Did you ever see them live? I guess not. I once saw Minutemen and Husker Du play in NYC and try to blow each other off the stage. Wow Early 80's were a golden age for underground music. We had no chance of success, so it was pure
You're right. I've spent considerable time analyzing (enjoying) their approach and what I tend towards is this: They were 3 very committed people, at least two of them naturally artistic in songwriting and visual arts (musically none of them are at a virtuoso level, but that matters not in rock and roll, they are incredibly good at putting across their concept and then making it personal, and crushing it--and GREG flew like no other bassist EVER), however, what the Huskers have is an undeniably peppy and dramatic rhythm section backing them up. That appeals to the human heart. Theirs was an equation that superseded all others. The fury, the pace, the melody, the intensity, the visuals, etc. In the music world they are just as important as Led Zep or Hendrix or A-smith or REM. They unlocked mysteries of the musical atom that no one else ever would have. Nobel Prize winners to me.
@@GotLotsaFaith Well said. All of them play their instruments well considering they came from punk and hardcore. Bob has his own style, Greg could play incredibly fast with fingers and Grant could play fast drums while singing in an intense way
The Flying V & Apologize This might be the best-ever husker video out there on the web. It depicts them at their halcyon-- in 1985 (just look at Bob's golden locks!), it features, in my opinion perhaps the best rock n' roll song of the 20th century (in the 2nd millennium for that matter :) and the band just seems to be in a feeding-frenzy along with the rowdy audience. This, to me, is just tops. Tops. Nothing better will ever be made in the rock industry, it's just not in the cards anymore.
I unfortunately tuned in to this band about a year after they broke up. I did see Bobs Workbook and Black Sheets of Rain tours and Grants Nova Mob shows. All good but Husker Du's music is a foundational brick in my musical influence. Even 25 years later, I am still moved by the melodic fury this band produced....This is a good quality video too. Definitely in their prime.
His fingers and attitude, first. Then some distortion+ pedal, fender & yamha gear, a touch of compression... and the all-out playing. Funny how he doesn't even look like he is trying very hard... Legends!
The way Bob and Greg are jumping on stage while playing... clearly shows this must have been one of THEIR FAVORITE songs, even though Bob never acknowledged Grant's songwriting. Legends!
I cannot believe how good these songs (esp. I Apologize) are. I cannot believe how good Husker Du were. This video is a lot better than I expected, and I want more. Thank you for posting! P.S. New Day Rising = most underrated album ever.
Not sure if I would have made it through high school relatively intact without the 5 Husker Du tapes I was able to order through my tiny town's tiny record store. That Flying V should be in the rocknroll hall of fame.
@@bradoozy he does, actually. He stopped playing them on the road after Hüsker Dü split but who knows if he used his Flying Vs on a recording or plays them privately sometimes.
OMG: Bob's curly blond locks ... He looks like a drill sergeant in the U.S. Marines, or an Admiral at sea, commanding a nuclear submarine ... unstoppable... The magic of a band becoming themselves... reminds me of Dylan in '65 when he toured London for the second time, and was adored by all.... 'sermonizing while the audience was lost in song' etc. etc. I'm not sure rock 'n' roll will ever know a greater nucleus as the great Huskers.... "It's your turn to look me in the eyes ..." God bless
To get that sound, You need a MXR Distortion Plus running into a DBX 166 compressor. Put that final sound into a tube amp like a Fender. A humbucker guitar like his Ibanez Flying V copy as well.
been a fan of this band for years . but the first time I have seen any live footage ,it captures the bands spirit brilliantly .noise, power and beauty!!
Sure, the music is great. So great it’s iconic and can represent a snapshot of time in history during some groundbreaking musical moments. But can we pause for a moment and appreciate the bass players superb mustache?
Yeah, they were my favorite punk band ever. Broke up right before I was going to see them for the first time. Ballsy as hell and still had a sense of melody.
I'm a huge fan but only got into the Huskers after they broke up. I never saw them live and only wish I could go back in a time machine and see them live ! They were the BEST and this video proves it!
These guys should get back together, even though they can't stand one another. They were the best.I've been listening to them since they came out and I'm 46 now and they still kick ass...fast,intense and too cool for words.
Husker Dü é uma banda simplesmente inexplicável, ou se pode ser explicada, é definida como algo sútil, suave, poderoso, rápido, barulhento e muito lindo.
