I walked over a field in the moonlight with this song playing. It was my first time hearing it. The grass gently swayed as this song took me to a different place entirely. What an experience!
I have done something similar! I used to listen to this album on my walks to work at 6am in the morning, during Winter in the UK when it's pitch black and this song can transport you to another place definitely. Amazing song.
This album was wayyyy before it’s time. Totally underrated!!! It’s a masterpiece! Thrice did something different than their previous stuff and people didn’t give them enough credit.
Dustin recounted the track's origins: "It's really surprising the response we have gotten with that song. We didn't see it as a focal track initially. We sat around and made a storyline about a person diving at night and the things that he saw. We storyboarded the whole song and what was happening in the song. A guy is on a boat in the beginning. When the drums kick in he dives into the ocean in old scuba gear (the 20,000 Leagues bubble-head), then he sinks into the water as the song develops. He witnesses a sperm whale fighting a giant squid, as an observer to what is happening, but not a participant. The creatures and world around him don't even notice him. The vocoder part later in the song he ends up running into these sirens and it seems very peaceful, but then it turns very bad. He is caught up in a threatening situation, yet somehow he makes it back to the surface after nearly losing consciousness. There is a moment you can hear near the end of the song that sounds like emerging from the water. He comes back to the still surface, to the night, and recalls all he witnessed. Things like this song are what made doing this album ourselves so enjoyable."
Can anyone tell me what the guitar tone is called? The soft plucky parts, not the heavy part. I can't get enough of it and want to find other songs like it.
I wish they'd tell them afterwards what the songs about or even like print out the lyrics in English for them afterwards and have them talk about if that changes their opinion or if the video makes more sense that way. Just a thought.
The story behind this song is really hard to piece together, but ive spent a lil time on it. My conclusion as to the meaning of this song is the TITLE. Lol

Thrice definitely has these transportive / transcendent qualities I’ve experienced it. Works esp well at night lol

Agreed 1000 percent.

The only instrumental song by Thrice, and one of my absolute favorites from them!
As the ruin falls?
Edit: the next day
Opaque acoustic

I love Dustin's voice and lyricism to death, but this song speaks volumes as an instrumental. It's perfect.

There seems to be a lot of overlap with Thrice and Final Fantasy fans. Favorite band, and favorite series. :)

That sound comes from a technique called palm muting. And the fast plucking is called staccato.
I like postrock and thrice 👍
