I am retired and stay home much of the time. Today was very busy out and about. I appreciate having a cozy, warm, decorated place to return after a such a day.
Regarding your comment that some people think that budgeting means deprivation. To me, deprivation is when you have spent all of your money without thought or planning, and then you have an urgent need for something. When you budget and put money back, it gives you options. Not budgeting can lead not only to deprivation, but to desperation. Yes, sometimes it's not fun to give up something from time to time, but it's really nice when you know that you have a cushion against things that life can bring your way. Yes, that peace of mind is worth a lot.
Totally agree with you. Handle your four walls first. Cover needs, then wants,if budget allows. Too many people waste money on wants, then stress and scramble to cover needs.
100% agree with the value of that "peace of mind". I remember lying awake at night unable to sleep because I didn't know if I would have enough money by the end of the month to cover my expenses. Even though I still have about 15 more months left of my debt free journey, I sleep so much better now just knowing my written plan has everything covered, and all I have to do is follow the plan. I really appreciate these mid-week money chats. Gives me the encouragement and motivation to keep going.❤
Hello from Ontario Canada. So grateful to be debt free. Simple living always keeping in mind most of the worlds population does not have all that we do.
Peace of mind is priceless- our extended family still make fun of us for living like we're "poor" because waiting until we actually have the money rather than using credit seems so strange to them....I think it's the opposite and you're poor if you are using credit because it means you can't afford it!
I am retiring next week at age 55. I have been watching your videos for quite some time now and you’ve really helped changed my mindset about frugal living.
I completely agree that wealth is from financial freedom, and the stress reduction that comes with it. I also agree that it doesn't take a lot in life to find joy. The basic creature comforts that many take for granted, we appreciate. Maybe it's because we put a lot of our own blood sweat and tears into making our property into what it is today, our home.😊
I was shocked to receive a 12% increase in salary yesterday that goes into effect next month. That will really super power my debt repayment. I realize I’m very fortunate. I never imagined I’d make this amount. Great video, as always. And yes, my spending is staying the same. And once I’m debt free later this year, I’ll stuff savings, and then I’ll add more to retirement savings.
Nice video today. You encourage all of us. I have been debt free and on a very tight budget for 30+ years, and I know where each and every cent goes.( I am still working on my mortgage). I took a deep breath when you mentioned haircuts. Even though I budget for my haircuts and carefully schedule them, I STILL have a moment when I schedule my haircuts, due to flashbacks to when I had more month than money. No telling why haircuts are my trigger.😊. I love Ramsey, as well. The entire Ramsey team is so encouraging. Why do I STILL have a mortgage?? Great question- my family got hit by a drunk driver who had no insurance and I had to refinance and start from zero at that point. I am so delighted that we all LIVED that I am grateful to God each and every time I make a mortgage payment. It will be paid off in about three years, so it will still happen- just not according to my plan. All of this to say that even if your financial plans change, you can still prevail..in good time.. Thanks for your terrific videos.
Also, if you have been mindful about your money, and then you are hit with a big wham-dingy, you will be starting from a good place. You will just have to work out of it.
Completely agree with you on the peace of mind. I used to be in debt for years because of being a shopaholic. 5 Years ago I turned everything upside down because I just couldn’t live like that anymore and couldn’t sleep because of the debt. Now I have paid off all the debt and have a good amount of money in my savings account. I live on social security so I don’t have much money coming in every month but I found that I don’t need all that much. I just have to follow my budget and still can save a bit of money every month.
Hi Jane and Mike- greetings from northern USA. I enjoy all your posts and videos. Gratitude,as you mentioned and peace of mind is what brings joy to life. I enjoy seeing different places in France through your day trips. And your quilting is fun! Love the doggos!!
Thank goodness, I love cooking. I am mostly plant based ( a bit of fish & dairy), so whole foods are my usual diet. So inexpensive as compared to processed and prepared foods. I do try to eat out about once a month to support two of our very local restaurants.
I was eating whole food plant based for about 5 years. I now eat a little turkey and chicken along with dairy. You are right....when you don't eat a lot of meat or processed foods it really keeps grocery costs down.
Thanks for sharing the keys to your success. My husband and I have been raising 8 children on one income. But as you said, the peace of mind is worth the hard work.
Excellent video, Jane! Thank you. You are such a content person, being thankful for food, clothing, shelter, warmth. I especially loved your points about having a buffer and saving for more than a year for the next project at times. Have a restful evening!
I made double and triple mortgage payments until I could pay it off in one fell swoop - two years before retiring. Then took a look at my projected pension income, and adjusted my automatic deductions to roll all but that amount into savings (Roth, Traditional 401k, HSA, regular savings). I wanted to be sure I was content with that budget and I always had the option to change it up. It's worked out well, and greatly reduced stress. Before and after retirement.
