The thing is if you are against a good LawBringer who is expected to be defensive. GB will not be useful as an opener. Main reason is: if GB-counter is pretty good and parries. It´s going to be hard using this. You can say it applies to everyone who has very good GB-counter and parries. I usually meet them very often when I play Duel/elimination.
Good stuff as always. Always share your videos and people love them. Keep up the great work and continue bringing honor with your glorious folded steel.
I've done these mixups in the past but I just kept getting shitted on and now I hardly use mixups anymore but thanks to your video now I have gained my confidence back and I'll try to practice even more now.
two combos that I like that you didnt mention (i dont think you did). Are gb, side heavy, side heavy feint into gb. And gb, side heavy, top heavy dash feint into helm splitter. I also enjoy using the helm splitter into top heavy feint combs, such as helm splitter into top heavy dash feint into gb, as well as helm splitter into top heavy feint into helm splitter again (can then turn into another top heavy feint again to make it a continuous combo.) I must say though you are without a doubt the best kensei ive ever seen on any youtube videos you deserve more credit. If you play on PC please add me my ubi tag is FreehandElm I want to 1v1 with you and learn im a kensei main my kensei is rep 16.
A good thing to know that most of you may not now,is that if you parry a light attack, you get a free gb. And we all know all the combos we can do with a gb. Trying to parry light attacks is risky, but worth it,with kensei.
Great Video, I mostly did those mixups randomly haha :D Anyway, gotta ask some things: - Do you have any tips on getting better at parrying and countering those guardbreaks? I'm playing on ps4 and I feel like everythings running too fast to react to hit. I feel like people can cgb me even when they are already grabbed, but i cant seem to counter those fcking guardbreaks! Same for parrying, i'm seriously struggling at this :D any tips on getting better? - about that, any other opening options than the ones shown? I feel like i have to feint 2 times before people fall for light attacks and guard breaks :-/ I hope you can help me :-)
parries really is just a matter of experience (and reaction-timings), you´ll get it eventually. you can go into a custom-match vs. a lvl3 bot, disable damage and try to parry their attacks. unfortunelty there´s a huge disadvantage on consoles because of 30fps, input-lag, display-latency, etc. and pulling parries off is definetly a harder task on ps4 than on pc. regarding openers: you don´t have many options there. if your opponent is just turtling, you can try to crack him up by whiffing two light-attacks (while going backwards to reduce your foward momentum) into unblockable to force him into any action. or you can try to whiff-gb>gb them (you whiff a gb from safe distance > if you´re lucky, opponents muscle memory triggers his gb but you´re still out of range > he whiffs his gb and you can counter-gb). but this requires pretty tight spacing but is very hillarious if it connects :)
what do you mean? swift-strike? I´ve already mentioned it in the video that those are unsafe. Your opponent doesn´t even need to parry them. A simple block is enough and he gets a guaranteed guardbreak on you.
these mix-ups are great, but can you design a flow chart for which to use depending on the available options of your opponent as well as to counter certain patterns you observed. for example I like how you point out that top light after unlockable feint is great for parry fishers, but what if they're capable of feinting their parry. I know this may be too complicated.
for example with warden, when I land a light, I feint shoulder bash and notice what option my opponent chooses. if they dodge I'll cancel into grab next time, if they're using an assassin and sidestep attack I'll parry them, if they stay in place, I won't feint it the next time. this might not be the best way, it's just my personal flow chart.
nah man, sorry but there are waaaay to many IFs and HOWs. but to answer your quesion: if they feint the parry attempt the upcoming top-light will still hit them right during their feint-recovery frames. if a warden goes for crushing counter, it´ll end in a trade if i remember correctly. But i can´t provide any form of "if opponent do this, you do that"-flowchart. In the end you wanna deliver as much dmg as possible during your mixups so inserting 2x heavys (1x side and 1x side or top) is the best outcome. but if you go for a second-heavy after the feint, your opponent can feint his parry-attempt and block/parry your attack. shit is pretty situational and I don´t think much about it during fights. I just try to let it flow xD
BigHat Logan there are definitely too many things to consider. that being said, I think you're knowledgeable enough to recommend certain strategies for different situations. what's more important is matchup specific insight, like what you mentioned about the warden's crushing strike sequence.
BigHat Logan I think basically what I'm trying to say is that you're showing us all the awesome tools kensei has, but can you also show how they can be used for option coverage. As I said, you partially showed that, it's just that it wasn't your focus.
its´more about the playstyle than the matchup imho. As long as your opponent has a fast attack, he can interrupt every mixup out from your unblockable except side-heavy (hyperarmor), zone-attack (hyperarmor but veery hard to unlock and connect, what can ends in a very unlucky trade) or swift-strike (unsafe on block). Many players just "freeze" when they see the unblockable icon and don´t react fast enough and try to parry/dodge, but it´s actually really easy to interrupt it. As a warden, just throw out a Zone-attack as soon as you see the unblockable attack. Worst case, you both trade for 20dmg (in case the kensei goes for the hyperarmor-side heavy), but its more likely that you´ll interrupt him in whatever crazy mixup he has planned.
I have a question at 3:46 when you cancel your top heavy into your zone. I can't manage to successfully double hit with the zone attack. Each time i turn my char after the feint, the first hit connects and then my char goes too far away for the 2nd hit to reach my opponent. I tried to lock/unlock at different times but it's no use. How do you do to keep your char close to the opponent even though you turned your character just before the zone attack?
yea thats a tricky one. you have to be pretty close to your opponent and after the first hit connects, you have to relock your camera. but the timing is very strict
BigHat Logan Thanks for the answer, i discover a way to do it alsmot every time. After the feint i move backward, buffer my zone attack then put my left joystick forward et lock just before the first hit connects. If don't relock before the first hit, it won't connect.
