I've been listening to this for over 50 years and it still brings me joy! You can find it on the album Collaboration: The Modern Jazz Quartet With Laurindo Almeida
Unlike so many recordings from this era, this song was played live. Milt Jackson makes a tiny mistake at 1:10 that wouldn't have been on any recording. These guys are AMAZING musicians, and whoever their sound engineer was deserves kudos as well!
I just heard this Beautiful rendition of "Fugue in A minor" of Johann Sebastian Bach interpreted by Modern Jazz Quartet & Laurindo Almeida.♫♪♫ on WBGO 88.3FM (September 28th.,2020) 10:16 am. in New York./// Great Music, Classic and Jazz.!!! Thanks Gracias.
I'd imagine that Bach would have totally disagreed with Andre Previn when he said (during an interview with Jazz pianist Oscar Peterson), "I don't like people who added Jazz to Classical music. Of course Previn, was referring to (without mentioning him), French musician Jacques Loussier, who put Jazz improvisation into Bach. As we know, Bach as a (Baroque Era) composer, was famously known to be a great improviser.
Why is Jimi Hendrix always #1 on greatest guitar lists? I love some of his music, and respect him, but he was an amateur compared to Laurindo Almeida. Laurindo was a true genius.
I don't agree with categorization amateur or not. Every musician i s amateur at some instrument. Jimi Hendrix had a very good musical vision, which made him a great musician. And as musician he was not an amateur. Being musician is much more than just technique and having studied music in a school. These can be useful tools for some musicians, but they don't define how good a musician is.
MJQ played this fugue for European audiences often. If Jackson made an error on this song, I thought it was an interval error rather than the wrong note but I could be wrong. The extra difficulty here is having a fifth partner and getting everyone on the same page.

Less the limey introduction this is remarkable. The Modern J.Q I thought were always very different to their sixties contemporaries.
Amazing..
The man introducing this sphercal music is a bitter fellow, probablyenvious of fantastic musicans. MJQ RULES.
leo hog SHOW THAT FUCKIN LIMEY THE DOOR!
your ignorant bias shows
1;10........Is there `a mistake `in jazz?
too bad the balance engineer forgot to mic the rhythm section, lo. at least on my computer, almost inaudible.
