My good friend had a cottage there, closest one to the island (from the video's viewpoint, off to the right a ways) at the beginning of the video. Used to jump off that island into the channel, float downstream a bit, climb out & repeat. I understand the cross is gone now? I haven't been there in almost 30 years now... such a beautiful area, I miss it.
I also remember the stone cross at the entrance to the narrows. We grew up cottaging on the Moon River and always enjoyed the wilderness of the narrows. It's just as I remembered it. Thanks for the memory.
Does anyone know what happened to the cross that was on the island? Sounds like it's gone now. Does anyone recall what happened to it, or why it was erected in the first place. I seem to recall it being a memorial for people who drown before the chutes were opened up/blasted...but that could be wrong. I've also found a 1917 article noting 2 young First Nations boys drowning by Bala Falls, but that's the wrong location. Anyone recall the story of the cross by the chutes?
I have a cottage on moon river and it's amazing. The chutes, or as I call it, the narrows, is a great place for cliff jumping but is also very dangerous too. The current is strong and its a very shallow area with protruding rocks. The fishing is great though! I've seen some big fish there and have caught some myself. Love the chutes but you must be careful at all times!! Follow signs and wear your life jacket when entering!
@@MyCoxAfloping it all depends on how much they open up the damn upstream. It varies. This past summer the water levels were very low.. So the water was warmer and drove the fish to the deep and made it harder to catch anything.
Odd - I grew up going to Moon River every year, and I can't place this area. Where exactly on the river is it? As a foreigner I guess we didn't necessarily know all the names of the areas.. Here is my video I made of me and my son's trip in Aug 2019. th-cam.com/video/SMQg8NGvB68/w-d-xo.html
There used to be a stone cross on the island, on the right, at the start of the video. It was there when I went to camp hilltop at the head of gaunt bay. We would canoe to the chutes to camp overnight off and on. Thanks for posting this memory.
My great aunt and uncle owned camp Hilltop forever. You would have known Art and Jan that ran the camp for kids!!! The family being us and other aunts and uncles had our cottages in the same bay. Art and Jan had their cottage high on the hill across from the mouth of the entry to the chutes. Haven't been on top of the ridge to remember if the cross is still there but the story of the Indian boy that drowned from his crossing still lurks!!! Read more REPLY
Sandy is now with her Mom and Dad on the Moon River forever.......!

Same here. Seems like the currents have been stronger the last 2 years as well
