Our TRUE WORTH. The FULL POTENTIAL of our Humanity (On Icons and Flesh)

  • Our flesh and blood have the extraordinary potential to contain within themselves the Uncontainable Creator of all. Our flesh and blood can open our spiritual eyes to our own worth, our own mystery. Icons, iconography can reveal to us this potential, can show us our value, our 'worth' as human beings created in the Image of God.

This is the key to self realization and union with God.
For the good that I want, I do not do, but I practice the very evil that I do not want. But if I am doing the very thing I do not want, I am no longer the one doing it, but sin which dwells in me. I find then the principle that evil is present in me, the one who wants to do good. For I joyfully concur with the law of God in the inner man,
    Romans 7:19‭-‬22
"But if I do the evil that I don't want it is no longer I that do it." That is key. If we are born from above it is Christ that is born within us and is the inner man of the heart which is our true nature.
This insight comes after we spend some time fighting the desires of the flesh and it begins to dawn on us that what we fight against is not us that we are the inner man of the heart and are already one with God. When we know who we are in the depths of our heart we are no longer tempted because we no longer identify with the carnal nature. The lie only has power over us as long as we believe it but when we come to a knowledge of the truth of our own being the war is over because at that point we are in God and God is in us.
In that day you will know that I am in My Father, and you in Me, and I in you. He who has My commandments and keeps them is the one who loves Me; and he who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and will disclose Myself to him.”
    John 14:20‭-‬21
    Theosis

Thank you father. Because of very good friends that introduced me to Jesus I have found the good life in Him, not only by sunday mass and youth activities but because of you with your encouraging words. I was brought up as irreligious and just recently have become not just interested but fully invested in His teachings and His will and becoming more and more convinced of its righteousness.
It's a long path through deep and unpleasant snow, but I know when I come home it'll be warm and beautiful and I can sleep well knowing I took that path to Him. This is more than just metaphor but an actual event, I did ponder about God while walking through a snow-veiled path through the forest, it truly is beautiful and helpful. Bless your soul and may the monastery live on.

Thank you Fr Seraphim, as a Protestant (converting) getting my nous around the principle of an Icon has been an eluding truth. Well, after a few hours of contemplating the image (your perspective) you shared, it reached a level of tangibility where I was able to share it with my wife in an understandable way. For nearly 7 months (conver'sion/ting') I've been venerating icons with my understanding in deficit to the 'what'(& therefore who) I'm honouring venerating. I've been playing the hypocrite (ignorantly?) I'm pretty certain. St. Silouan the Athonite has been a critical inspiration, how do I love my enemy? To realise that we are all icons of the image of God some brighter some, not so bright but with the resurrection of the blessed incarnation, our precious Lord Jesus Christ, who smothered death with the brightness of His light; the potential of all God's icons to shine is ever there. We are matter(body) like the matter(wood) of the painted icon, we are earth & water of many colours still labouring for the lost by inspiration of the painted image on the wood. Our Lord was earth & water hung on a wooden backdrop, I see why you see flesh & blood. Fr Seraphim, I am so excited at the Lord's reproof through what you shared, I don't want to pretend to be a Christian anymore, why have mercy on this old dog? I've seen some dark days since bright Tuesday (conversion under attack) but this week has been a steady sunrise. Brothers like you are like the sun Ray split to a rainbow off a drop of morning dew, colour & the warmth of the love of Christ, the echo of life. God bless & thank you again.
Please pray for me, St Silouan please pray for me, St Mary of Egypt please pray for me, St Paul the Simple please pray for me, for faith, repentance, humility and that I miss not a single crumb that falls from the Master's table ☦ Amen.

Good point about how we are living chalices for the Holy Eucharist (bodily the earthly Christ) as well as the temple of the Holy Spirit. Again in our limits of human language, we are trying to describe and say things that are beyond our very words. In awe, we (the creation) cannot be separated from the Creator. I can go around and around in my human logic but will never explain the mysteries that is God. So I just pray and not even question. Thank you for your insights and how the Holy Spirit is expressing thru you aspects of these mysteries.

    Dear Father,
I am always moved by the depth of your thoughts. Thank you.
Although in other words it speaks of the same thing the II. Vatican Council as well: “The truth is that only in the mystery of the incarnate Word does the mystery of man take on light. For Adam, the first man, was a figure of Him Who was to come, namely Christ the Lord. Christ, the final Adam, by the revelation of the mystery of the Father and His love, fully reveals man to man himself and makes his supreme calling clear. … He Who is "the image of the invisible God" (Col. 1:15), is Himself the perfect man. To the sons of Adam He restores the divine likeness which had been disfigured from the first sin onward. Since human nature as He assumed it was not annulled, by that very fact it has been raised up to a divine dignity in our respect too. For by His incarnation the Son of God has united Himself in some fashion with every man. He worked with human hands, He thought with a human mind, acted by human choice and loved with a human heart. Born of the Virgin Mary, He has truly been made one of us, like us in all things except sin.”

What a refreshingly “different”, informative and helpful approach to icons - that they reveal not only mysteries of faith about God, but also truths about ourselves.
Your idea of us being human chalices containing Christ is a good and thought-provoking one.
Another thought-provoking idea that I thankfully note is that we will never solve the mystery of ourselves - who and what we are - in this life.

As far as I remember I was overhelmed by the buty of icons. Dear father, you exactly described what I expercienced during last 3 weeks. 2 days ago I finished painting my first icon - Christ Pantocrator. The time I spent working on it was so special. What struck me most - we didn't get a sketch but we had to design it on our own. We've learnt a lot about the proportions of human body and the the ways of drawing it. Suddenly in one moment I realized that I can draw myself or any other person using the same rules as I'm using when I draw a face and the rest of the body of Jesus. In that very moment I saw Him in different light. In our human nature we are similar. I can't even express it here, how I felt. And now I'm listening to you and you open my eyes..Thank you so much. Your videos are precious. Love from Poland! Be blessed +

It might be possible for your priest to bring you communion at home, it is a matter of asking. Most priests will be willing to, it will of course depend on what the bishop has said about it. It is worth being honest with your priest though about how you feel about receiving communion.

It seems God reveals His Humanity in His suffering on these icons. The Shroud of Turin and the icon of Guadalupe both show the infinite depth of human suffering. Our humanity can only be redeemed by the suffering humanity of God in Jesus Christ. If I start to think of our humanity being redeemed in any other way it doesn’t reflect the humanity I see in God.
