I feel like the underthrown interception at the start of the second quarter came from how many TD's Nico has missed from overthrowing the receiver. Either that, or a bad release on the throw.
I said this as soon as I saw that ball start quacking in mid air. I said damn, he’s overthrown so many this year that he was afraid to let that one rip and it caused him to throw it legit 10 yards too short lol. That was a god awful throw. The rest of his day, minus that duck was the reason why he got the big bucks to come play ball for us, though. GBO!
Actually I think he waited too long to pull the trigger. If you'll notice, the ball travels 50 yards in the air. That's more than many QBs can manage with a Hail Mary. If he releases the ball just 3 steps earlier, Thornton doesn't have to come back to the ball. At worse, it's a 50/50 ball. Nico was just so comfortable here he lost track of time. 3 steps earlier and this ball hits Thornton in stride
@@johndunn8274and how about Thornton helping his qb out a little bit and play defender for one play. He just waited for the defender to catch the ball and then tackle him. In stead of at the very least knock the ball away. That was a bad throw yes but a horrible wr play as well. Your job as a wr is to go after the ball regardless!!!
Love coach Heupel. We are finally in good hands with him and it genuinely feels like we can relax and trust our coach for the first time in a loooooong time.
Finally complimentary football! Definitely would love to see part 2! Got a little glimpse of the future with the Nico to Mathews TD! Great analysis by the way!
Love it. Looking forward to Part 2. BTW that 2nd Nico->Thornton TD, no.10 who threw a block was Mike Matthews not Squirrel White. Squirrel wore no.10 last season and now wears no.3 this season. GBO!
I run this exact offense in high school and I will say the reason Nico had his best game was because Vanderbilt’s safeties played aggressive the entire game. The biggest plays were the post routes that went the distance and a lot more of the middle of the field completions. It’s their deep choice series, where it can be a go, comeback or post. Since the safeties were aggressive, they left the middle of the field open and middle of the field throws are easier to throw than the go ball, where Nico has been inconsistent all year. On the other hand, this offense doesn’t rely heavy on making adjustments, due to the fact that you can run multiple routes in one play. Gotta give credit to Nico though, he did come through.
@ It’s actually easier than people think. The first rule they must follow is read the middle of the field, open or closed? If it’s open, they run the post. If it’s closed, he runs a go route or a comeback based off of the corner back’s leverage. It’s like option running teams. The defense is always wrong. It’s about execution. I can’t count on my hand how many times Nico has over thrown or under thrown go balls, like he did here and it was a pick. Milton had the same issue. If you can get a quarterback like Hooker who could hit that consistently, man this offense is unstoppable.
Just want to point out that it wasn’t bad blocking by Squirrel White on the long Thornton TD. That was Mike Matthews (#10). He’s a true freshman with limited experience, so I’d cut him some alack for not playing that one perfectly.
Let’s go vols!!!! Rocky Mountain Tennessee!!! We ready!!! Never count us out!!!! We are a dangerous 2 half team!!! Y’all better not give us a home game!!! In playoffs!!! Team big orange 🍊!!!
I said that when the play was being replayed. His arm was down. I can’t believe they didn’t at least have a better/closer look at it. What am I saying? Of course they’re going to screw us at every turn and chance they get!!!! Bastards!!!!
@ you can’t be any more wrong about something. Not a single fumble that Sampson has had this year has been because of a bad hand off. Whole I don’t think that this one was a fumble, his arm was down, the others was solely his fault.
Great analysis. Two comments on one play. The second Thorton TD: #10 was not Squirrel White, but Mike Matthews (Squirrel changed his number to #3). Watch that play again and focus on Matthews. He was MORE open that Thorton. Total bust by the Vandy corner. Nico didn't see it.
That illegal hands miss by the refs was just one of many different penalties they chose not to call on vandy. The first half officiating was AWFUL. Especially when one of vandys DBs or LBs, not sure which, steps right on the line of scrimmage and Tennessee gets called for a false start. Another player rips off the helmet of a tennessee receiver, obviously on purpose, and that wasn't a facemask call but when UT played uga it was. And then the crazy bad roughing call. Officiating in the sec is so damn inconsistent.
great analysis. Props to Vandy on execution of the classic 'return left' wall. The kickoff team is where coaches put high dollar donor's kids....lol. When I was at FSU, Jack Nicholas (famous golfer) son played on the kickoff team. Just one of numerous examples. UT needs a better warm up program. Seems like if there was a 5th quarter to every game, UT would just kill it. Why do they waste the first 2 quarters of every game getting warm....
The worst call I seen was when a TN lineman was pulling the pile instead of pushing it. I've never seen that call but I always see an offensive person pulling!? I didn't like that roughing call but that's the new norm is to baby the QB down, swaddle him and kiss him on the forehead before all his weight is on the ground.
37 was not knocked down. I saw a different angle from the local news and the Vandy player grabbed his jersey at the shoulder pad and jerked him downwards. You can't see it on this video but you see the result where he is completely off balance.
Wasn’t the kickers fault. He can kick it through the end zone every time. The plan was to pin them inside the 20, which is why he didn’t kick it through the end zone. It was poor execution by the rest of the kickoff team
Sampson can't even get on the Doak Walker list much less 3rd in the Heisman but yet he's in the running for player of the year... he's had 9 100yd games, if this was anybody else in the league, the networks would cram that down your throat especially if was Alabama, Georgia, or even an LSU.... he's more deserving than the credit is given to him.
Norman Lotts family's travel got messed up and they didn't make it in time. He decided to go out there alone rather than have Coach G or anyone with him.
Dont know if your question was answered yet but ONL did have family at the senior day game and decided to stand by himself. Not a great home life reportedly.
Sampson was never going to be a finalist. He hasn’t been in the conversation all year long, and was never going to be. That fumble didn’t cost him New York, because New York was never on the table.
Sampson had that ball aggressively striped from him, he was protecting the ball. Is it still a fumble against him? Yes it’s a turnover but not carelessness on his part.
Very Poor coaching and player recognition on the Kick return TD. Did nobody see where the return was set up? Vandy had a wall to the left and the up players were set to block down to the right. VERY Disturbing... That kind of incompetence will get you beat most games.
@ could have been, I didn’t think so. DSamp elbow looked down to me, that should have at least been reviewed. We didn’t even get another camera angle, nothing. I don’t think it was a fumble. TN wins anyway but would have looked far better without that TD Proud of little bro Vandy, they’ve played damn good this year and maybe they let Pavia stay till he is 30. So Vandy has hope of winning season next year.
@ the one angle they showed was enough… sampson landed on a defender. only thing that could’ve hit the ground was the arm carrying the football and the one angle showed it was stripped well before it hit. Sampson needs to hold on to the ball. All there is to it. Ima vol fan too but ima be real.
@ well the media you’re seeing is wrong. and i highly doubt you are seeing ANY media on it, vol-biased or not. The call was the right call. Go find the full game on youtube and look for yourself.