I wish more people realised that budgeting does not equal deprivation. For me, budgeting equals me being able to do exactly what I want, like my upcoming four week holiday to Europe. Without my reverse budget, where I save first and then use what is leftover, I would not be going anywhere 😊
Thankyou once again Jane and Michael. I always create a small buffer in my monthly food budget. This is because I generally shop on the same day each week and over the year we have 4 'five week' months. This covers it. Peace of mind!❤
Great reminders to stay the course with budgeting. We’ve found getting our budget pinned down took some time before we were accurately predicting 99% of our expenses for a given month or pay period. But because we’ve been budgeting we’re more aware of where every dollar goes and better able to anticipate those expenses that used to sneak up on us. All that to say to others, if you are new to budgeting don’t beat yourself up if you don’t get it right immediately. It’s a skill that is refined over time with consistent effort. And it is worth that effort. I really enjoy your practical advice on this channel.
Just shared this with my son age 38 who is married with 4 sons, ages 5 to 17 years. We recently had a conversation about budgeting and figuring out finances. I like the way you explain the ways you use money to work for you. Thank you for these videos. 😊
Love you, it's so nice to know people that is happy and stress free. You didn't see that much anymore. I'm very content with our lives also. Keep up the good work.
Your comment about feeling wealthy really hit home. When we are careful about our money that attitude pays us back with peace of mind. We are definitely RICH in the best sense of the word!
Hello from Spain! Great video as always. Nothing can compare to the peace we achieved when we finished paying our mortgage not having any debt is a great sensation. It would be great if you could share how you organize your new freezer and stock it in one of your videos. As always, I run the ads twice as my only way to thank you- Have a good week, Jane and Mike!
You are my frugality cheerleader! Thank you both for your inspiring videos. Between you and Dave Ramsey I feel I have a Frugality Committee rooting for me.
Yes Jane, peace of mind is everything. Nothing like being able to sleep at night. In my case, I found my willingness to compromise along the way helped enormously and it paid off in the end. I agree that knowing everything has been accounted for beforehand is a good feeling and enables you to spend without feeling guilty. Thanks again to you both for sharing this video. 🤗
Following you for quite a while now (from Ireland). Absolutely love your philosophy around living “the good life”. Look forward to all your vlogs. Thank you ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
I watch them from northern Ireland and i agree they r living the dream in france although i feel equally lucky too living in ireland with its beautiful majestic scenery its just a pity about the weather.... to be fair it has heated up but the rain just doesnt appear to want to stop i think god turned the tap.on and forgot to turn it off ha ha px
I love to see you both so successful at this and happy doing it! You deserve every good thing and have put your sweat and strength into this! I am proud of you both! 👍
Hi Jane! I'm in my early 30s, watching your vids from the Far East and fervently making mental notes of your tips! I just love them all and could relate to most of them (aside from the grocery vids😂) . I am guilty of not having a written budget as childrearing and tedious work take up my energy most days, but we somehow manage to meet our savings goals all because of you, and a handful of finance youtubers who encourage me to live simply (but not too cheaply at the cost of my principles 😊). Thank you so much for being such an inspiration! I hope to be like you someday!
A budget is like a safe place, a clear orientation and a blanket that you may use really often or whenever you need it. Back in the recession of 08 and onwards, I lived with very little money for a long time and once I started to work steadily a little over 10 years ago I have never looked back. I've always budgeted and I have lived with no debt my whole adult life. It's been a life saver, and I won't quit, let me tell you. Awesome content as always. ❤❤❤❤❤❤
Really enjoy your videos! I waited a bit late in life to start saving but, my pension allowed me to retire at 61. I still sub occasionally at the school district I retired from, and that gives me my “project” money. We’re not doing any exotic trips abroad, but I truly love my life as a retired person.
I love that you focus on the positive aspects of being on a budget. A glass half full approach is a very happy way to live so it’s not about what you can’t buy, it’s about what you can buy. I also like the game of making things fit into my budget. It’s fun when you find a great sale on a certain cut of meat at the supermarket and try a new recipe with it. It’s fun to see that you came in under budget on your discretionary spending and celebrating a bit. Exercised self control promotes confidence in our ability to cope with anything.
Thanks Jane and Mike for another helpful video. I appreciate you sharing your thoughts, experiences and journey with us each week. Best wishes from USA
Good evening. Wise words. And so very true. Being Grateful for what we have. We all see what's going on around the world with its conflicts and miserable conditions of living for millions of people. Everyones budget is different, but I think it's always good to have one and do the best to stick to it. Peace of mind in unexpected moments( which happens to all) is priceless.
