    Lila Tueller has guts to lay her life story out there like that for the whole world to see. I just watcher all four episodes transfixed by her courage and beauty. Raised in the faith in SLC attending Skyline High School and the UofU, I am stunned that the daughter of a General Authority has healed herself sufficiently to calmly tell us her heartbreaking story. God bless you Lila.

    I binged all 4 parts. So many feels. In case y'all reading comments to 3 yr old videos: This has been very cathartic for me. I honestly have had a lot of resentment in my soul for Hartman Rector Jr... because even on my mission in the mid 70's, I hated the blacks being blocked. I used Elder Rector Junior's teachings to teach others the "less valiant" myth, on my mission and subsequently as a Gospel Doctrine teacher.
    This story has helped me see a different side to him, and to the GA's and their families. I've finally come to peace with Elder HRJ. Thank you, Lila. Your story and mine have some similarities. I appreciate your vulnerability so much.

    Anyone who lives for the church pays a huge price in time and emotional trial. There are so many in the church who are depressed and anxious because they feel like all they can do is still not enough and or done well enough. The church seems to give the impression that they have the market cornered on goodness and service. Not so. Never was so. There is a lot of happiness and joy to experience and share without feeling guilty for not doing enough. Without being judged by anyone but the the Lord.

      I've said for a long time there is no positive reenforcement in 3 hours of church every sunday. It was just 3 hours of every thing you're not doing and everything you should be doing. EQ was an absolute beat down every sunday. Always came out feeling totally lost and frustrated. I'd spend 2 hours in traffic and 1 hour in EQ and feel more stressed after EQ than traffic.

    What a beautiful person Lila is!! Inside and out!! I can’t hardly believe she is as old as she says! I hung on every word for the four hours! Parts of her life sound like mine. I left the church 4 years ago and have not stepped foot in since. Yet, my husband has been ward clerk for 7 years! He says my parents and grandparents (all deceased) are ashamed of me and I’m following the devil and I’ll be sorry. It breaks my heart! Everything I try to tell him just infuriates him and he sends me mounds of church info. He says Joseph admits that he was not a perfect man. WHAT??? So that excuses everything???? And the kick in the arse is that I converted him 46 years ago before I would marry him! I learned so much from Lila. Please thank her for me. I know that I need to find others to talk to who have left but in this little town of 200 it’s kinda hard. I’m an apostate and they keep telling me they’ll sit with me if I’ll come back. No thanks. John, I’ve listened to so many of your interviews. I wish I could just sit with you and feel accepted for 5 minutes! But I’m 3 hours south of Salt Lake. Maybe some day. Until then I lean on you and your awesome guests. Thanks!

    How many takers did she have from guys??? She's so beautiful and articulate I bet she was bombarded! This is my story to a large extent. I was the daughter of a cultist preacher. Our small church borrowed heavily from the same writers that the Mormon church did. We were considered part of "mainstream" Christianity so it was easier to some extent but I knew as a small child we didn't have the corner on the market on truth and we weren't the only Christians, not by a long shot. I've been out for years and have actually studied my way into the Catholic Church, mainly just reading Church history. Please no judgement on that as I've done my homework and have determined what to me is truth. I am surrounded by Mormons living in rural Wyoming and am always interested in their stories.

      I agree that the church does lose a lot of bright people but this woman struck me as a typical air head gold digger who was once attractive. Listening to her interview, I wanted to like her but she did not sound that intelligent, she sounded like a 50 year old woman who still thinks she is 20. When she was describing who she is interested in dating she basically was implying she wants a man who is established in his career (read, money) and who is not an alpha male (read, she wants to wear the pants in the relationship) She is just looking for any random guy to finance HER lifestyle while she gives him nothing in return. Remember how in this interview she stopped having sex with her husband? She wanted zero expectations on her, but had plenty of expectations of her future man.

    What an epic account of a family. All came from a zealous father and husband who built his life upon his religion and church. He was crushingly domineering and abusive to his family in its name. As a result, his children paid the price. They had some heady experiences through the church but ultimately the children suffered through failed marriages, mental illness and ultimately separation from their father’s faith. I found this a profoundly sad story.

