I am an ELCA Lutheran from South Carolina. It is New Year's Eve. This passage from the Gospel of St. Matthew will most likely be read in churches holding services tonight. And here is hoping that everyone reading this had a Merry Christmas and has a Blessed & Happy New Year.
@@SEBTS You're welcome. We read this on November 24, which was Christ the King Sunday, which is the last Sunday of the Church Year. We read it every three years. Next year, it will be Jesus' conversation with Pontus Pilate in the Gospel of John, then Jesus on the Cross between the two thieves in the Gospel of Luke. I heard a sermon preached on that entitled "Where's the King?!" The minister began by mentioning the old Wendy's commercial (Where's the Beef?) and said that the public couldn't believe that their "King" was hanging on a Cross.
Wow. Well this parable is so tremendously powerful and moving. Beautiful and thought provoking explanation. I always felt this parable truly proved the Catholic position. Now I am not so sure. The good work flows from the Grace. My question: what happens when someone claims to believe but these transformative acts of charity and care are not present. Is that true faith? Well then if not, isn't faith and works tied together somewhat like as expressed by the Catholic Church. The Catholic Church is not a works based faith - it is saved by Grace through faith activated by love. Isn't that intuitive? If works prove faith - then works are in some sense required. I think Protestant thinking requires that we perform God's grace outside of our free will. God somehow turns us into a do-gooding machine. But such a position rejects human freedom which started in the Garden. I welcome comments on this.
Since you asked, here is my reply. I respect Catholics, most of my family are catholic and I was Christened and in my early years attended the Catholic Church. What is true faith? Read the first 10-11 verses of Ephesians 1:1, It is plain to see that faith in Christ comes by the a Grace of God, who by the power of the Holy Spirit renewing our hearts, filling us with His spirit opening our ears and ears to the Gospel message to be saved. And we are saved to then do good works out of love for Christ. Good works are proof we love God and was to joyfully serve Him.
Doubt the Interpretation but he brought out a very good point that we who serve the poor tend to fall into the trap of becoming self righteous & despising the rich & also thinking we are doing more important things than people involved in other ministries
So good! I had this revelation last night when reading Matthew 25 and then found this teaching to further confirm it. The evidence in scripture is compelling. Matthew 5:6 6 “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied. John 21:17 17 He said to him the third time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” Peter was grieved because he said to him the third time, “Do you love me?” and he said to him, “Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you.” Jesus said to him, “Feed my sheep. John 6:35 35 Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst. Matthew 26:26-28 Institution of the Lord's Supper 26 Now as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and after blessing it broke it and gave it to the disciples, and said, “Take, eat; this is my body.” 27 And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he gave it to them, saying, “Drink of it, all of you, 28 for this is my blood of the[a] covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. John 4:31-35 31 Meanwhile the disciples were urging him, saying, “Rabbi, eat.” 32 But he said to them, “I have food to eat that you do not know about.” 33 So the disciples said to one another, “Has anyone brought him something to eat?” 34 Jesus said to them, “My food is to do the will of him who sent me and to accomplish his work. 35 Do you not say, ‘There are yet four months, then comes the harvest’? Look, I tell you, lift up your eyes, and see that the fields are white for harvest. John 4:13-15 13 Jesus said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, 14 but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again.[a] The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” 15 The woman said to him, “Sir, give me this water, so that I will not be thirsty or have to come here to draw water.” The sheep are marked by a changed life. Those who minister to the poor in spirit, help lift up those in the faith that are struggling, they are those who commit to discipleship and fellowship, bearing one another’s burdens and ultimately teach truth.
I so appreciate the heart of this message. And I agree that Jesus doesn’t want us just to serve the poor and disenfranchised and forget about our neighbor, family, co-worker, friend... And I understand his thinking that if it is specifically serving the misfortunate that gets us by on judgment day, why will we be surprised we helped them when that day comes if we in fact helped them? I see how he came to his conclusion that Matthew 25 is not literally meaning the poor, hungry, imprisoned... And he explained it beautifully. But I look at this text and I am not so sure. And we are betting our eternity on how we interpret this. Is it okay to go our whole lives without serving the needy as long as we serve somebody? Keep in mind just as the sheep will be surprised they served Jesus, the goats will be surprised they didn’t.
Yes. The goats said, when did we not do those things? (As far as we know, we did PLENTY of good things!) those good things were not done because God so loved us, they were done because they wanted to “earn” something
Wow, so much self and fluff in this sermon.. Remember this always " Glory Be To God " Preach the message and the word of God - . Let the word guide the message and the spirit within the word move the the people... Let us all keep learning and applying from the best examples we have .. Jesus and his Apostles. God speed to everyone, learn and spread the Gospel. Bless...
Paul explains this in Corinthians he says there are a plethora of different gifts but All The Same Spirit it's all about your calling because if you're doing something that God didn't call you to do you do it in vain and the self-righteous attitude is as simple as somebody who didn't go to church and started to go to church with no significant change. We are our Brother's Keeper and if we see something hinky the Apostle Paul also says we should call them out with two witnesses and have the least among you guys to judge the matter. As iron sharpens iron remember that. The enemy is subtle if it was blatant it wouldn't be as easy for him to pull you into disobedience we must always be conscious of our reasoning behind what we're doing like are we doing it to be seen of men to feed my self-righteous ego or am I doing it for God?