I saw Husker Du countless times at the 7th st. entry and in the mainroom around this time, and they literally went from thriple time thrash outfit in the Entry to gradually, yet suddenly, this mindblowing powerhouse of melody. The pit would explode into frenzy from the first note, and I even started sitting some songs out because I was getting injured.
Couldn't agree more, Denapz... I saw that Bowie (try to) cover MCRs Under Pressure (the killer duet with The Used) and it was like seeing your uncle after he drinks too much... it was embarassing for everyone in the room. No one knew where to look or what to do with their hands.
It's called "The Cyclone". 2 people cross wrists and grab hands, spin fast and let go, flying into people. I did that many many times at that vey location. First Ave rocks!
i have been aware of u tube for a year now least acrimonious site yet. that says it all. husker du broke up right before they were to play in omaha, thank god i saw the replacement's 3x's at the drumstick. both bands were trancendent.
They were a great band! Was fortunate enough to have seen them several times. I do wish for a reunion, just to relive the excitement and pure adrenalin rush I used to get. Thanks for the vid
back in the day i followed bands like the; kinks, stones, zep and the who, it lead to bands like pistols, ramones, x and clash that lead to bands like huskers, naked raygun, Social D then on to nirvana, sound garden, green day, offspring etc. God knows why those guys in the 80s weren't recognized when it was arguably one of the best times in rock n roll history.
Strangely Bob reli looks older here than what he is now... 'Half man half lager' was to b sayed about him in those days.. :P I love Huskers! And dis is at their best!
@tracehazarrrrd good call. I read once that Kurt played in a Creedence covers band when he was 15 ....if thats true they're probably an influence - hooks and riffs. .... I think Sabbath Bloody Sabbath was an influence too - heavy melodies !
If I wasn't already familiar with Hüsker Dü and therefore knew who Grant Hart was, I'd swear that that was comedian Mitch Hedberg (fellow Minnesotan, incidentally) behind the kit!
Let me get this, er, straight. To praise a band consisting of an openly gay man, an openly bi man, and a man confident enough to sport a raging mustache, you're using the term gay to discredit a very different band. Wow.
Am I wrong to say that Husker Du did what Nirvana was trying to do long before they even though of it? I hear all these pixies comparisons, but it was truly Husker Du, and maybe The Who, who really influenced Nirvana's entire persona. Loud soft isn't the revolution of Nirvana, it was making emotional, true, rock from the heart relevant and in the mainstream again. Just my opinion, love all those bands, peace.
I know I'm responding a little late, but it's not just your opinion, but it's also Dave Grohl's opinion. I'd have to dig for the actual wording of the comment, but it was something along the lines of "I don't know what the big deal is (about Nirvana). Husker Du did it first." With Dave doing a ton of show with Bob, at the very least there is a ton of respect between the two to this day.
love the pixies but I don't hear them in nirvana. I was trying to go old school in saying the who, that they are the most seminal influence. replacements were sort of constricted to their style of songwriting in my opinion, but their vocalist sure fits in with nirvana's sound. wipers kind of. I f*cking love wipers' first album, godly, thanks for reminding me.
Bigman, they were INSANE live.Bob stopped the show because of too much slamming. Eventually resumed playing (after leaving the guitars next to amps in super feedback mode for 10 mins or so.) They played Warehouse (most of it) which I hadn't bought yet, but it was still amazing.
guess that Bob Mould was one of the first to ironically use a Flying V guitar. how would anyone even dare to mention G. D. in a context with the Huesker
everyone should just grow a pair and stop caring what green day does. dont worry about the, let them do what they want. they're a great band, keeping rock in the music these days. sure they've lost some of their style, but they keep doing whatever they want to do and really don't care what anyone thinks of them.
My problem is, that wonderful noise drowns out all vocals and the rest of the band to a certain degree. Even the producers didn`t clean that up during recording on any of their LP`s. SST or other. Sugar got it right. Bob uses minimal, basic stomps but it all comes down to the amp and settings. The volume & tone controls on any axe he played were never backed off for any reason. Rare use of bridge pickup. In Bob`s world, more is better. There you have it. I`d love a remastered HD box set.
drinkin and stinkin' on heaven hell whiskey in the jar right now reminds me of sally maclenane by the pogues or and it stoned me by van the man morrison
I think that there are a lot of similarities, but Husker Du didn't do that loud-quiet stuff as much--mostly it was just loud! (tho they did have their odd quiet moments)
A drumset. Two or three simple guitar and bass amps. Massive energy. Blows any other band away. I'm fascinated
HD are my beatles. I enjoy you enjoyed 'em too.

