🤣 ok well

Merci beaucoup Alexa, your teaching methods is very very good
I am your You Tube student from India.Take my respect
Thank you from Philippines!
That was brilliant. Many thanks
Your videos are great! Thank you. Can you make a video about Quantite: precise, imprecise??? I'm so confused
Hey I have a question since I am a girl do I say
‘Une pas courageuse’ or ‘Un pas courageux’ because I’m really not sure.
Here remember one thing, that the adjective goes with the noun you are describing. Like in your example the noun is ‘pas’ which is musculine and hence you would always say it as “ Un pas courageux”.
Hello Alexa!! May you teach us the ways can you use to know feminine and masculine about national? thanks you .
Très bonne leçon Alexa. Je les apprecie beacoup. Pour moi c'est plus d'une revue mais je les aime quand-même.
Is there some sort of office in Paris, for example - when the car was invented that says 'Ok, what shall it be called in French? And they say well, we've decided it's going to be called 'voiture' and we've decided that the ladies can have this one.' ? Because that's how my crazy mind has always seen it
lol, the french were arguing if they should call covid19 masculine or feminine
When Alexa said "it's not that hard, is it?" I laughed with pain, coz I found it hard to remember and apply in conversation, although I understand this video. headache.....
Thank you for this helpful video.
Alexa, you are a wonderful French teacher ! I would like to know how to identify the gender of an inanimate object such as chair, table etc in French ?
