Thank you for this. I’m American and enjoy seeing how other cultures spend their family time. Your meal looked much more intensive than ours. Looks delicious. Is this a typical menu? We generally just have something like potato ( different ways) and a vegetable or meat. Many times just one dish, perhaps spaghetti, lasagna, chili, or just a salad with many options. Family meals have changed a lot in 50 years. We used to have family around the table together, but now most just eat whenever we feel like it, not at the table.
The food is always about the same as normal except, we have big fish, abalone, dry japanese mushroom... And mainly expensive stuff that we only eat during Chinese New year, and it contribute by family members. And my parent cook, best taste ever!
Only during Chinese New year, similar to thank giving dinner .. instead of buy gift, we give redpack that have money, we don't have gift card in Malaysia

I don't think you can't find bats to eat in Malaysia anymore,I did heard someone eat bat like when I was like 12years old, that is like 40years ago. They say it taste like chicken..
Penang at one time is famous for dog herber soup, now if you kill a dog in Penang, I believe you will get fine, and a lot of dog lover will make you life very difficult.
