    Synthetic winch cables snap back as well , they also release enough energy to cut a nut sack off but not the same as cable , cable will kill you . Also throwing a towel or sand bags over the middle of it doesn't stop it from recoiling . The safest way to winch is to get everyone away at a safe distance and not standing anywhere between the two vehicles or tree stump etc and if you are the driver be aware at what angle the cable is to the direction of the driver . If it snaps or even bringing a D shackle with it it can cause severe injury or death . Remote wireless winching is the safest way to go.

      I have broken many cables. Never had an issue. They too travel on the ground. The issue is when what you attached to snaps. You have the hook or d ring coming at you and possibly part of the attaching point. That is what kills.

    Lmao. First time I ever used my winch, I was alone on the trail, tried to do the safe thing and threw my sweatshirt on the cable. Was so proud I got myself unstuck, but for the life of me couldn't find my sweatshirt....until I looked at the winch. Only wrapped up a couple times. Luckily I was the only witness. 👍

    Cool idea. You could just make one of those by drilling a hole in a hockey puck or find some sort of large rubber bushing/body spacer, etc. Could also use a cheap Huffy Mtn bike rear suspension coil spring with some sort of rubber jammed inside so the spring wouldn't slide on inclines. Also the spring would compress when the hook is pulled all the way in and give some buffer to not pull the hook into the winch too far.

    One small problem is, while it's up against the fairlead roller it's going to center itself and your cable is going to wrap itself right in the center of the spool. Like anything else, winch operation means you SHOULD BE paying attention to what you're doing.

  • @danburch9989
    @danburch9989 5 ปีที่แล้ว +14

    I would like to see it demonstrated in an actual failure scenario. Would that rubber donut become a projectile at the end the cable? Would the cable pull through the donut leaving it behind?

    Place the hook on the Jeep you're recovering from the bottom up through the d-ring. Not the top down. If the hook fails, it will send the cable to the ground instead of up in the air.

    I had an ATV winch get stripped out because as I pulled the winch in I wasn’t paying attention and the hook hit the rollers and stripped the gears. I looked for ever and found the winch saver and installed it. It works like a charm and gives cushion so it won’t strip again and gives weight for the line. Best money you can spend for your winch.

      Synthetic ropes don't come flying back like steel. They don't retain as much spring power and if they do let go there isn't any weight to them so they tend to just drop to the floor. Its always a good idea anyway though. Belt and braces beats loosing half your face if it comes back through the windscreen