The issue with Kensei (pending there hasn't been an update that I am unaware of since retail launch) is that you can react to *literally* everything they do. You hold top guard against them, and any of their side attacks are slow enough that you can respond. The only thing Kensei can do is Heavy Cancel for mixups. Which is not true of people like Warden. Between their fast Up + Light attack and their Light + Heavy mixup, you find yourself in 50/50s quite a bit. Kensei has no such tools, and these are not really mixups. Beyond that, you can react to *every* guard break 100% of the time at high level.
yes sir! if your opponent is playing reactive, there´s absolutely nothing you can do as kensei. your best bet is to force your opponent to any actions by whiffing 2x light-attacks followed with the unblockable-mixup. but experienced opponents will just slap you with their light attack during your unblockable-startup and negate 90% of your mixup-options.
Great video! Say, when do I go for *gb > gb > top heavy mixup* and when for *gb > light/heavy > top heavy mixup* ? Is the first hit - light or heavy - after 1x gb guranteed? And should I always dash gb after parry?
your basic followup after a gb is a side-heavy because it´s guaranteed dmg. there is no reason to ever use the throw (gb>gb) except your opponent is out of stamina or you can push him into a wall for a guranteed top-heavy (unblockable). all other mixups are situational. your regular gb after a parry is guaranteed against most classes/attacks. exceptions are certain attacks from lawbringer, nobushi, kensei, valk and shugoki. you can grab those with a dash-gb after a parry but the timing is extremly tight.
Im gettin tight yo, I used to do that top cancel into side heavy on the fly, but now Im pressin the shit n it doesn't happen -_- I've literally lost fights bc of this bullshit. what am I pressin wrong? I do the top heavy then I pres R2 again and move the analog stick right and NOTHING
Does it matter to what side should I turn char to do double-hit zone after unlock? Any advices to timing? Couldnt achieve double-hit at all T_T Playing on KB+mouse
also should put forward dash block guardbreak as opener in guide, that is pretty usefull against guys who spams feints. if they attack its free block into GB, if they feint - its still GB.
yea I´ve thought about adding those techs regarding block-frames on your dodges. but I play with controller (no claw-grip) and I can´t change guard-direction and dodge fast enough. But you´re absolutely right. If you´re able to abuse your dodge-guard frames, this is a valid and great way to connect a gb. not a real opener tho because you can´t perform it out from neutral game and you need to react to your opponent (same as with parries)
Kensei keep his block stance in mid-dodge which is interupt all combos (like conqueror block) so you can block dirrection of attack and dash in any dirrection, that can open some ways to attack: if you block enemy attack while forward dash - its free GB or light attack, if you block enemy attack while side dash - its can be free dash attack.
it´s really just a matter of practice. Imho only the dodge forward>gb softfeint (out from unblockable) is really useful and it shouldnt take you that long to get those muscle-memory down.
So I'm maining kensai now as I've moved on from my rep 8 Pk. my kensai is rep 4. So my questions are 1.) Is kensai under powered overall? 2.) Would you say he has a lot of mix up options? 3.) can he hang with top tier characters 4.) Does he hit hard enough
Ronald Hicks Ronald Hicks 1.) Yes he is underpowered because he has no good turtle breaking options (like conq or warlord have), and you are unlikely to win a fight against opponents that dont fall for parry every single time. 2.) His mixups are based off top unblockable, and its kinda hard to get it. 3.) No way, unless enemies are noobs, in tournaments and competetive 1v1 he has no chance. 4.) Yes he has nice damage, not as much as raider, but definately on berserker level
When they cancel the unblockabe, its actually a free GB for the opponent so careful for that.... AS an orochi user, i har a hard time fighting Kenesi who uses literally most of these ublockable combos, after rematching, and losing and losing on purpose to do some experiments for counter, i found a way to fight against a kensei... But still, its a bitch fighting against a kensei...
every followup from the unblockable is pretty risky and can get interrupted by a single light-attack from almost all classes (except side-heavy and zone-attack because of hyperarmor).
when u do top heavy unblockable instead of pressing E (PC) for "hard feint" or "hard cancel" you try to do a side heavy which "soft feints" the top heavy into a side heavy without pressing any cancel button
As a kensei main just wait for the to attack the dash to thd side hit them with a light then GB and heavy attack the rinse and repeat. If they can counter thd GB then just do this shit in the vid
the soft feint from unblockable to side heavy is actually useful against characters that try to dodge attack the unblockable. when i fight assassins it works most of the time until they figure it out
true but kensei has a hidden mechanic with his dash gb that allows free guardbreak when you block an attack. takes getting used to since its unique to kensei.
I like your videos a lot but this could be basically just a list. That list could be in the videodescription and I could just copy and print that list because I'm a lazy piece of shit. No move is useless, being unpredictable is key when fight high lvl players. doing a unblockable cancel into a top light repeatelty can just fuck most players up with you top light, it shouldnt be nerfed since top lights are kensei's only fast atks. unlike the other characters.
Dude hands down the best kensi mixup video I've seen. Your one hell of a technical player.

How do you soft feint into the dodge, or soft feint in general?
dash attack combos require full staimina, and if ur opponent parry ur attack at the end that can be end of the game.