    Lila Tueller certainly glows as a beautiful person inside and out in this beautiful podcast.
    The honesty of her telling is riveting and so filled with uplifting moments and beauty, while grappling with life's imperfections.
    I'm of the same generation, and my parents were also tracked out and converted to the Church as a young couple. My parents also became utterly devout for the rest of their lives and brought a pure quality of love and commitment to their children due to their LDS practice that I'm pretty certain would not have been quite the same had they not chosen to live as members. Also, similarly, my parents were never remotely perfect; I'd dare to say from the story given that my parents were in certain respects much worse at parenting than Lila's. And that's kind of funny, isn't it, because Lila was at such cross-ends to explain why her parents were both terrific parents but also unfortunately lacking in some unpleasant ways that can be too easily pointed too. And while that's hard to explain I can certainly, from my own childhood, relate very well.
    But the outcome was seemingly different.. 5of5 of us children sealed in the Temple, with children and all still active and it's been a long and uneven road but all seemingly growing more happy by the year now that decades have passed. (for me not until the 2nd Temple marriage)
    But speaking of gut feelings, must say, there is something too dark here.
    I have read a good amount of LDS lit & history, favorable & not, and conclusions aren't I believe so easy.
    I noticed Rough Stone Rolling on the shelf behind Dehlin, and in ways I believe it's become a go-to book for "the facts" for those with dissenting feelings. But Bushman's own feelings have never been dissenting to my knowledge. So what does that tell you? He was my stake patriarch for many years. And I think if anything he held himself above the "embellishing" tendency in story telling with a total seriousness.
    After so many confirmations of faith from life's journey what is it to turn away from faith? But I get it, prayers are not always answered and sometimes it seems all pointless. If anything, I'd have to find evil faults among members to be completely unsurprising.. otherwise why Judas? It's sad, but it's just precisely predicted in the BoM.

    Interesting interview. But as a scientist, engineer, and published author, I would like to enlighten folks a bit on modern science in the Book of Abraham. The verses in Chapter 3 regarding Kolob and set time perfectly describe what’s called “time dilation” in the language of physics - specifically general relativity. Set time is called “proper time” in physics. Proper time (set time) varies with the strength of the gravitational field in which it is measured. Strong gravitational fields, such as exist in the vicinity of a “great star” (e.g., Kolob) warp space and slow the passing of time. I explain this in detail in my book “Faith and Physics,” in which I also identify Kolob. But only a prophet could have known these principles in Joseph’s day, 73 years before Einstein discovered general relativity.

      @@noelhausler2911 I understand completely! It's hard to be authentic when people judge you as being of the "saved" or "blind". When I tell people that I'm a Baha'i, they usually don't know which box to put me in, except they know that I'm not in their box. And when I tell them that I first learned of Baha'i in Salt Lake City, they're not sure what to make of it. I like to be honest with people and most people do respect honesty. And you never know what people really believe deep down. A lot of people have had doubts that they've pushed down and tried to forget. They know which words to say to please their family and friends, but they won't say what they really think.

Lets be honest its a tall order, The requirements were 50+... but not too old, energetic, Honest, Kind, Mature, Financially Secure, Has to Cry and be vulnerable, not macho, in touch with his emotions, has to be able to cry...No Alpha Males, preferably with Kids so he understands what parenthood is like and the dedications it takes. Not Mormon or Active Mormon..No mixed faith relationship. If so can we get them back on the podcast...It would be a great story..

    It's interesting that she says she couldn't go to Relief Society because she didn't feel like she fit, yet as a single women, she treated me the same way for years. Her husband helped to mentor my son and when I would pick him up she ignored me. She wouldn't even speak to me. She was in the "clique" of women in the ward that acted like they were too good for me. I left the ward in 2010. I am very sorry she has had a difficult time though.

    In Utah, the 20th century started with an abundance of women that were available as a result of the dissolution of polygamy. In the early part of the 21st century there is an abundance of available women that have left their husbands as a result of the dissolution of their faith in the Church. Very interesting interview and unique insights.