We recentle had to have a new soaker hole put in our yard (when there is no mains sewerage etc you have this for overflow of water) and also new tyres on my car so without those extra funds we would have been in trouble as all up the bill was 5.500 plumber and 600 for tyres.
We really all should appreciate what we have. I am encouraging my sons to do the same! I am fortunate to be a stay at home mum - something that my boys take for granted. I really don't mind making the sacrifices financially to enable me to be able to do so. I enjoy the challenges of frugal living and totally understand why you say the same. It gives me a great sense of achievement to know that everything we have, we have worked hard for over the years. Thank you for the motivation! I am enjoying your channel. 🏡🏡🙏🙏
Love your videos. Always look forward to them. I think peace of mind that comes from freedom from debt outweighs the instant gratification of acquiring things that often give us pleasure for a brief time. Living simply is a lifestyle worth cultivating 😊
Thank you for sharing your thoughts. I've been watching some of your older videos. They are quite inspiring. I've already been able to cut down my hours at a toxic job because I'm good with my money. Need to work minimum amount of hours to retain benefits including heath insurance. Health is not allowing me to change jobs or pick up an additional one. You look totally different with your hair down. It's beautiful
Really enjoyed this video 😊 I love your honesty. I always cook budget friendly meals at home, its crazy how much people spend on takeaway coffees and meals out! X
My husband and I live the same way. It is very freeing. My husband still works full time and I work part time . We are in our early 60s . The only issues we are medial insurance when we retire. {We live in the USA}
Hello Mike and Jane! This video just hit the nail on the head. We have sinking funds going now and boy has it made the difference. The credit union sent me a bill for $934 which is the shortfall in our escrow at the bank for taxes and insurance. I paid that off right away with savings I had. We are also taking our vehicle to Honda on Friday for some maintenance that will cost around $300 but no problem. That money is reserved in our sinking fund. I have learned so much from your channel and I thank you. We were doing ok but I just realized we could do better. By the way Jane your hair looks lovely down.
This was a really interesting and informative video thank you. I admire the fact that you both could retire early and pursue your dreams. I totally agree agree with your feelings of being "wealthy" because if you are able to live in a stress free and relaxed manner in todays competitive world you are indeed wealthy beyond imagination. Hope this makes sense.
A very big yes to peace of mind. i was watching a news report about UK families yesterday. The figures suggested around 5 million UK families live with a "negative budget", which wasn't just in the red by a few £s each month, but by several hundreds. An example was a family with one daughter with a medical condition, finding themselves over £460 down a month after just basic costs were taken out. Also, that families would need to work a minimum of an additional 19 hours to get out of the negative budgeting situation. Many more don't have savings. Obviously I cannot comment on their historical situation, but it is often the case that many get trapped in a cycle of poverty, they don't simply overspend. Very very difficult for so many.
They surely are in a state of precariousness. The time to fix the roof is when the sun is shining which is advice far too late for people who got in debt prior to the cost of existence crisis
I think i was frugal from the day i was born i have never been in debt i have never had a credit card and it would scare the life out of me not being in control . I am 50 this year and unless i have some sort of mid life crisis and throw caution to the wind i will continue this way .. my 3 teenage daughters aged 19 18 an 16 r totally the opposite so i obviously failed to instill it in them 😣 but i still have time to turn it around. Live you i am very happy i love learning new hints and tips that you and mike have put in place. I personally believe u r living the dream px
For those people who say, "I could never live on a tight budget, and besides, I'm too deep in debt. It will hardly make a dent to live so frugally," my response is simple. You can live on far less than you think. As far as being deep in debt, the time is going to pass anyway, whether you make an attempt to pay down your debts or you don't. At the end of 2024, you could be that much closer to being debt free -- or you could let the financial current sweep you into even deeper debt. It's your choice.
Hi Jane. I have a question for you. What subject(s) did you teach in High School? In the US teachers usually teach a specific subject. Also, my husband and I feel the same way about wealth. True wealth is peace, security, good home cooked meals, loved ones, a safe place to sleep and running water.
Thank you very much for another inspiring and encouraging video. I find all the tips very helpful and simply do it( with some personal twist). I wonder if it's handy to have more bank-accounts, e.g. an extra for long term savings (for a car), or different "pots" in one saving account. Can it be helpful to "block" saved money by putting them on a special bank account that is "closed" for a year? Simply does any form of banking encourage/discourage saving spirit... At least that's my personal dilemma.
