At first it was really exciting to watch youtube videos of other cities around the world but the most I watched the more I realized that there's very little difference between any two cities these days. As an American I am exceptionally underwhelmed because most of the companies around the planet are headquartered here, so it feels like I never left America which is not necessarily a good thing. Different cultures, different languages, different peoples are good things not bad things because they make the world more interesting. If I visited Italy, for example, I would be in search of a truly authentic Italian experience. I don't want to see a Starbucks ANYWHERE while I'm there.
You're right but idk what do you exacty expect. For example, you can see grafittis or monuments of historically important figures on some walls, name of the places can be local, you can have a sit and enjoy a good view near a river or a mountain, join a festival like Oktoberfest. Other than these, people work, eat, drink, talk, sleep, it doesn't matter whether it is American or Turkish or something else, an Irish bar is an Irish bar and a Starbucks is a Starbucks. You may try having local friends if you'll be there for a long time, that would be the best local experience I believe.

Kreuzberg has changed a lot since early 2010s, when gentrification really kicked in (especially in that area called "Kreuzkölln" around Reuter Platz).
