    Oh wow I like this a lot! I almost stopped watching when the slats were going in. I was like oh noooo not another slatted bed boooooo. Then I thought oh well wait and see what the 2nd component is and WOW - Very Nice! Subscribed especially so I could find this again, haha. I'll check back as well to see if you have cushions on there yet! Thanks for sharing your info!

    Looks like the finalised bed could do with an extra strip of timber on vert face of seat, to suport the ply bed part when in bed mod. So weight is no dependent on screws that hold to hinge. If ya know what I mean.

    • @metaspencer
      @metaspencer  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I ended up putting a long piano hinge on there -- so many more screws. But I see your point. It's always better to have load on wood ... thanks!

    Looks great! Wanting to do something similar in ours, but still have a ways to go. We did, however, buy the foam for our cushions yesterday. Friendly tip, get on a fabric/craft store's email for monthly coupons.

    • @metaspencer
      @metaspencer  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good idea on the coupons, especially since I have some time to source the foam. I'm thinking of modifying a futon mattress that I have, so we'll see how that goes. Take care

    I love it, I just have to make sure my old Astro van has enough roof clearance for it to swing over! I'm thinking I could also hinge the back to the seat so it could fold in to create more overhead clearance! It also has to straddle the wheel well when unfolded... Hmmmm.

    Nice design! Question- did you work up the measurements so that the cushions will be the right size for the mattress as well? Love this as I haven't seen this design on any other bus build- and I've looked at A LOT over the past year or two. (I'm converting a short bus as we speak!) Thanks for all your videos brother. I've watched most of them on this conversion process!

    • @metaspencer
      @metaspencer  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yep, based the size on a futon I’m planning to modify for the two cushions... I also measured a few other couches and chairs for rough specs. Good times on the bus!

  • @kevinconnaughton3299
    @kevinconnaughton3299 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I hate to be an internet troll but this is safety so ... At 3:56 you use the rip fence to make a cross cut. The longest side of you piece of wood should be against the devise you are using to guide it with. This cut would have been much safer with a miter gauge or crosscut sled.

    • @metaspencer
      @metaspencer  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good point! My sled was sitting there on the floor ... should have used it!

  • @briandavis9975
    @briandavis9975 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Nice work on the couch l like it very creative I used 5 125 pound slides that came out towards the center of the bus and held the weight of a person no problem but your idea is very cool.

  • @6ftS
    @6ftS 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    the center hinge will be holding the majority of weight when someone sleeps on it. one hinge. four screws. possibly 120 pounds average on there for at least 5 hours at a time. The hinge will not wear well. in steel maybe but I doubt ply will have a long lifespan. Perhaps a fold out support for the centre hinge? I dont know... some kind of enforcement? full length hinges perhaps?

    • @johnpossum556
      @johnpossum556 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think he's intending that space for his kid but regardless you could pick up replacement hinges in any hardware store in the USA while traveling.

    • @metaspencer
      @metaspencer  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good point ... I've done a bit of testing (rolling around on the folded-out bed; kind of embarrassing), and the weight on that 1/2 of the bed seems to be distributed onto both the legs and the hinges. I have a sense that the mattress will spread the force a bit, too. The fold-out support you mention is a great idea ... and a somewhat more substantial hinge in the center (piano for say 12") might be good, too. Thanks for giving me something to think about!

    Nothing like a decent random orbital sander . Like how you designed the couch all totally logical smart choices you made looks good man that bus gonna be amazing when finished ... If I become Philthy Rich anytime in the near future I may have to make you sell it 😎

  • @CraigDG

    With the fold out legs of the couch, can I ask why you went to so much effort making all those jigged angled legs when you could have just had a single piece of timber running the entire length of the foldout bit. i mean, you've hidden all those legs behind a panel of ply anyway. Sorry to sound picky, but with so much work to do, i would have used a more economical support mechanism for the leg of the couch that touches thr floor. cheers.

    • @metaspencer

      I was going for a certain style, as with other things on the bus, along with lightness and stability. You could do it a lot of ways for sure!