  • @bryanmillet5840
    @bryanmillet5840 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Polygamy is not of God
    Joseph Smith, Jr. and also Emma (Hale) Smith both denied polygamy until the day that they died. One such example is found in the Doctrine & Covenants in both the 1835 and the 1844 editions. That doctrine is found in sections 101:4 and 109:4 respectively. It says, "Inasmuch as this Church of Christ has been reproached with the crime of fornication, and polygamy: we declare that we believe that one man should have one wife; and one woman but one husband, except in case of death, when either is at liberty to marry again."
    Another example where God did not command that polygamy be practiced is found in the fact that God commanded His people with certain commandments concerning the kings in Israel. Those commandments are found in Deuteronomy chapter 17 verses 14-20 (especially verse 17). Here it is for your convenience:
    "14 When thou art come unto the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee, and shalt possess it, and shalt dwell therein, and shalt say, I will set a king over me, like as all the nations that are about me;
    15 Thou shalt in any wise set him king over thee, whom the Lord thy God shall choose; one from among thy brethren shalt thou set king over thee; thou mayest not set a stranger over thee, which is not thy brother.
    16 But he shall not multiply horses to himself, nor cause the people to return to Egypt, to the end that he should multiply horses; forasmuch as the Lord hath said unto you, Ye shall henceforth return no more that way.
    17 Neither shall he multiply wives to himself, that his heart turn not away; neither shall he greatly multiply to himself silver and gold.
    18 And it shall be, when he sitteth upon the throne of his kingdom, that he shall write him a copy of this law in a book out of that which is before the priests the Levites;
    19 And it shall be with him, and he shall read therein all the days of his life; that he may learn to fear the Lord his God, to keep all the words of this law and these statutes, to do them;
    20 That his heart be not lifted up above his brethren, and that he turn not aside from the commandment, to the right hand, or to the left; to the end that he may prolong his days in his kingdom, he, and his children, in the midst of Israel."
    In 1 Kings 11:3-6, was evidence that the kings didn't follow the commands of God as found above in Deuteronomy. It says,
    "3 And he had seven hundred wives, princesses, and three hundred concubines; and his wives turned away his heart.
    4 For it came to pass, when Solomon was old, his wives turned away his heart after other gods; and his heart was not perfect with the Lord his God, and it became as the heart of David his father.
    5 For Solomon went after Ashtoreth the goddess of the Zidonians, and after Milcom the abomination of the Ammonites.
    6 And Solomon did evil in the sight of the Lord, as David his father, and went not fully after the Lord."
    A second witness can be found in the Book of Mormon in Jacob chapter 1 verses 15-16, which says,
    "15 And now it came to pass that the people of Nephi, under the reign of the second king, began to grow hard in their hearts, and indulge themselves somewhat in wicked practices, such as like unto David of old, desiring many wives and concubines, and also Solomon, his son:
    16 Yea, and they also began to search much gold and silver, and began to be lifted up somewhat in pride;"
    This stands in the face of the LDS D&C 132 that says that David nor Solomon sinned against God by practicing polygamy (multiplying wives). Therefore, this revelation that was 'claimed' to be from Joseph Smith, Jr. is false doctrine.
    To access the 1835 and 1844 Doctrine and Covenants, here are the directions: 1. Go to www.josephsmithpapers.org/ and click on "The Papers" in the black banner at the top. 2. In the center column click on "published revelations (7)". 3. In the right column click on either "Doctrine and Covenants, 1835" or "Doctrine and Covenants, 1844". 4. Now click on the down arrow next to "Table of Contents" and scroll down to the bottom. 5. In the 1835 it is the 6th from the bottom, and in 1844 it is the 4th from the bottom. 6. Click on "Statement on Marriage" and scroll down to verse 4. (in the 1844, you need to go to the next page to the right).
    This article says what I have said, and much more: facebook.com/notes/manofgod1830org-defending-joseph-smith/thou-shalt-not-lie-he-that-lieth-and-will-not-repent-shall-be-cast-out/371441066656625/
    If anyone can refute this and prove with primary sources that Joseph Smith was actually a polygamist, I would love to hear from you.

      @@davidfrey5654 “During our evening conversations [in his youth], Joseph would occasionally give us some of the most amusing recitals that could be imagined. He would describe the ancient inhabitants of this continent, their dress, mode of traveling, and the animals upon which they rode; their cities, their buildings, with every particular; their mode of warfare; and also their religious worship. This he would do with as much ease, seemingly, as if he had spent his whole life among them.” - Lucy Mack Smith
      He definitely had the talent to do so. But the wheat and tares are being separated. The Church is being cleansed because of you, you're performing an important function in strengthening the Church. And upon my house shall it begin, and from my house shall it go forth saith the Lord. First among those among you, saith the Lord, who have professed to know my name and have not known me, and have blasphemed against me in the midst of my house...