Itll never change, officials always seem to get in the way of good football.
The SEC needs to hire full time officials, believe me they can afford it.

Love the way you break the plays down. It's very insightful.
With some receivers out Brazzell stepped up to the plate and did a heck of s performance this game!

Matthews was wide ass open on that play too
Good job. Didn’t know they had that few of kick returns
Turbyville usually puts everything out the back of the end zone.
You're the best on film study for THE TN Vols!! LET'S GOOOOOO Big Orange Playoff Bound Baby!!
#10 is Mike Matthews. Squirrel White switched to #3 this season. That block was probably just a freshman being a bit too eager.
Great video. You do a great job pointing out the good and the bad. Keep it real. 👍
Let’s get part 2. I love these!
Let's see part 2! Go Vols!
He'd been overthrowing the last few games so I get that underthrow. Just glad that he came back and played well. No more staring down his 1st read.

Part two please.

Total coverage bust at 10:40. Squirrel White was also wide open for the TD
Yea, I saw it too. I'm surprised he didn't comment on it.
mike matthews.
Norman Lott’s family was late getting there. They were there for the majority of the game and took pics after the game.
this was a good video really like you showing snippets of one schools plays offense and defense

plenty of bad flags in this game. Apparently you can only tackle Pavia if you get him exactly around the waist
