    I had the problem that my first attempt at the "bmw special tool" was not totally straight and the housings separated, but only 5 mm. Then I built a second "special tool", which was straight and i pressed the housing together for a new start and then it worked. You really don't need that much force to separate them. If it gets hard to turn the splitting tool, stop and try it again.

    What might i be forgetting or doing wrong thats causing the rear housing to be stuck on. I re-created your tool and it just feels way to hard to turn and it doesn't look like its budging. All of the gears are engaged forward as far as i can tell. And ive followed the video pretty well. This is not an ix. Any advice is appreciated and thank you for making this masterpiece

    Hey mate. Thanks for posting this, appreciate the time and effort. I had to find a second hand G280/5, luckily worked fine. Original developed a grinding in reverse and wouldn't go In. Once off car found out 5th and reverse refuse to go in. You've inspired me to strip mine down. Guessing the 280 is similar. Any tips for what I should check and change.
    Many thanks. Deano.

      @85garage  ปีที่แล้ว

      Let me know if the 280 is similar, it should be. I’d check the shift fork and rail for 5th/reverse for damage. That’s usually the problem when you can’t get into a specific gear. Other than that make sure none of the gears and synchros are missing teeth. Replace all the bearings and seal and you’ll be good to go.

    Awesome. My G260 is from something pre-e30, but have it against my M20B29. Almost all my gears grind so i just double clutch everywhere. 1st to 2nd is especially bad, might have to pull mine apart shortly, thanks for the vid.

    Howdy sir idk if your still answer questions, really appreciate your vidoes and the creative work arounds for some of the tools 👌. Having a bit of issue with taking my 260/6 apart. To the point of pulling the back half and its popped off the shaft but seems to be catching up on one of the shift rods. Ive tried a few methods of trying to release them to no avail, any advice? (Should note im taking it apart due to the rear most fork not wanting to move)
    Thanks in advance and hopefully your ol girl is nice and queit now 🤟

    • @85garage
      @85garage  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you sir! Every time I’ve run into that situation it was because either the transmission wasn’t in neutral or it the puller was pushing on the input shaft on an angle. Try to re orient the 3 jaw puller and make sure it’s in neutral and try again. If you force it you can bend the main shift shaft-I’ve done that before. If all else fails make sure you have the plug that holds the detent removed (the thing I pull out with a wood screw).

      @‘85 Garage you were right with the neutral position, moved her from vertical to horizontal and was able to get the forks to move 😉, she's apart and digging into the gear cluster tomorrow 🤟 your doing awesome work man!

    Hey nice vid and awesome work. I noticed this getrag 260 is from the IX. Will An IX 260 work for the non ix 325 if the output flange is swapped over??

    • @85garage
      @85garage  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks. You can convert a rwd g260 to a ix g260 by swapping the back half of an ix unit over to the rwd bellhousing along with the output flange. The bellhousing can’t be from an eta though. Replace the bearings and shim it up for the proper clearances and you’ll be good.

    • @85garage
      @85garage  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks! The length of the arms is about 9-10”. It’s just the 3 piece 3-jaw puller set from harbor freight but I bolted the shorter legs to the longest legged set that comes with the set. www.harborfreight.com/three-jaw-puller-set-3-piece-63953.html

    Hey there, I have a Getrag 265/6 with a broken input shaft. The smooth portion of the shaft that slides into the pilot bearing fractured cleanly. Is there a way to remove the input shaft (I'm guessing disassembly is similar to the G260)?

    Awesome video. I appreciate fixing things rather then swapping. Question though, which springs are controlling the left/right shifter gate respect to neutral? I.e. shifter left your in the 1-2 gear gate, shifter right 3-4, hard left reverse, hard right 5th.
    I have a getrag 250, not the same but quite similar. No one can tell me anything on the forums.

    • @85garage
      @85garage  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you’re referring to the springs under the detent ball plate it’s 1-2, 3-4, 5-R. This is reading left to right if you were facing the back of the transmission at the output shaft. Should be the same for a 250.

    • @alexharitos4495
      @alexharitos4495 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@85garage I'm not sure. I mean which spring is causing the actual shifter left/right slop in neutral, and in gear left/right slop. My reverse gear has spring, and my 5th gear has spring (sticks sometimes), but in neutral i can tell some springs are really worn or broken. The clockwise and counterclockwise selector shaft movement.
      Shifter linkage and bushings are new, so I know it's coming inside the trans.
      Thanks for the reply. There is literally no info online for getrags.

    • @85garage
      @85garage  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@alexharitos4495 I’d check two things before you pull it apart: the detend plug on the side of the case near the bellhousing (The one I remove with a flat head screwdriver and then pull the plunger out with a screw). Check the condition of the spring and the plunger head for wear. Then check the spring in the rear of the case that is held in by a screw plug. Check the spring and plunger for wear. Besides that you’d have to pull the case halves apart and check the mechanism in the back that you see me remove in my video when I replace the output shaft bearing.

    • @85garage
      @85garage  ปีที่แล้ว

      This is assuming it’s all the same for a 250

    I know this video is a little old but hopefully you will still see this. My transmission is stuck in reverse so will it still come apart the same way? Thanks

    • @85garage
      @85garage  ปีที่แล้ว

      What’s most likely going to happened is the case will come apart but right before it splits completely it’s going to get hung up on the main shift rod. You can keep applying pressure to the pulling tool but the main shift rod will bend. You could try putting a punch through the end of the hole on the shift right on the back of the transmission and forcing it out of reverse.

    i have a similar getrag in my car and its popping out of 1st and sometimes 3rd as i release the clutch, if i really force it into 1st it will stay there, otherwise it will pop out almost every time, even if i start it in 1st and then release the clutch it pops out of 1st, could this be an issue with the shift forks inside the transmission? if i put it almost in gear on other gears it will pop out which makes me think something is preventing it from going all the way into 1st

    • @85garage
      @85garage  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Most likely a bent or broken shift fork. That’s a pretty common issue with these. If it’s not a fork it’s a worn synchro on those gears.
