Hey there, fellow flutists and music enthusiasts! Welcome to my flute masterclass, where I'm excited to share with you a more engaging way to practice musical scales on the flute that goes beyond looking at a bunch of black dotes on a page. In this scales video series , we'll be exploring the magical world of rhythm and the Circle of 5ths, transforming our routine scale exercises into an adventure filled with different kinds of music!
If you want to jump straight to the scale practice, check out the time stamps below, or keep listening for a little more information on this scales approach.
Today we will be focusing on level 1 where we will play up to 2 sharps in a scale for one octave, with different expressive musical backgrounds. This scale exercise is for those who already know the fingering on the flute up to C3, and who want to master their scales in the quickest time possible.
If you can't yet read music, don't worry! One of the most important things when learning an instrument is getting a feel for rhythm, and a sense for musical keys and how they feel in your body and on your instrument which will enable you to identify what key any piece of music is in and therefore more quickly be able to play along to that piece of music.
Yes, learning music notation is important, but not at first when you are trying to get a good sound, get your fingers moving and gain breath control.
Over the years of teaching flute to hundreds of students, one thing has stuck out to me, and that is if a student does not know their scales and has no sense of the feeling within of what it means to play in the key of g major or f major or what ever key is that relates to the piece of music we are talking about, there is a fundamental disadvantage when it comes to how fast they will progress and improve their flute playing.
So I am on a mission to help my students and anyone else out there who wants an enjoyable way of learning scales, in the most time efficient way.
mundane, but I knew they were essential for my growth as a flutist. So I practiced all the different ways of playing scales, but looking back, I could have been way more efficient with my time.
Scales are an opportunity to not only improve finger technique, but also sound, rhythm and theory and over all musical understanding.
So in this scales series, I'll show you how you can not only learn the key signatures of your scales (without knowing music notation), but also how you can bring musical expression into your scale with a play along accompaniment which explores a variety of musical styles and feelings.
So, grab your flute, and let's embark on this musical adventure together.
Now before we begin, there are two ways you can approach these scales. The most important thing is embedding these scales into the muscle memory of your body-so you're not just thinking mentally about what notes are in the scale, but you're FEELING the scale in your body. Music is about getting out of your head, and into your body and emotions. But if you're constantly wondering what note should come next, you're in your head. So, that is ONE major reason to learn these scales by memory through feel.
So let's go. Working with the circle of 5ths, we'll start on C major and A minor, then G Major E min, D major and B minor. These scales start with no sharps, then add a sharp for each scale up to D. Try and stay in time with the beat.
