- Grandma Moses art is a quintessential slice of Americana. Anna Mary Robertson Moses [Sept 7, 1860 - Dec 13, 1961] is renowned in America for being its foremost portrayer of Folk Art. She was born in 1860 - on a farm in Greenwich, New York, and was one of ten children. She had a happy childhood, but was somewhat impoverished. Anna grew up loving arts, crafts, and also became proficient in tapestry as well as quilting. At the age of 27, she married one of the hired hands and had a family of 10 herself. However, 5 of the children died young. When Grandma Moses developed arthritis, a friend suggested that she try painting instead of stitching. The rest, is HISTORY....She had here first art exhibition when she was in her late 70's .For, she is living proof that the human spirit can triumph at any age...
.
Grandma Moses paintings have been reproduced as Christmas Cards, tiles, and fabrics throughout America and abroad.....President Harry S. Truman presented her with the Woman's National Press Club trophy Award for outstanding accomplishment in Art in 1949. On her 100th birthday, New York Governor, Nelson Rockefeller, proclaimed the day as "Grandma Moses Day" in her honor.

Thank you, Salam. It was truly a joy. Bless you.
Nice tribute video. Thanks for the post. I enjoyed her sharing her family photos, describing "the styles of fashion & hair" in the day.
As a biology illustrator by profession, her cluttered wall & work space looks as mine! LOL.
First of all I apologize for answering late, I just noticed your comment. Glad you like it Soozi. I loved your honesty about your cluttered wall... You have something in common with Grandma Moses :-) Thank you for stopping by!
We have a painting of hers I found out its name is Joy Ride. I see it and it reminds me of Christmas. My family has lived near her by pure accident over the years, In New York and the Shenandoah Valley. We had seemed to share a lot in common.
she lived in eagle bridge!! like a 10 min drive from my house!!
Wow, what a nice thing to have had Grandma Moses as a neighbor
! Thanks for your comment & God bless***
She didn't have a "standard" painting, many different subjects, perspectives, etc. Her horses were wonderful. I wonder how much these paintings are selling for now!
+Aunt Barbara Her paintings were mainly based on a small town's houses, barns, churches etc...& on the regular making of soap, candles, maple syrup & holidays. She actually portrayed how the people lived & their towns in all aspects of a rural life. I have no idea of the price of her originals, but there are now prints available. thanks for your interest. & God bless! salam

I read that her painting "Sugaring Off" which was featured in this film, sold for 1.2 million.
portrait of the artist as a white-haired girl
grandma moses charmed wherever she went
a tiny, lively woman with mischievous gray eyes
and a quick wit, she could be sharp-tongued
with a sycophant and stern with an errant grand child
at age 88, mademoiselle magazine named her
a young woman of the year
known by her nickname grandma moses,
anna mary was a renowned american folk artist
she began painting in earnest at the age of 78
no big studio - simply on a crappy kitchen table
in the bedroom of her eldest daughter's barn
the new york times said of her: the simple realism,
nostalgic atmosphere and luminous color
with which grandma moses portrayed simple farm life
and rural countryside won her a wide following
mo was able to capture the excitement
of icy winter's first snow, thanksgiving preparations
and the lush young green of oncoming spring
grandma initially charged $3 to $5 for a painting,
depending upon its size, and as her fame increased
her works were sold for $4 to $6,
it wasn't about the money
her winter paintings are reminiscent
of some of the winter paintings of Pieter Bruegel the Elder,
although she had never heard of him,
or seen his work - what was grandma moses
supposed to know about the history of art?
there emanates from her paintings a light-hearted optimism
the world she shows us is beautiful and it is good
you feel at home in all these pictures, and you know
their meaning, afghanistan critics say
the unrest and the neurotic insecurity of the present day
extreme weather aggrandized by climate change denial,
nagasaki treat of nuclear war, sociopaths in white houses
make us inclined to enjoy the simple and affirmative outlook
of little grandma moses, white-haired painter of evergreens
You have taken the trouble to research all these information about Grandma Moses & you have kindly shared it with us. Beautifully said, Thank you & God bless!

dear salam / as promised / here's sonia's divine g'ma moses poem / god bless ya:
Placid Is A Place I Want To Be
placid is a place I want to be,
a Grandma Moses painting
set in the bucolic scene of
a red barn crowned with a
rooster weather vane as
children carry water buckets
from the nearby wishing well
which is visited by a resident
robin searching for tasty
earth worms surrounding
the wet ground as cows and horses
in the verdant meadow graze
peacefully together