That kingdom activity is available today with gentleness, kindness, and grace to brothers and sisters, initiated by us, as we wait. And, the Rev. verse... that we have a friend, our King, who is knocking at the door, waiting for us to hear the knock, and, to answer. Powerful, and, thank you!! I suggest a playback speed of 1.25 or 1.5 for our friend, Jean Vanier, th-cam.com/video/qUGlIud_Qf4/w-d-xo.html
Christ’s Coming and the Gentile Nations (25:31-46) This section explains to us how Jesus Christ will judge the Gentile nations. The word nations in Matthew 25:32 means “Gentiles,” and it is in the neuter gender in the Greek. The word them in that same verse is in the masculine. This means that the nations will be gathered before Jesus Christ, but He will judge them as individuals. This will not be a judgment of groups (Germany, Italy, Japan, etc.) but of individuals within these nations. We must not confuse this judgment with the Great White Throne Judgment described in Revelation 20:11-15.
How does anyone come to the conclusion that this is a parable??? This is a true time in time a prophecy . Wow , another clueless Baptist made up doctrine .
Yeah this ain't no parable. The sheep's and goats is a real judgment. And it appears, atleast to me, that it takes place prior to the Millennial reign.
Actually its not a parable at all. Matthew 24 and 25 are about the Great Tribulation. In the Tribulation, God focus his attention on Israel once again during those 7 years, the gentile nations will again be judged by how they helped or refuse to help Israel during those 7 years. If you read the passage in Matthew 25:31-46 properly, Jesus was addressing "all the nations" (vs 32), a term which always refers to gentiles. He spoke to them saying those who feed his "brethren" (vs 40), which is a biblical term denoting the Jewish brothers and sisters of Christ, as Jesus was born a Jew. It is for good reason, during the 7 years of Tribulation, or Jacob's trouble, the antichrist will be persecuting all of Israel. Everyone in Israel will have to flee to the mountains and pray that this flight takes place neither in the sabbath nor the winter, as Jesus prophesied. It will thus become the responsibility of gentiles, if they want to be saved, to protect the Jews. For example, if you refuse to offer food, drinks, clothes to the people of Israel who will be persecuted by the antichrist, your faith in Christ alone will not save you (Matthew 25:41-46). So if you are a gentile then, and still want to be considered saved at the end of the Tribulation, it takes more than just faith in Jesus alone.
But Jesus is clearly pointing to a separate group of his "brethren" who were present at the dividing of the sheep and goats. They were either Christians or Jews to be called his "brethren".
Seems like a lot of mental gymnastics to avoid the meaning of the scripture. To me it's totally straightforward. Nations will be held accountable by how they treat those in need among them.
Wow I remember Bob at Christ Community in Omaha 20 years ago but I thought he went into politics with his brother? Hasn't hardly aged a day... Must be his son...
This struck me. I do not believe in the church: in my opinion they are all talk and that mirrors my shortcomings; however I’m gonna start reading to my daughter from the Bible.
As a Christian I believe that Jesus does love everyone. He also loves us enough to not force his way on us. He will let us choose to be sheep... or goats. His love is an offer of salvation but not a guarantee. We must choose to follow Him where he leads us in order to get to where He is going. But all the while He loves us even still
Poor exegesis. Matthew 25:31-46 IS A PROPHECY, NOT A PARABLE! The key is that the people being judged DO NOT KNOW WHY THIS JUDGMENT IS GIVEN! Many millions of Christians today (and through the centuries) believe that their actions toward the downtrodden are EXACTLY what these verses mean. So…how can they be “surprised” by these statements of Jesus? The people here in Matthew 25:31-46 have NO CLUE why Jesus is passing this judgment, and therefore cannot be talking about the multitude of believers (and false believers) who have died thinking that this criteria is how they will be evaluated! Matthew 25:31-46 is referring to those STILL ALIVE at the 2nd coming of Jesus who have never heard the gospel as we preach it today since it is AFTER THE HARPAZO! The only ones preaching the Kingdom of God at first are the 144,000 Jewish BROTHERS of Christ who will be persecuted, imprisoned, denied food, etc. for telling people about the coming King Jesus! Matthew 25:1-30 describes the fate of true and false believers who have either died or been taken alive in the harpazo. Verses 31-46 refers to those still here and become believers NOT by a profession of faith as we do today but by believing the message of the coming King AND acting upon that belief as proof. Jesus and Paul (We are saved by faith, not by works) do NOT contradict each other.
Why do ministers always leave out context. Tribulation period. Law is in full effect. Gospel of the kingdom being preached. Baptism, works, signs, tongues, healing all in effect. Body of Christ is raptured and there is no gospel of grace being preached in these times.
You are totally wrong in you’re message. This is clearly a post tribulation story of how the survivors will be judged. The age of Grace ends with the rapture of the church, so those who make it through the tribulation will be separated by their faith as evident by their actions. We are saved by grace through our faith, they can only be saved by faith through their actions. They missed the age of grace. While your message of doing good is applicable to the church, it is only a result of our faith (faith without works is dead). It’s not the works that save us, it’s just he expression of our faith.
I am deeply touched by the teaching of your lesson. Thank You 🙏🏽🙇🏻♀️
The same words revealed its truth to me half an hour ago while reading the same passage and i hit this sermon!! What a coincidence or Grace!!
This whole thing is what Jesus used to change me and save thank you Lord and for those who read this God Bless You 🥰

In my opinion the goats are the ones that will have to lead the sheep. Because all the Shepard’s these days are wolves.
That makes no sense the goats are the wolves rather than wolves in sheep's clothing there wolves in goat's clothing

Spoiler alert: Jesus's divinity was decided on by a well-documented vote by the Emperor Constantine.