R.I.P. Grant Hart. Terrible to hear of his passing, thanks so much for everything!
Yea, I'm very sad too, especially since they said they were contemplating getting back together...
O no,no please,say this is fake news!!
Greg Norton is a badass
I unfortunately tuned in to this band about a year after they broke up. I did see Bobs Workbook and Black Sheets of Rain tours and Grants Nova Mob shows. Flying Vs are Gibson.
RIP Grant :(
Such a powerful performance by these 3 guys; probably watched this 500 times or more.
Gotta say this is probably my 200th or so time watching this clip alone by now
The way Bob and Greg are jumping on stage while playing... clearly shows this must have been one of THEIR FAVORITE songs, even though Bob never acknowledged Grant's songwriting.
Legends!
Arranging guitar parts for Grant’s songs seems like a great acknowledgment to me.
LOL....i was in the middle of all that!!! one of the best gigs ever...i was deaf for 2 days after!!
Do you happen to remember if this is from the early or late show? Thank you.
I cannot believe how good these songs (esp. I Apologize) are. I cannot believe how good Husker Du were. This video is a lot better than I expected, and I want more. Thank you for posting! P.S. New Day Rising = most underrated album ever.
I think they started this show with New Day Rising. I hope more footage surfaces this decade. R.I.P. Grant Hart
Not sure if I would have made it through high school relatively intact without the 5 Husker Du tapes I was able to order through my tiny town's tiny record store. That Flying V should be in the rocknroll hall of fame.
@Google Comrade. as it should be. i’m just wondering if he still has it.
@@bradoozy he does, actually. He stopped playing them on the road after Hüsker Dü split but who knows if he used his Flying Vs on a recording or plays them privately sometimes.

Amazing band! Amazing distortion!!
They look like they're having the fucking times of their lives. So fucking humble - no ego at all. I wish I could've seen them live.

Sure, the music is great. So great it’s iconic and can represent a snapshot of time in history during some groundbreaking musical moments. But can we pause for a moment and appreciate the bass players superb mustache?
Yeah,
they were my favorite punk band ever. Broke up right before I was going to see them for the first time. Ballsy as hell and still had a sense of melody.
this music is timeless...songs and passion.
This and New Day Rising were the first two Du songs I ever heard, I was immediately hooked.

Saw them at Guerrila Gardens in Seattle, ‘85 I believe. They were and are amazing!

He just played the same room last night. 30 yrs later to the day and still kickin ass
The energy is just exploding from every inch of this band and this vid. I have never seen anything that can top it.
This is a beauty!! Huskers at the top of their game; Wish I'd been there...
Amazing this band even existed!!!!
Husker is an acquired taste, like beer scotch and caviar all the good stuff is!
pure delight!! punk-rock at it's finest!
Bad Brains and Husker Du are the two greatest Hardcore bands of all time

I love this stuff, I'm surprised bands aren't staring to cover their songs.
