Usually an inner lining (heavy or light depending the temp.) with a light waterproof windproof shell., Since I am retired now does not need formal winter coat. Hence wear a skiing jacket (usually thinsulate) which can hold cold upto -35. For shoes wear a very thin socks usually a nylon one before putting the real socks. The vapour barrier protects your feet. When walking on ice try to put weight on the knees like skaters do. I spend a lot of time Muskoka where temperature goes down to -30 and roads are slippery.
