Good question. The pouch is just for storing it when you are not carrying it. A lot of people collect the knives and if you don't have a display or storage case you can just store it in the pouch. It keeps it from getting all scuffed up in a drawer or tool box. If you are using it, you probably don't care if it gets scuffed up.