I'm curious, were you and ypur husband always like minded about saving $ and sticking to a budget? It took us a few years, and pretty good debt to both be on the same page moneywise. We are now older and totally debt free (thank you, Dave Ramsey). Wish we had learned sooner.
I am retired and stay home much of the time. Today was very busy out and about. I appreciate having a cozy, warm, decorated place to return after a such a day.
We never forget how lucky we are

Thanks
We really all should appreciate what we have. I am encouraging my sons to do the same! I am fortunate to be a stay at home mum - something that my boys take for granted. I really don't mind making the sacrifices financially to enable me to be able to do so. I enjoy the challenges of frugal living and totally understand why you say the same. It gives me a great sense of achievement to know that everything we have, we have worked hard for over the years. Thank you for the motivation! I am enjoying your channel. 🏡🏡🙏🙏
Thank you
Love your videos. Always look forward to them. I think peace of mind that comes from freedom from debt outweighs the instant gratification of acquiring things that often give us pleasure for a brief time. Living simply is a lifestyle worth cultivating 😊
Thanks
Thank you for sharing your thoughts. I've been watching some of your older videos. They are quite inspiring. I've already been able to cut down my hours at a toxic job because I'm good with my money. Need to work minimum amount of hours to retain benefits including heath insurance. Health is not allowing me to change jobs or pick up an additional one. You look totally different with your hair down. It's beautiful
Thanks for your feedback
👍 👌
Really enjoyed this video 😊 I love your honesty. I always cook budget friendly meals at home, its crazy how much people spend on takeaway coffees and meals out! X
Absolutely!!
And everyone!
You really make such sense. Thanks for this video I enjoyed it.
Glad it was helpful!
Currently on our journey. Thanks for the inspiration.
You got this!
My husband and I live the same way. It is very freeing. My husband still works full time and I work part time . We are in our early 60s . The only issues we are medial insurance when we retire. {We live in the USA}
It's an enslaving system
Hello Mike and Jane! This video just hit the nail on the head. We have sinking funds going now and boy has it made the difference. The credit union sent me a bill for $934 which is the shortfall in our escrow at the bank for taxes and insurance. I paid that off right away with savings I had. We are also taking our vehicle to Honda on Friday for some maintenance that will cost around $300 but no problem. That money is reserved in our sinking fund. I have learned so much from your channel and I thank you. We were doing ok but I just realized we could do better. By the way Jane your hair looks lovely down.
I'm so glad that everything turned out well for you
You inspire me! Thank you for a great video.
You're welcome
Well done to you both. Great inspiration 😊
Thanks so much! 😊
We are basically the same here xx
Here for the premier!
Thanks for the encouragement!
Thanks for watching
This was a really interesting and informative video thank you. I admire the fact that you both could retire early and pursue your dreams. I totally agree agree with your feelings of being "wealthy" because if you are able to live in a stress free and relaxed manner in todays competitive world you are indeed wealthy beyond imagination. Hope this makes sense.
It does make sense and thank you
Im a big fan. Now i want to go back & see some of your earliest videos. -curious about your property improvements.
Lots of videos about that. Have fun scrolling back through our story.
Keep trying Paula
Thank you very much a beautiful video
Thank you very much!
Thanks for your support
Hello Jane and Mike🖐️
Hi Laura
100% Correct.
Your videos are so inspiring! Thank you.
Thanks
Inspiring thank you 😊
You are so welcome!
Lovely content.💜
Thank you
👍👍👍
~ You’ve got such lovely hair.
Yes! Driving along in life without knowlege and control is planning to spin out of control and crash.
Good analogy
Hi Jane. I have a question for you. What subject(s) did you teach in High School? In the US teachers usually teach a specific subject. Also, my husband and I feel the same way about wealth. True wealth is peace, security, good home cooked meals, loved ones, a safe place to sleep and running water.
I taught English. Thanks for watching.
We have four bank accounts with only one fee. All accessible in case of need
Happiness for me has always been living below one's means. It seems that way for both of you.
Thanks rosemary
I'm curious, were you and ypur husband always like minded about saving $ and sticking to a budget? It took us a few years, and pretty good debt to both be on the same page moneywise. We are now older and totally debt free (thank you, Dave Ramsey). Wish we had learned sooner.
We were always in agreement. We always shared everything and thought the combination was one income.
Teachers are also woefully underpaid in the U.S. as well.
They’re undervalued everywhere
I need to get my fireplace working again. Thanks for the great video
Greetings from Ontario Canada. I so agree, debt free and simple living. Blessed to have all that we need. Most people in the world dont.
You’re right on both parts.
Your videos are so inspiring! Thank you.
You are so welcome!
