Marc's 'Blue Horse I' has long been one of my favorite paintings, created by one of my favorite artists. His paintings' transition of expression, due to the social/political situation in Europe at the time, is remarkable. Thank you!
As someone who watches Baumgaterner restoration, I really appreciate the man who restored the painting like that.
I remember we had a school assignment back in the day, to try and replicate great piece of art in other medium than in was originally greated. I used pastel chalks, and replicated Fraz Marc's the Large Blue Horses. I didn't know a thing about him, I just found a picture of the painting in one of the resources we had, and could not stop looking at it, so from all the options, I chose it. It was so simple, but somehow I was just totally mesmerized by it, and I still can't quite tell why. It jjust simply is.
This gave me chills. Franz Marc has been an artist I’ve admired for years, and his work continues to influence my own art. Thank you for such an insightful video.

Good question! Franz and others were considered degenerate during WWII by the Nazis. In WWI however, Franz wasn't labelled degenerate by the government as Germany wasn't Nazi yet.
The Nazis, being obviously very militaristic, had a lot of respect for WWI soldiers (especially those who died during the war). Franz Marc was one of those sacrifices, so the Nazis went back on their decision of humiliating him.

The paintings in the Blue Horses series look very intetesting and besutiful, and the next ones are very shocking.
A shame he died so young, specially for a st***ip war.
The German Army actually called back Franz Marc and many other artists to prevent them from fighting and eventually dying. Unfortunately, the orders to bring Marc back to Germany came in too late.
It's a shame that so many artists die young.

To my database of "greatest paintings" I added Foxes.
I searched all over the internet and could not find anywhere to download the battlefront sketchbook showed at the beginning of this video
due to a series of volcanic eruptions in the period 1883 - 1920, the late 1800s and the early 1900s had fire-red sunrises and sunsets only rarely were the skies deep blue at dawn or just after sunset, and just in this period, many painters had a fascination with the color blue when the fire-red skies at sunrise and sunset slowly dissipated after the 1920s so also slowly did the fascination with the color blue disappear in painters circles.
also, many of the sunrises/sunsets painted at the time were fire-red but that goes without saying.
What would he have created if he had survived the war I wonder. I don’t think anyone had mixed nature and abstraction like he did in his last works.
